WA BEARS

Craziest ane most insulting proposition ever.

@TBoon and I were roasted for suggesting Wests Tigers rebrand as the Western Tigers and take six games a year to Perth, yet there are people on here cheering a new licence being handed to the lame-arse Bears so they can do the same thing!

If the WA government is serious about this then they need to liaise with Wests Tigers and ARLC about relocating full time to Perth as that would be a far better deal for them - - and the game in general - - than this plot by the Bears. Tigers aren't getting a new stadium and Leichhardt shouldn't have a cent wasted on it. Play all 12 home games in Perth and have a deal with the ARLC that forces all away games against Sydney clubs to be held at Parramatta Stadium for Balmain fans. That way we get less games played at dilapidated suburban grounds and Parramatta Stadium gets more content. The games could be held as double headers alongside Parramatta Eels home games to increase attendance and cut back on production costs for Foxtel.

Yeah, burn large fanbase in fast growing area to set up team in city that'll never follow sport

If it puts Perth ahead of nz2 for team 18 it might be the way to go. Who knows if a new leader comes in and they decide to stop expanding after 18 teams

If the proposal, as reported, talks about playing “home” games at NSO then it is a stupid idea. If, on the other hand, all home games are played at Perth, then ok, it is a legitimate option.

If the WA BEARS eventuate, NSO should have absolutely NO games and anyone who says that it should is a monumental f**kwit.

Exactly. They either have to be a West Australian side or the proposal should be off the table. This is not even talking about the fact that NSO is just not up to standard

Yeah.. it's not my *preferred* way of getting a Perth team in the NRL (nothing wrong with the Pirates bid as-is), BUUUUT...

If the story is true, and the WA Government are sounding out the NRL to ask "Is linking with the Bears the key to securing that next expansion spot?", then that's just sad - and it speaks volumes of how the NRL view expansion (ok if done through the filter of "heritage clubs".. hello Dolphins!)

It is slightly sad I agree but one thing it does confirm, is that there is interest from the West in having a side.

There has been a few people trotting out the line that there is no or would be no interest from WA in having a side. The actions of the WA government (not only this but also trying to get the GF and the other bid options like the Reds/Pirates) strongly suggest otherwise

To be fair that’s the government seeing their potential

people were talking about what kind of fan base and tv viewership they can get

which they will but it won’t be more than other potential sides eg nz central coast etc

are they a better choice than nz2 followed by southwestern team in Brisbane ? I don’t think so tbh

but if the wa govt throws a lot of money at it things change

or if they get the bears on board (which I’m not a fan of) that might swing vlandys around as it’s new Perth team plus revival of the bears

the swans have done well off the whole bloods and south Melbourne thing

plus bringing back the bears will be a smaller version of bringing back south’s

it might well help the game get corporate support from the north shore

Basically this.

NRLWA has stated their case to the NRL on several grounds - a substantial sized market in Perth, a new timezone for TV, a reasonable "ex-pat" east coast/NZ community, more of a nationwide exposure for sponsors, a solid history as a strong affiliated state, the burgeoning local league scene, a unique brand & color set, heck even "righting the wrong" of ditching the Reds... and nothing more than lip-service & the occasional game has eventuated.

If an appeal to nostalgia is what it takes under the current NRL administration, then that's what it takes.

The issue is "at what cost?"

Yeh I didn’t like the tone of the article where it made it sound like ns were in a strong position

if they are thinking of a 50 50 joint venture I’m not sure I would support that. This has to be a Perth team.

My cousin was friends with him way back. We drove him home from a game and I was too scared to tell him to get stuffed

he was literally still saying the nrl should only be 14 teams and this was in 2000 approx

he did get us in the storm dressing sheds which was pretty cool

What evidence do you have to suggest otherwise?!

LMAO. You’re demanding evidence from other people yet you continue to sprout absolute rubbish with no evidence provided, essentially based on your feelings.

Go look at crowd figures and you’ll see that Perth and Adelaide’s attendances were higher than some Sydney sides. Factor that in, as well as the nominal growth in WA’s population and economy, then one should be pretty confident that they should get enough support.

Also, do you think the WA government would bother looking at this proposal if there wasn’t a perceived appetite for a side there?

No remains of any deceased bear shall be removed from any cemetery, except upon written order of the NRL having jurisdiction, or of the superior court of the broadcasters ratings in which such cemetery is situated. A duplicate copy of the order shall be maintained as a part of the records of the cemetery.

One factor here is how the decision by World Rugby to make Australia the 2027 Rugby World Cup hosts will factor into NRL decision making re: expansion.

(Side note: that topic in itself may be worthy of a thread somewhere here, because the prospect of a re-energised RU surely should figure in the NRL's thinking?)

The signs were pointing towards NZ 2 as the 18th team, but given that Super Rugby has a Perth team would the NRL now look west instead, in a push to have an Australian footprint that more the matches it's RU counterpart? (It has a 3 season window between the Dolphins debut in 2023 and the RWC in 2027)

If the NRL is now leaning towards Perth, the WA Govt & NRLWA don't need the Bears for anything.

As others have said I’m sure the form of the warriors is a concern for nz2. Not that it stopped the dolphins given the broncos got the spoon
