the nrl still hasn’t done the stadium deal where the grand final stays in Sydney

that’s supposed to allocate another 800 million for stadia

assuming pvl plays nice and counts Penrith as part of it that still leaves close to 500 million left to spend

brookvale is first cab of the rank to replace the hill at say 200 to 250 million

still leaves a lot of money left for Newcastle Wollongong or shark park

Phil rothfield has been using his articles to push for shark park to get some cash so a modest stand where the hill is now could be on the cards

and the previous liberal fed govt spent 20 million on the new western grandstand so there’s a precedent of govts spending money on private stadia

on nso oval the ground has been maintained as is for decades it’s just a boutique little ground

Dolphins got Federal and Local council money to do the Kayo Stadium upgrades

I get the sense they dont have a choice. And again its so RL to be even in that situation.

I look at the Dolphins who didn't start from scratch. They were an existing QRL club in a heartland state. The alternative to the Bears is a Perth standalone team, where you are starting from scratch in a non heartland state.

With regards to Swans and Lions, both clubs are established today. However at one point,,weren't both clubs close to folding?

After hearing the John Sackson interview, it does seem like the bid will have attention to every detail on how the club will function.

Plus the broadcasters would be happy to have a familiar brand to sell and promote Perth matches on the east coast. At the end of the day, broadcasters have the gold, and would've provided expansion feedback to the NRL.

Souths have a lot of support over here, yeah. Rusty taking the Bunnies here for quite a few years in a row several years ago and them really pushing a Western membership really gained them a strong Bunnies following.

The level of ‘I told you so’ on this thread is hilarious. For several years we’ve had people here absolutely writing off a Perth bid via some of the most hysterical rationale you’d ever wish to read.
Most of it has been driven by typical Sydney paranoia about expanding to areas outside the usual RL strongholds.
Once the Bears came into the equation the lads suddenly changed their tune. It will be okay as long as a Sydney club is there to support and guide our little WA friends.
All of a sudden it became doable but only if it was held together by a failed old Sydney club with a small participant base to provide the ‘pathways’.
These same cynics also constantly harp on about the Storm despite all their onfield and off field success.
I’m a big fan of Vlandys but I’m not a fan of the Bears having any influence over this Perth club. There should be no home games in Sydney for this club. It’s a Perth club and the NRL need to demonstrate good faith in this market. Playing a home game in Sydney reflects the mind set of Sydney centric conservatives who lack faith in the game in new markets.
As much as I’ve disagreed with PR over the years his views of the set up of this club have been consistent and in my view correct.
Smart asses saying ‘I told you so’ when all they’ve done is done a turnaround due to the Bears factor is, to be frank, laughable.

Bit hard to say Norths V Souths was the first game in the NSWRL.
There were two doubleheaders, one at Birchgrove, one at Wentworth Park. One could as easily make the claim for Easts v Newtown. They were in the double header along with Glebe & Newcastle.

Roger Cook has launched another impassioned plea for the NRL to bring a team to Perth, with the sport’s boss revealing the WA Premier ‘rings me every day’ to plead the case.

Now why the WA bid team has decided to partner with Bears we may never know. Maybe they were told they had to, maybe they couldn't raise the start up funds needed, maybe they couldn't find a different pathway partner, maybe NS or some of their investors offered something too good to say no to financially. Who knows.

Back to the opening game, depends on the ambition. If playing it at HBF park might as well be a lessor team as it will sell out regardless. If they are ambitious and want to get 35k+ at Optus you need a Souths, Warriors or Broncos to help get bums on seats.

If at Optus it'd be good to offer some travel packages for the 200k Bears fans (allegeldy lol) on the East coast.
