Men's National Championship kicks off this weekend, with games in Utah, California, Georgia and Florida. RLU conference kicks off from June 15.

Not to be a pain @yakstorm but is there a similar list for this weekends games? I am drip feeding an acquaintance that lives in LA… hoping he’ll take an interest in the local PCRL games. He watched a bit of the NRL LV telecast. He was born San Diego but living a long time in LA so he might pick a team.

I'm encouraged to believe it simply because it has quotes from the likes of Politis, Kelly & V'Landy. Whilst there is no doubt a healthy level of spin in any announcement like this, it is still a huge investment by the Roosters.

Full story:

The Sydney Roosters are on a groundbreaking $500,000 mission to break into the United States market with their own team based out of Los Angeles from next year.

Billionaire Roosters chairman Nick Politis is leading the charge on the back of interest created from the Las Vegas double-header in March in a revolutionary initiative he hopes will provide the first proper pathway for gridiron players into the NRL.

Under the plan a Roosters West Coast Rugby League Academy will be established alongside a team to be known as the LA Roosters to compete in a six-team competition in California.

“This is one of the most exciting ventures our club has ever undertaken,” Politis said.

“We see this as an exciting long-term opportunity not just to grow and develop rugby league in America but to provide openings for tens of thousands of great athletes that don’t always make it in the NFL or college football.

“It is a serious investment into an area where no NRL club has ever been.

“Who knows what can be achieved in the long term. There is so much potential.

“We are incredibly optimistic as to the opportunities that exist to unearth future rugby league talent.”

Politis is rugby league’s greatest visionary, the first man in Australian sport way back in 1976 to become a jersey sponsor with his car company City Ford.

He now insists this latest venture into the world’s biggest sporting market will pay off.

The Roosters were blown away by the Las Vegas experience earlier this year and the vision of independent commission chairman Peter V’landys to create a permanent footprint in America.

The LA Roosters will be made up of part-time players in the Pacific Coast Rugby League competition.

Roosters CEO Joe Kelly says the long-term plan is to attract players from the college football system.

“There are one million college football players,” Kelly said, “Of those, 10,000 participate in the combine each year, 300 go to the draft and approximately 285 get drafted.

“This leaves thousands and thousands of extremely talented athletes that are looking for an alternative once they finish college.

“We will become a very attractive second option. And we will be on the ground looking for them.”

Kelly has been working alongside Politis on the plan for several months.

Their $500,000 comes from the Roosters Foundation, the club’s fundraising arm that is dedicated towards young player development in junior academies and pathways.

V’landys loves what the Roosters are trying to achieve.

The Roosters will be the back-of-shorts partner for both the men and women USA National Hawks teams and will also be the referees sponsor for the USARL domestic competition.

Another $50,000 will go into a development fund for other American clubs to support the growth of rugby league awareness and participation in their region.

“Our investment will hopefully accelerate growth and provide the governing body and the players with much needed financial support to create further awareness and interest in the game,” Kelly said.

“In turn we are confident participation numbers will grow in the US domestic market.

“This whole thing isn’t just about finding NRL players.”

The Roosters also see an opportunity to entice rugby union players across to league.

“There are conservatively 1.2 million rugby players in the US. They play in winter, league plays in summer so their seasons don’t cross over,” Kelly said.

“There is a great opportunity to work alongside rugby and see a transition of players to league in their off-season.”

I thought they might have been buying the LA franchise in the Pro league.

But this sounds good also.

Probably the most in-depth article on the topic Ive seen. Some really interesting and positive benefits to the local leagues in the US...not just for Sydney Roosters gain. Even the sponsoring of match officials will hopefully help us get to the point of having consistent refereeing, great news.

Fantastic!

So much potential’: Roosters eye fringe NFL players in historic new USA partnership

Rugby league’s American expansion has continued, with the Sydney Roosters announcing a three-year strategic partnership with USA Rugby League (USARL).
Fresh from opening their 2024 season with a victory over the Brisbane Broncos in Las Vegas, the Roosters immersion in the US market is set to continue in the coming years.
The club are targeting the signatures of America’s supreme athlete market, particularly those who fail to reach the professional sporting world in other sports, especially American football.

As part of the partnership, which sees the Bondi club act as USARL’s game development partner for the next three years, the club will:

– Establish the Roosters West Coast Rugby League Academy
– Sponsor the USA Men’s and Women’s national teams
– Be the major sponsor of the USA National Elite Youth Team
– Sponsor referees for the USARL domestic competition
– Have their logo on every ball used in training and matches in the USA’s domestic competitions
Additionally, coaching staff from the Roosters will attend West Coast Rugby League Academy camps hosted several times a year, providing support and assistance to local Academy staff.

Roosters CEO Joe Kelly said the club are “extremely excited to partner with USA Rugby League.
“This landmark agreement presents a unique opportunity to expand the reach of rugby league and share our expertise in game development with a passionate and growing rugby community in the United States.
A core aspect of the partnership is the potential for the Roosters to lure US athletes who fail to make college and professional sporting programs in popular American sports, such as American football, into the NRL.
USARL Chair Matt Goschnick explained as much, stating: “This collaboration will create unprecedented opportunities for both male and female athletes, establishing a clear pathway for those involved in or aspiring to join the sport.
“In the US, only 6.8% of male athletes and 9.5% of female athletes transition from high school to NCAA college programs. Moreover, just 3.06% of men and 0.8% of women reach professional sports,” he said.

“This partnership with the Roosters offers these athletes a chance to pursue their dreams of becoming professional athletes through our programs.
“Our goal is to see players from this program secure NRL contracts in the coming years.”
Already, the Roosters have signed a pair of American stars, including the first North American NRLW player, Liz Tafuna. In addition to Tafuna, Michael Woolridge, winner of the NRL’s first combine in Las Vegas earlier this season, has signed a training contract with the Bondi outfit.
Woolridge’s deal, which is a full-time deal that sits outside the salary cap, runs until the end of 2024 and allows the former College defensive back to train with the club, and potentially impress them enough to make an NRL debut in the near future.

Woolridge’s contract exemplifies what the Roosters could gain from their USARL partnership, with Kelly admitting the club envisions reaping rewards from the deal, though not for some time.

“The numbers are staggering, there are one million college football players. This leaves thousands and thousands of extremely talented athletes that are looking for an alternative once they finish college,” he said.
“We are taking a long-term view, but we are confident that we will see US athletes make their way to Australia eventually and play in the NRL and NRLW with the Sydney Roosters.”
Alongside their partnership with the USARL, the Sydney Roosters will enter a team – named the LA Roosters – into California’s six-team Pacific Coast Rugby League Competition.
Roosters chairman Nick Politis confirmed the team has been formed with one eye on attracting some of America’s fine athletic talent across the Pacific and into the Bondi club’s systems.
“We see this as an exciting long-term opportunity not just to grow and develop rugby league in America but to provide openings for tens of thousands of great athletes that don’t always make it in the NFL of college football,” Politis said.
“It is a serious investment into an area where no NRL club has ever been.

“Who knows what can be achieved in the long term. There is so much potential.”

Roosters deserve a lot of credit for how much they are investing here. Generally when NRL & SL clubs ever partner with a developing nation, its usually token gestures like old jerseys or the promise of pathways (but zero guarantees)

Even if the Academy doesn't find any players and the LA Roosters become the Bandidos again, the promised sponsorship of 3 national teams + referees, provision of hundreds of Steedens & the club development fund will allow the domestic game to grow far quicker over the next 3 years then it would have otherwise & is more beneficial to the USARL than the Roosters.

It's a shame the Roosters don't even seem to be in the mix to return to Vegas next year. Would have been great to have the top squad & coaches back in LA and at both the new club & academy.
