Nrl is already raiding the Aussie union ranks as it is. The aru are losing most of their good juniors

illas Crichton Murray keary Cronk etc

imagine how much better the wallabies would be with them
Weren't they just all league playing juniors that went to schools that only played union which led to them spending time as union players, and union sycophants then claiming them as union players poached by the evil nrl??

No mention of NRL/Stadiums or sport in general in the WA budget announced 5 days ago.

I'd love to see some sort of confirmation that the WA Govt is proposing to underwrite an NRL team.

I'd also love to see what value the Bears bring to this besides "brand recognition" for boomers.
They're not going to budget for something that doesn't yet exist yet and could be 5 years away lol. They budgeted to spend $35mill on HBF park in last years budget to get it upgraded for Women's world cup.

re Bears I guess it is an established Jnr development system and cash, maybe.
The rest re brand value, fans etc is questionable.

There are a few on here suggesting that if WA and Bears do merge, all home games should be at Perth.

Yeah, not sure if the Bears would agree to that arrangement..If the Bears get no games at NSO, then what is the point.

Personally what i like to see happen is for Perth to go at alone as perhaps " West Coast Pirates". Although I dont like the name, it does sound like an AFL team.

And in the 2030's, introduce a 19th and 20th team. These teams could be NZ2 and Central Coast Bears. Or introduce a second division.

Honestly I prefer two divisions instead of mergers. But promotion/relegation isn't the Australian way.

For the Bears it is the only way they will get the brand back in the NRL. There will never be another regional NSW team added and they know it. Now if they think they can start this way then one day move it back is another matter and why they can only ever have a small part of the ownership so they can never have those controlling decisions.

The colours and the brand are the point.

Yeh but many were lost to union forever

what usually happens is the rich private school offers them free schooling (it’s 30 to 40k a year) as a bribe to get them away from league

Disagree if they wait long enough central coast will get a team. This gets them in maybe 10 to 15 years earlier

Looking at the history of NRL expansion I highly doubt it. IF Perth is 18 then it will in all likelihood be NZ2 and Bris3 for 19 and 20 which wont likely happen for decades. Sure they may get a CC club in around 2060!

Lmao your just jealous your club can’t use their juniors

Brookie was a dump forever that didn’t stop manly taking the license away from a far better ground at Gosford
This bid isn’t talking about playing at Gosford, it’s talking about playing at NSO. If anyone thinks playing games at NSO is a good idea, they really are blinded by nostalgia. It’s an awful RL ground, plain and simple.

I’ve said before that I thought the outcome of the merger failure was awful and it would have been better to have been forced to continue existing in some form. The current arrangement is sub-optimal for RL, the Norths district existing has done nothing for the game except allow Norths to continue to cling to life and have some form of a base to continue chasing attempts to re-enter the NRL. It doesn’t matter if their territory went to Manly, Roosters, Parra, Tigers or whoever else, they should have received the Newtown treatment long ago and we should be discussing the Pirates entering the NRL, not another half-baked Bears bid discussing playing NRL games at NSO.

Like I said Brookie being a dump didn’t stop manly

if this bid is successful norths keep their territory. Plus it will help manly fill Brookie once a year

and norths have a leagues clubs manly don’t

Straight away you've undermined the club's identity as a Perth club.

Do the Swans play games in Melbourne, Lakers in Minneapolis, Rams in Cleveland or St. Louis etc, etc?! No they don't.

Why don't they do that; because keeping their finger in the old market's pie makes it look like they aren't committed to the new market and that they want to keep the old market as a backup should things go sour in the new one, and that's commercial cancer.

Besides, if the first game in Sydney was successful there'd soon be demand for more, and once the precedent had been set there'd be no rational argument against more games in Sydney so long as they're profitable.
At that point you'd have people, both internally and externally (such discussion in the media is also commercial cancer BTW), arguing that any game that they believe would or could be more successful in Sydney should be played in Sydney, at which point it's inevitable that more games would be moved to Sydney given time.

In pursuit of maximising profits the club would kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
Exactly, imagine if the WA Bears are playing the Roosters in pouring rain in WA in front of 11k, while the sun is shining in Sydney. There’d be nonstop sooking about how the game could be being played in front of a packed Bear Park, instead of over in WA, and calls for more games to be moved back to Sydney etc.

Brookie is at least a rectangular ground! No games should be played at NSO, go to a NSW Cup game there to remind yourself of how bad it is for watching RL.

Norths should never have kept their territory in the first place, the past 20+ years have been a result of mismanagement.

Homebush isn’t rectangular nor is kogarah

And central coast stadium craps over Brookie yet manly chose their spiritual home

if this helps revive league on the north shore why are you opposed to this

It gets the brand back in the NRL and they’ll be back playing in Sydney the equivalent of nearly every second week (as the away team)- it’s a lot better than what they have now!

I think prioritising RL growth in WA is more important than allowing old Bears fans to indulge in their nostalgia. Reviving RL on the North Shore could have been done by not allowing the current situation to occur. The Bears should have had their territory reallocated to other teams, as was done to Newtown, and Manly, the Roosters, Tigers or whoever else received parts or all of the Bears’ territory would have had 20+ years to grow a following there. That can still be done, reviving RL on North Shore doesn’t require the Bears, it’s what Bears fans would prefer, but Sydney has ample RL resources to cover the North Shore without any involvement from the Bears.
