Well there is nothing about it on the NZRL website. Other than that they are in talks.

You'd think if they signed him there would be, but then again maybe not.

Bennett remains tight-lipped

WAYNE Bennett last night refused to be drawn on reports from New Zealand he has agreed to a three-year deal to coach the Kiwis.

With an official announcement set for this week, Bennett would neither confirm or deny the Kiwi newspaper report, which boldly claimed the NZRL was set to announce his appointment as new national coach as early as today.

New Zealand's Sunday Star-Times yesterday proclaimed the former Kangaroos coach had agreed to defect and would mastermind the Kiwis' World Cup campaign against his Australian successor, Ricky Stuart.

The foreign report could prove false, as other sources suggest Bennett could yet limit his involvement with New Zealand to a coaching co-ordinator role - with a Kiwi-born mentor to take the top job.

It is understood the Broncos coach does not covet a major role in team selection, given the considerable extra burden of studying the form of Kiwi-eligible players both in the NRL and English Super League placed upon the national coach.

The newspaper reports that Bennett has requested Storm assistant coach Stephen Kearney and NZ-based Paul Bergman be his assistants, but that NZRL officials were manoeuvring for local district officials to fill management roles.

NZRL representatives yesterday went to ground, while Bennett confirmed his intention to remain silent on the matter until an official announcement was made.

"It's up to the New Zealand league," he said.

Bennett's ties with New Zealand were strengthened last November when he coached the commemorative All Golds match in England.

It is all just speculation.
I'm sure none of them know anything about it.

He has done his time as a player and as an assistant to a very successful outfit in the Storm. This was not done just by bellamy alone. Stevo has had a hands=on in everything. He said just before Bluey was elected and his name was put forward, that he wasnt ready at that time. I am sure that if asked again, he would accept.
Now there has been talk about Ruben and Stacey being in the mix in some way. With Rubes, no. !!!. He is still playing and he lifts the boys mainly by his presence on the field. That would not happen if he had another role.
Then theres Stacey as another mentioned. Once again my answer to tjat would be NO !!. Maybe as a runner, or in moari terms, orange boy.
Both he and Rubes are of the same mould. PRESENCE. !!
I would certainly take a look at Monty tho. As stupid as that may sound, he would command a lot of respect in that inviroment.
They have taken away an elder before which teaches protocol. I cant think of anybody more passionate, who was a kiwi and a highly respected one at that, in Kevin Tamati. I saw him a couple of months agao, and the attenton he attracted was really an eye opener.

You asked, I tell Skinner

Coach..... .Kearney
ASS..........Norton
Motivator...Monty
Runner......Toovey err I mean Stacey
Elder.........Kevin Tamati

And maybe one other, just below Norton, for future consideration.

Then a rule. No member of the NZRL are allowed within twenty Kilometeres of the team.

Radio sport is reporting that Bennet doesnt want the head job.

According to Stanaway on 1 news Bennett isn't interested in the full on job, more of an advisory role, and it was mentioned he wanted to work with Kemble

The way Roy and Co spouted off you would have thought they would have checked what sort of role he wanted

Stanaway on TV1 is reporting that Benny won't be the senior coach...no interest.

He is pushing Kearney, but not for me thanks, way too early.

We are completely f**ked.

I dont know where to start with this post.

You don't want Wiki and Stacey involved, yet you have monty on as a 'motivator'. If you think Ruben doesn't offer anything off the field you are very sorely mistaken.

And Kearney as head coach? He hasn't even coach an ESL or NRL team yet..... sound familiar?

Yet, you want to throw Kearney in at the deep end but take Norton on as an Assistant coach for the 'future' ?????? If i didnt know better i would of looked at your lineup and thought Kearney to be the older, and more experienced of the two.

I have no problems with a Kearney as head coach and a Bennett as advisor. So long as the grim faced one is involved in some way, no problems at all.

Regardless of the make up at least we'll know the player's will respect the coach and respect the jersey again. That's half the battle won right there for a Kiwi team.

Thank you, thank you. Somebody actually who knows the difference.

Oh I realise the difference, I just don't agree with taking on an Assistant club coach as the national coach.

You have the most experienced coach going round in Bennett, somebody who Kearney could learn alot from as his assisstant. Then 1 - 2 years you would hope that Kearney would be ready to step into the fold. But not yet.

Im not attacking your right to have a coach, Im just dumbfounded that you would be so against this opportunity, an opportunity for the kiwis to earn some credibility back. Taking on Kearney as head coach would not do that, infact it follows the NZRL's history of making Mickey Mouse appointments.

Of course you are, but people are freely able to question other people's opinion, just as you are entitled to question theirs.
