St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor has named his mandatory 21-man squad to face the Penrith Panthers at Panthers Stadium on Saturday, May 26 at 7:30pm.

The Dragons have maintained the same 17 that overcame the Canberra Raiders on Sunday afternoon at Mudgee's Glen Willow Stadium.

The only change to the squad overall is Luciano Leilua's inclusion in place of Mitch Allgood.

Dragons front-rower Jeremy Latimore will bring up his 150th NRL game against his former Panthers side; a team he will have played exactly half of his NRL career for come Saturday night (75 appearances).

Veteran winger Jason Nightingale will also rack up another accolade against the Panthers as he racks up the third-most appearances by a Dragon, Steeler or St George Illawarra player ever.

Nightingale's 257th first grade game will see him overtake Dragons legend Norm Provan on the combined appearances list.

No surprises really.

Annoying that ISP is playing in Newcastle, it means potentially both Robson and Lomax May stay in Sydney while the ISP team travels, therefore ruling them out of another match.

Surely he makes sure Lomax gets a game and if he needs to carry a 19th player let it be Robson or even LL

So Lawrie named at 17 again, but if he doesn't play again this week it's likely he'll go at least three weeks between games. Not sure how that helps a young prop's development.

If one was that way inclined ............ we could discuss this further on the 'Sack McGregor' thread!

Also, point of interest- Of their past four meetings with the Panthers, the Dragons have won all four.
Go you Saints!!!!!!!!!!!

MATCH PREVIEW

Panthers v Dragons: Hosts unchanged; Latimore's 150th

Not that they are underrated, but the Panthers are emerging as the NRL's quiet achievers in 2018 under coach Anthony Griffin.

Guiding his team to eight wins from their first 11 games has Griffin right alongside Paul McGregor, Ivan Cleary and Stephen Kearney as the early frontrunners for Coach of the Year. He had to deal with the injury-enforced absence of his best player in addition to the loss of other key players at different stages through injury.

The steady influence of seasoned campaigner James Maloney can't be measured, while others like Tyrone Peachey, Trent Merrin and Reagan Campbell-Gillard have also stepped up. This weekend the Panthers face arguably their toughest test of the season.

After losing to the Rabbitohs in round 10, the Dragons bounced back with last week's narrow win over the Raiders to remain alone in first place with a 9-2 record.

This Saturday night top of the table battle at Panthers Stadium could go all the down to the wire.

Match: Panthers vs Dragons

Key match-up: Based on the theory that the forwards will probably cancel each other out, it's highly likely the outcome of this 1 v 2 showdown will be determined by the opposing halves. There's every chance halfbacks Nathan Cleary and Ben Hunt will line up against each other in the Origin series, while James Maloney and Gareth Widdop will also get plenty of touches. This game is shaping as one of the most anticipated clashes of the season and the halves battle will be critical.

For the Panthers to win: After getting away to slow starts almost every week, the Panthers were on their game from the get-go in last week's home win over the Tigers. If they get away to a flyer again on Saturday it will put the onus on the Dragons to keep their cool in a hostile environment.

For the Dragons to win: A less than convincing win over Canberra but a win all the same. They aren't playing the Raiders this week and the Dragons will have to improve on last week's performance against an in-form Panthers. They need to stay alert defensively after being caught napping by the Raiders' quick taps.

Panthers stat attack: The Panthers have won 11 of their past 12 games at Panthers Stadium, while key off-season recruit James Maloney has never lost in 11 games at Panthers Stadium.

Dragons stat attack: Of their past four meetings with the Panthers, the Dragons have won all four. Journeyman forward Jeremy Latimore will play his 150th NRL game on Saturday.

And another thing: Such is the interest in this top of the table stoush that tickets had apparently all sold out by Tuesday morning. That's great news for the Panthers and it should also ensure plenty of armchair fans are glued to the telly on Saturday night. We're only in May but the Panthers want top spot and the Dragons won't want to give it up.

Penrith Panthers v St George Illawarra Dragons, 7.35pm Saturday at Panthers Stadium

Panthers: 1 Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, 2 Christian Crichton, 3 Tyrone Peachey, 4 Dean Whare, 5 Tyrone Phillips, 6 James Maloney (c), 7 Nathan Cleary, 8 Trent Merrin, 9 Sione Katoa, 10 Reagan Campbell-Gillard, 11 Corey Harawira-Naera, 12 Isaah Yeo, 13 James Fisher-Harris

Interchange: 14 Wayde Egan, 15 Jack Hetherington, 16 Viliame Kikau, 17 James Tamou

Reserves: 18 Jarome Luai, 19 Kaide Ellis, 20 Tyrone May, 21 Thomas Eisenhuth

Penrith are unchanged, with hooker Peter Wallace still unavailable.

Dragons: 1 Matt Dufty, 2 Nene Macdonald, 3 Euan Aitken, 4 Tim Lafai, 5 Jason Nightingale, 6 Gareth Widdop (c), 7 Ben Hunt, 8 James Graham, 9 Cameron McInnes, 10 Paul Vaughan, 11 Tyson Frizell, 12 Tariq Sims, 13 Jack De Belin

Interchange: 14 Jeremy Latimore, 15 Kurt Mann, 16 Leeson Ah Mau, 17 Blake Lawrie

Reserves: 18 Reece Robson, 19 Zac Lomax, 20 Luciano Leilua, 21 Hame Sele

The Dragons are unchanged from last week's win over Canberra.

Head-to-head: Played 32; Dragons 20 wins, Panthers 12 wins
Matches at venue: Played 15; Panthers 8 wins, Dragons 7 wins
2017 results: Dragons won 42-10 at Jubilee Oval in round 1; Dragons won 16-14 at Panthers Stadium in round 25
Points per game: Panthers 22.6; Dragons 27.2
Points conceded per game: Panthers 15.1; Dragons 14.9
Televised: Live on Fox League

Steve Turner's prediction: The game of the round! Penrith are a genuine title contender and the Dragons returned to the winner's circle with a tough win against the Raiders. Nathan Cleary adds so much class to the Panthers, their forward pack is impressive and Tyrone Peachey adds the x-factor.

Meanwhile, the Dragons forward pack is a big reason why they sit on top of the ladder. Throw in classy halves and a brilliant number one, it's hard to split these two sides. The best defensive teams going to head to head on the eve of State of Origin selection.

Tip: Panthers by 4

Top of the table clash to also double as Origin audition
Roar Guru
By mastermind5991, 22 May 2018 mastermind5991 is a Roar Guru

This Saturday night, the NRL’s top two teams, the St George Illawarra Dragons and Penrith Panthers, will go head-to-head.

It not only looms as a potential finals preview, but also the final chance for several players to stake their claim for Origin team selection ahead of Game I at the MCG on June 6.

Next week, NSW coach Brad Fittler and his Queensland counterpart Kevin Walters will name their sides for the opener at the MCG, after which is followed by Game II at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on June 24 and Game III at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on July 11.

After eleven series losses in the past twelve years, Fittler has already shown how serious he is in restoring pride to the Blues jumper, with plans to name the youngest and a vastly inexperienced side in the state’s recent history.

Among those he is expected to select include Jack de Belin, Tyson Frizell, Paul Vaughan and Euan Aitken, who have played their roles for the Dragons, and Nathan Cleary, who despite having just returned from injury has shown he is ready for the pressure cooker that is State of Origin.

Walters, meanwhile, will be forced into finding a new captain for the Maroons following the shock rep retirement of Cameron Smith last week, while he must also find just the state’s third different hooker since Game III of the 2003 series.

What is certain is that he will name Ben Hunt in the number seven guernsey, with the 28-year-old already proving to be a revelation for the Red V after signing a six-year, $6 million contract with the club in January last year.

But first, this Saturday night, all the focus will be on the top of the table showdown between the Dragons and Panthers, two sides that have impressed not only their fans, but also the NRL, in 2018.

There were elevated expectations for the Dragons this season after they secured the prized signatures of James Graham and Hunt during the off-season.

So far the club have lived up to them, finishing every single round on top of the ladder after thrashing the Brisbane Broncos by 34-12 at Kogarah Oval in Round 1, the win masterminded by Hunt whose intercept try in the second half completely turned the momentum his new side’s way.

They proceeded to win their next five games, marking the best start to a season by the Red V since the merged entity came into effect in 1999. They have also notched up impressive wins over the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne Storm, two sides expected to feature in September this year.

The 299 points they have scored after eleven rounds is the most of any side, 31 points more than the next-best attacking side, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, to whom they lost in Round 10.

Their only other loss so far came against another very good side in the form of the New Zealand Warriors in Round 7.

Coach Paul McGregor put the loss to the Rabbitohs down to a poor first half, while Hunt appeared to struggle with an injury during that match, while the loss to the Warriors came across the ditch against a side that had previously struggled to win without star halfback Shaun Johnson.

Last Sunday, the Dragons reclaimed the premiership lead after defeating the Canberra Raiders by 25-18 in Mudgee, the win highlighted by a 50-metre try to fullback Matt Dufty in the final ten minutes.

Having passed tough tests against the likes of the Broncos, Roosters and Storm in the opening nine rounds, this Saturday night they are presented with another tough test when they travel to the foot of the mountains to face a Penrith Panthers side which has flown under the radar in 2018.

An off-season from hell last year, during which they lost captain Matt Moylan and Bryce Cartwright to the Sharks and Titans respectively, and also lost to the Brisbane Broncos in the semi-final, had many believing that coach Anthony Griffin would be the first coach to be dismissed this season.

However, the club appears to have moved on, notching up eight wins from their first eleven matches, including their last four in succession against the Bulldogs, Cowboys, Knights and the Wests Tigers.

Halfback Nathan Cleary made his return from injury against the Tigers last week, and won the battle against the side whom his father, and former Panthers mentor Ivan, currently coaches.

The most impressive aspect of the victory was not only the fact that the Panthers were able to keep the Tigers tryless, but also the way Cleary performed in his first match back in nearly two months.

In his absence, James Maloney has not only stepped up, but also proven his worth to the club, having arrived at the foot of the mountains in the wake of Matt Moylan’s sudden departure at the end of last season.

Already a premiership winner with the Roosters and the Sharks in 2013 and 2016 respectively, the NSW Origin five-eighth’s partnership with Cleary in the halves could prove to be the x-factor as the Panthers seek their third premiership, but first since 2003, this season.

As tough as this Saturday night’s match might be for the Dragons, it is also just as tough for the Panthers for the fact they twice lost to the Red V last year, including by 42-10 at Kogarah Oval in Round 1.

That result provided the springboard for the Dragons to start last year strongly, only to capitulate in the second half of the season to miss the finals altogether, but not before beating the mountain men once more by 16-14 at Panthers Stadium, the venue for this Saturday night’s clash, in Round 25.

On the flipside, while the Panthers started last season rather disastrously, they rebounded to eventually reach its third appearance in September in the past four years, bowing out to the Broncos in the second week of the finals.

This will be the only time the Panthers and Dragons meet in 2018, barring a likely September meeting, and a huge crowd is expected at the foot of the mountains for what is expected to be a titanic clash between the two best defensive sides in the competition so far.

While the Dragons have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the ladder with another victory on Saturday night, the Panthers can snatch top spot from the Dragons if (and only if) they win by a margin of 27 points or more (the Dragons’ points differential is +135 while the Panthers’ is +85).

Now it remains – who will take the points in what is undoubtedly the match to watch in Round 12, and more importantly, who will stake their claims to the Origin jumpers up for grabs before the teams are named next week?

We will all wait and watch with interest and intrigue this Saturday night.

The Panthers have had pretty much a dream run so far this season playing the Eels twice, the Dogs twice, Titans, Cowboys, Knights and only 3 top 8 clashes against the Sharks ( loss ) and the Rabbits ( win ) and the out of form Tigers last week. Now they face team No1 who they haven't beaten in a while and who have the forward pack to roll their big blokes. Their halves are close to the best in the league and it's them we have to keep quiet. I expect our forwards to run at Maloney every chance they get. I predict a top of the table clash will be cause for us to really focus and pull out a performance worthy of our place on the ladder. Go Saints !

This is a public service announcement

According to Penrith Panthers twitter this morning less than 3,5000 left for the game on Saturday night. I imagine these seats would be general admission only.

The trouble with nominating top 8 opponents is that it changes every week. This is why there is a gentleman's agreement on the Panthers forum not to talk about top 8 or top 4 opponents in terms of difficulty of the draw until the top 8 and top 4 are determined, ie after round 25.

Nonetheless, its true we've had a good draw, and its equally true you've had a dream run with injuries, which has helped your cause. Neither could have been predicted before the season started.

In our defence we showed up ready to play a top 4 team twice, the GF runners up twice, it's not our fault they didn't show up.

Also we've had at least 1/3 of our team out including our halfback and fullback. Could the Dragons handle that?

Gotta love the my penis is bigger than your penis arguement.

In any case its going to be a great game, 1 v 2 who would have thought that at ths start of the year approaching round 12.

As for the we played this team and you played that team and we've had injuries and you haven't it really has no bearing. They/we are professional football teams each player contracted to do a job, no matter if they've played 1 game or 300. As the old adage goes - you can only play whats put in front of you.
