Look I agree with the idea of NZ 2. The question is where would you put them? Auckland? Christchurch? Wellington?

The most important thing before we go with another NZ side is trying to work out what’s wrong with the current one and working out ways to support that
Christchurch for most of their games

1 or 2 games at Wellington
Dunedin
Hamilton

Or they can be just South Island and warriors play around the north island

How many kiwis have you ever met that don’t like rugby league. They are your ususal union toffs like in England or australia

plus super rugby has never been this vulnerable before. It’s not just a basket case here even the mz clubs are struggling and they just had a massive injection of private equity funds

How many Kiwis do you know? Have you been to NZ before? I can tell you now that Rugby Union and the All Blacks are a religion over there so let’s not kid ourselves that RL will be second fiddle over there

fun fact : the northern union got most of the ideas of rugby league from watching an all blacks game in England in 1905
Yeh a union mad city of 380k people is going to be able to sustainably host an nrl club. Rocks in your head. We aren’t the afl willing to throw $25mill a year at unsustainable clubs.

Loads of nrl clubs have those kind of catchments. Or close too.
Not every club has a million plus catchment

and the team will represent more than Christchurch even though the most successful union club in the world is based there and does fine

You would make it a South Island side in my opinion. It would be able to work. Would it be difficult? Sure but you could make it work.

The biggest problem with NZ 2 is the Warriors. You want them to actually be filled with Kiwi talent and going well before you put in another side.

Huh? You haven’t been to the country but you are saying that they would just slavishly follow the NRL and a second side.

It would be a challenge. Not impossible by any means but a challenge nonetheless

Name one that hasn’t had to have a pokie den bail it out, Newcastle, bust until bailed by pokie den, cowboys reliant on $3mill a year from pokie den, raiders reliant on $4mill a year from pokie dens. And these are rugby league cities! Name me one place sub 500k population that has a sustainable nrl club without pokie funding.

Brisbane won the spoon

Then they announced the dolphins now they are too 4

the warriors just need a good owner and coach
They will never have a problem with juniors

South Island or Wellington would be the go. None of this Travelling Wilburys idea. You have to actually base them somewhere.

Yeah but the Broncos have been a success for the majority of their existence. The Warriors have been a failure for most of their existence, so there is a difference.

The biggest problem with the Warriors is keeping and developing Kiwi talent. Recruiting Australian players and coaches hasn’t worked and will never work. Jesus Christ they have to get an assistant coach from Penrith to coach them and are recruiting blokes like Mitchell Barnett

So you agree it won’t work on their own.
Yep,Christchurch bears for few years, to become cc bears in 2030 lol.
I’m just humouring you

the team will be more than just Christchurch

and the bears are never relocating to Sydney or Gosford and once you see this you will realise what a missed opportunity this was for Perth

Warriors have (pre covid) poor crowds, low membership, generally crap development of players in a city of 1.6million. But somehow a club in a union mad city of 400k is going to be a powerhouse, seriously?

Do you remember what they were like in 2002 ?

look at the coaches they’ve had since they sacked him and you wonder why they struggle

look at the kinda of players nz can develop … manu, shek

they could’ve waited and got brad Arthur or chosen flanghan or the nz coach

they chose the Penrith guy

So tell me a club in a city size of Christchurch that is independently sustainable. Even ignoring that it’s a union mad city,

Well you are making a point on whether a community or society will accept a team without actually ever experiencing that society first hand. It seems strange. I can’t comment on South Africa because I have never been there (nor am I inclined to go there)

All I’m suggesting is that it won’t be easy. I am in favour of it but the same as any option outside of NSW/QLD, the game will be a niche or non-dominant sport. I’d love to be proven wrong but I can’t imagine the All Blacks never being the most important sporting team in New Zealand.

Why are you repeating yourself ?

add the population of the South Island plus Wellington and Hamilton that’s their catchment area

can’t be bothered to do it myself
