Well the game is at Etihad so every Storm fan in Melbourne can all attend and get premium seating, no need for a telecast before midnight which will be perfect for them all to watch and relive the nightmare :)

With no AFL this Sunday, you'd think Ch 9 Melbourne may show the Eels v Dragons game live into Melbourne. You know..pretty much like we have to put up with Fremantle v Richmond games on FTA in Sydney. But no. They are showing a 100 year old movie instead.

When is the NRL going to show some balls and ensure the game is being showcased outside it's heartlands.

FFS.. there is no AFL this Sunday. A sporting void in Melbourne if you like.

what's the f**king point of News Ltd reporting it if News Ltd aren't going to do anything about it. THEY'RE THE ONES IN CHARGE!

What is most annoying is that:

1. NRL in Melbourne rates better than AFL in QLD and NSW when shown and yet they have no problem getting their product on tv multiple times a week and even live. Even 2 interstate teams will get shown.

2. NRL games will outrate the trash that is getting shown no 2 ways about it. Most of the time it is just some garbage movie that performs poorly anyway.

3. 9 have already paid for the product. Why not use it instead of paying more to show something else?

How the hell can we grow the game in Melbourne with no tv coverage?

People like to insult the storm because they haven't brought through any juniors but any growth that has happened in Melbourne is because of the storm. 9 and the NRL have done f*ck all to help.

A Nine spokesperson yesterday confirmed the Storm's late night scheduling was due to the AFL finals match between the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions running from 8.30pm to midnight on Channel 7.
Saturday night's match between Gold Coast and Brisbane will also screen from midnight so as not to conflict with Collingwood versus Adelaide Crows.

Pretty much what I said elsewhere. Channel 9 does not want to put NRL up against the AFL on a rival station. Why is that? It would obviously rate better than a 1953 movie, so it must be that Ch 9 does not want to upset Ch 7, or AFL, or both.

mmm.... I wonder if the next bid for the AFL will include a joint bid from Ch 7 and Ch 9 ? Reeks of collusion & obviously a breach of contract but yet our lawyer CEO does nothing. Why?

Why is the Telegraph not making more of this? Why are there no claims of "willingly turning away hundreds of thousands of supporters"

But there's no AFL on Sunday yet they are still showing an old movie instead of the RL. Pathetic.

Well, the game is being shown on PayTV - which is part-owned by PBL and News Limited. David Gallop works, effectively, for News Limited - so, he's done his job.

You're exactly right there but that's what happens when we have a spineless gimp running our game. The reason why the AFL gets shown in QLD and NSW is because Demitriou firmly stipulated in the TV rights negotaitions that whoever won them HAD to show the game in the northern states regardless of the teams playing or what ratings it drew. If the stations didn't want to come to the party in that regard then he'd have given the rights to a station/s that would.

What did our fearless leader demand? All he did was stipulate that Channel 9 had to show a replay of that days/nights game by midnight which we all know he never enforced anyway. Demitriou might be an arrogant merkin but he knows how to get his game to the largest possible potential audience throughout the country. We can only hope that Gallop has learnt some very valuable lessons in regards to how best negotiate the tv rights when they're next up but i won't be holding my breath.

Some questions for the people who are knocking Gallop and Channel 9

Why would the vast majority of people in Melbourne get behind a team?

Who pays for their team?

Who benefits from Channel 9 showing games in the middle of the night?

Currently the only reason the Melbourne Storm exist is because Foxtel (News Limited) bankroll them. They are the single biggest contributor to our game growing in Victoria. Without their support the game would lose the Storm and that would kill any chance league has of gaining a foothold long term in Victoria.

Wayne Bennett spoke last week of the AFL attempting to kill the NRL by having long term objectives, a 20 year plan in place. The Melbourne Storm, which is financed by News is the only long term goal the NRL has come up with in the past decade outside of our current NSW/QLD heartlands.

So my question is, why should News, who is at the forefront of making the only inroads into AFL territory give up it's one single commercial advantage it has in the sport?

Why are we so desperate for the game to get onto free to air. Are Channel 9 going to bankroll the Melbourne Storm?

I'm sure Mr Gallop has been told in no uncertain terms by News to shut his mouth re Free to Air coverage in Victoria and the other non core States as there isnt sufficient public outcry to get games televised on FTA and Foxtel is wanting a return on their investment.

Yes it's not fair on the fans of the game in Victoria that they cant see the game for free - and I really do feel for them. But the reality is, News is paying for our game in Victoria and they arent going to threaten their income stream just to be nice.

We just want Melbourne to be shown at a decent hour in Melbourne. The team may be bankrolled by News but the team should be ultimately for the viewing public in Melbourne, it couldn't rate a lot worse than the Swans do in Sydney.

Yes, that's what I want as well as it will give the game itself a real shot in the arm but lets face it ratings or fans desires have got little to do with it.

It comes down to who pays for your team.

Free to air television companies pay a f**k load of money for the right to show AFL games and they will broadcast them whenever they will get the highest ratings. Nine and Foxtel pay for Rugby League and they cut the cake the way that suits THEM the best.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if News Limited owned the Sydney Swans, then AFL fans in Sydney would be complaining that Swans games are only shown on Ten at 3am.

Yes it sucks, no it's not morally right - but until Nine are swamped with tens of thousands of complaints from Kentucky Fried Chicken buying bogans in Melbourne, absolutely nothing is going to change. They only bow to those that pay their bills.

Channel Nine in Melbourne: (03) 9420 3111

Well, I gave them a call and got some arrogant merkin who wasn't interested in the slightest. Simply said the NRL doesn't rate, never has, never will and the reason they are showing a 1953 movie instead is because it (the movie) will rate more than the NRL.

I suggest others give him a call, at the very least you will give him the sh*ts.

When you call Nein, do they give an estimate of ratings they expect for their 1953 movie? Would it be more then the approx. 30,000 they get for a late FN game? Do you quote these figures back to them when they say it doesn't rate?
