Perth’s metro population is 2 million (about 300k less than Brisbane).
1 that’s a lot of potential parochial eyeballs on screens.
2 if they get 1% of them to games that’s 20,000 at a game.
3 they have an appetite for RL
4 they have their own money, sponsors, tv market and provide a national foot print and a different time zone.
Perth don’t need the Bears.
They need a NRL licence.
Lets look at what Bears bring (based on an assumption they arent totally stupid and back down on their license ownership non negotiable)
1. Jnr pathways - yep certainly needed for Perth and would help for sure. Having said that the same pathways can be achieved by a Perth club partnering with any number of Qlnd cup sides or Mounties/Jets without taking on their identity. There's also an argument that Bears will put all their focus on NS development sides and little on WA pathways.
2. Fans - Reality is no one knows how many Bears fans will jump on a Perth team. Will some? Yes for sure. Will it be enough to make any real bottom line difference? hard to say. end of day any Perth team will live or die on its Perth fanbase, not a secondary one on the other side of the country. Will a fifo Sydney club turn Perth fans off? We are a pretty parochial lot in the West!
3. Funding - The $15mill investors BS is just that. Its possible sponsors in reality and whilst that is a good start any new NRL club needs to be aiming for $8-10mill a year in sponsors. IF Bears have pull still in Sydney market for sponsors and IF WA businesses arent put off by being a fifo Sydney club playing here then it could be a real positive. Having NS LC paying for Sydney based pathways programs is a plus but what about funding for WA pathways development? that will still need to sit with the NRL club in reality. NS LC isnt flush with spare cash so not sure there's much money on the table to invest in the NRL club from their pokie den.
4. Feel good - we hear about this a lot. It means jack sht to RL fans in WA, and in fact theres quite a lot of push back at a FIFO Sydney club playing here. Im sure it will make old timers in Sydney feel good but is that really a consideration for such an important strategic decision?
So can it work? Yes.
Can it work with the Bears non negotiables? Probably not.
Do we need the Bears to make it work in Perth? I would say no as long as the pathway and funding bases are covered by the other consortiums that are bidding and partnerships with 2nd tier clubs.
