Exactly. Some people here forget how woeful Souths were once they were re-admitted - and without the massive capital injection from Crowe & Holmes a Court (and substantial modernizing of their business model) they would likely have stayed a very average club.
What massive investment ?

crowe put in probably 3 million then the business became self sufficient based on huge numbers of season tickets sold

it was their fans realising they had lost something important that played a huge role in what they are today

sure none of it was possible without Crowe but the guys a tight wad

Pretty good odds I’d say

funnily enough he doesn’t look 70 either
Brad Pitt lol... Jefferies could add some sway if he's committed... Perth Bears though, if they want a game at NSO then convince Manly or another club to take it there.

He asked which actors

the comedian wants to invest ten million

and it will be two games at nso and ten at Perth

Perth gets juniors and a leagues club plus tradition Sydney members so to give up two games is worth it

People also forget that Crowe and Holmes à Court's bid for the club was only successful because the Rabbitoh's were on the precipice of folding again, and almost certainly would have sometime in the late 00s if it wasn't for the immediate cash injection that they offered.

Look don't get me wrong, what Rusty and his partners have done with the club is an impressive achievement to be lauded, but let's not pretend that there's a high chance that similar scenarios will play out at other clubs if we just drag their arses along long enough.

There was a lot of opposition to Crowe and Holmes a Court buying a stake in South Sydney. The ownership needed his money to bail them out, but they wanted to keep running the club the same way that got them into such a dire position.

The Dales, Jets, Dirty Reds and Varsity could put in a joint venture. 3 matches at Henson Park, 3 at University Oval, 3 at Wentworth Park and 3 at Jubilee Oval

Oh…And the 13th game in Perth to capture the 4th metropolitan market.
This is obviously the way forward for a national competition while not neglecting the clubs’ traditional fans

Jim Jefferies has intimated that he’s only seriously interested in a return of the North Sydney Bears, if you know what I mean, and that simply isn’t on the cards.

I also highly doubt that he personally has the liquidity to fund such a venture, that he actually has the pull to attract other serious investors, or that the Bears would actually seriously consider his offer unless it simply entailed his consortium giving the Bears money for token positions in the club.

You asked the question

now you are shifting the goal posts massively

the article literally says investing as in a Perth bears bid

and when Crowe took over south’s he wasn’t that rich.

it’s later on when they got packer and the tech guy but even then they don’t put in money to fund the club.

Geez, Jim Jeffrey's actually has a bit on how bad he is with money and contracts ( pretty funnny) if there's any truth at all - like at all then his support means nothing along with the friend of a friend thing with Brad pitt...

So you have a broke comedian that knows Brad Pitt...

I haven't moved the goal posts at all. Your example doesn't even come close to living up to the criteria I set out.

Jim Jefferies isn't an A lister, he doesn't have the cash to do what Crowe did, so far there's no reason to believe that his connections are willing to commit anywhere near the kind of investment he'd require, and the Bears almost certainly wouldn't be interested in any offers for the club anyway.

Sure the article mentions Perth, but Jim is pretty inconspicuous on that subject. It's all "they could just be called "The Bears"', 'I know that they couldn't be based in Sydney, but we could play multiple games at NS Oval a year, and there's a lot of potential options for a base' BS.

No commitment to a relocation, no indication of a plan to build a new fanbase in a new market, just the same tired, old, and insulting, plan to simply use another market as a backdoor into league.

He was however significantly richer than Jefferies is, and he had mates with personal fortunes in excess of hundreds of millions of dollars offering to help out.

Lets try to put it into perspective; Jefferies has an estimated net worth of around US$10mil. At the time Rusty bought the Rabbitohs his net worth would have be in the 10s of millions, almost certainly more that US$50mil, and is now worth somewhere between US$100-150mil.

Are you starting to see the difference yet?

I see the whole " Bring back the bears" crowd as purely self intrest. They aren't true league fans because they would have found a new club by now ... how many years has it been?
So they won't watch another team after all this time?
And if they are then we don't get any new fans 🤷‍♂️
Having the bears back is a step backwards without doubt for league , so they rather see an old club at the detriment of league?
And if Perth does get a licence, surely they deserve a brand of their own! It shouldn't be watered down with some old nostalgia from a small group of people on the other side of the country.
I say f**k the Bears.

TBF, it's a little more complex than that .

What is genuinely unforgivable is that a lot of them refuse to even support the Bears unless they're in the NRL.

I talk to and meet other old Bears fans all the time, and they almost universally stopped following the club either when they merged or after the merger fell apart, and act as if the Bears don't exist anymore.

It's not like they can't buy a membership or a ticket and head down to NSO ever second week right now if they want to, they just refuse to, and as a fan whom never abandoned the Bears, I get to a point with most "fans" like that where I'm just like if you refused to support the club when things got rough then you don't really deserve the club at all.

End of day whichever bid the WA Govt decide to hitch their support to will win It. No way nrl doesnt take the opportunity that will afford.
hopefully it’s a strong WA led bid.

You're counting your chickens before they hatch.

NZ's hopes have probably died with the death of Spark sport, but I can definitely see the Bears in some form, or even another Qld side, getting up under the current administration.

We know from the report released a couple of years ago by Easts Tigers that they plan on having a team in the NRL within the next decade. If there's going to be any competition for the 18th licence it will more likely than not come from them. I really hope the Bears are told they're not getting the licence, but V'landys opened the door for them by bringing them up when questioned about Perth. The best case for the game is a Perth-based consortium getting the 18th licence.
