Good on them. They have the money to do that.

Nevertheless that is not what is happening here. The Bears proposal is akin to the Swans or Lions taking games away from Sydney or Brisbane to gratify 50 or 60 year old South Melbourne or Fitzroy supporters.
Yeh but Sydney’s north shore is a gold mine where south Melbourne is a rust belt

literally the best suburbs in Australia or on par with the east

and yeh the afl leadership is stupid for backing gws thankfully we don’t have such leadership lol

North Sydney's crowds were never anything but very mediocre though, right up until the end of their existence.
Not a great argument as I’ve said

cowboys have had terrible crowds for much of their existence too esp for a one city town

not like say Newcastle

Saying that further expansion is tied to the on-field success or lack thereof on another club is laughably stupid. (peak Mark Geyer really).

In the US they accept that expansion teams will be dogshit for the first 5 or so years of their existence. For some reason in Australia, we expect them to be instantly successful, and if they are not we judge them a failure.

Sorry mate, I thought this was genuine account.

I didn't realise you were intentionally trolling, and I was so dumb you had to make it stupidly obvious with these far fetched posts.

Well played.

Yeh yeh I know how it goes don’t apply your own arguments to your own club to show the inconsistency

we are talking about 2 home games a year they will sell out no problems

so your argument is kinda irrelevant

Perth’s metro population is 2 million (about 300k less than Brisbane).

1 that’s a lot of potential parochial eyeballs on screens.
2 if they get 1% of them to games that’s 20,000 at a game.
3 they have an appetite for RL
4 they have their own money, sponsors, tv market and provide a national foot print and a different time zone.

Perth don’t need the Bears.

They need a NRL licence.

Nope just most of the league tragics here expect that it will need to be a success... if you know the history of expansion teams in NRLs history dating back to 1921, they rarely get past 2nd last place... only Melbourne Storm sky rocketed on their first year, bronx did ok, same as warriors... everyone else kaplonked... not sure why you need to judge an expansion team on its first season, should be judging teams on how badly they are coming for being around more than 50 years etc

Why expand when your not expanding the player pool

They need a NRL licence.
Lets look at what Bears bring (based on an assumption they arent totally stupid and back down on their license ownership non negotiable)

1. Jnr pathways - yep certainly needed for Perth and would help for sure. Having said that the same pathways can be achieved by a Perth club partnering with any number of Qlnd cup sides or Mounties/Jets without taking on their identity. There's also an argument that Bears will put all their focus on NS development sides and little on WA pathways.

2. Fans - Reality is no one knows how many Bears fans will jump on a Perth team. Will some? Yes for sure. Will it be enough to make any real bottom line difference? hard to say. end of day any Perth team will live or die on its Perth fanbase, not a secondary one on the other side of the country. Will a fifo Sydney club turn Perth fans off? We are a pretty parochial lot in the West!

3. Funding - The $15mill investors BS is just that. Its possible sponsors in reality and whilst that is a good start any new NRL club needs to be aiming for $8-10mill a year in sponsors. IF Bears have pull still in Sydney market for sponsors and IF WA businesses arent put off by being a fifo Sydney club playing here then it could be a real positive. Having NS LC paying for Sydney based pathways programs is a plus but what about funding for WA pathways development? that will still need to sit with the NRL club in reality. NS LC isnt flush with spare cash so not sure there's much money on the table to invest in the NRL club from their pokie den.

4. Feel good - we hear about this a lot. It means jack sht to RL fans in WA, and in fact theres quite a lot of push back at a FIFO Sydney club playing here. Im sure it will make old timers in Sydney feel good but is that really a consideration for such an important strategic decision?

So can it work? Yes.
Can it work with the Bears non negotiables? Probably not.
Do we need the Bears to make it work in Perth? I would say no as long as the pathway and funding bases are covered by the other consortiums that are bidding and partnerships with 2nd tier clubs.

Easily fixed with a couple of QRL cup partnerships and a sht load more funding to WA pathways and participation.

You’ll be giving WC kids an option to take up RL. Build it and they will come.
Whos paying for that??? ARLC don't want to create clubs then pay for it... they want a well run club that already exists and has talented player pool to poach off already= redcliffe... ...heres ...your ...licence
Tell me again what perth have?

the bears? ...Heres ...your ...license

Just about funding in reality for elite pathways. If the Perth consortium can show funds to invest in WA pathways and have a QRL cup club, or two, in principal agreements then those boxes are ticked. If we are only going to ever have clubs in the NRL who have a pokie den then the games not going to be growing very far!

PS the ARLC should be investing in grassroots in WA, its their job to do so!
