You cant teach players x factor.

Few have real nrl star quality x factor.

Ponga, walsh, latrell etc. Blokes that can literally do something from absolutely nothing when they have no right to.

Thats not stuff any nrl coach has taught them... for the most part they have all been doing the things they do since they were kids...

The biggest and most important part of defence is attitude.

With the right attitude you can get blokes performing in a good system.

You cant miraculously turn them into a star...

You said scouts look for defence 1st...

I call bs on that... yes its an admirable thing to have but the defensive standard in ball, matts flegg etc is not great... players learn the importance of defense as they move through the grades.

Greg waddell wasnt a star defender
Cartwright was a deadset horrible defender
Jennings a horrible defender as a junior

Joseph suuaalii wasnt in hot demand cause he was a gun defender..

Same was walsh

These guys and sooooo many more got scouted cause they were freaks with the ball in hand.

Coaches back themselves to train players into good defenders because the star factor they possess doesnt come along everyday...

If i was a scout i certainly wouldnt be knocking back the next walsh or tago or ponga because they have shit defense as an 14 or 14 year old.

Because you only have to look at MJ as the perfect example...

Deadset horrible defender as a kid and relied purely on his attacking brilliance yet turned into one of the best defensive centres in the game..

He had the x factor... defence was taught..

Correct.

Alamonti we signed. The plan will be to get him to being an NRL standard defender in our system.

Then we can make the most of his physical traits. like Crichton he can be an x factor to get crucial tries

As opposed to getting a good defender and making them taller and faster

I will dumb it down for you.

We signed Alamonti who is at this stage not an NRL defender.

If you can't teach defence and we base our side on defence why did Ivan buy him?
When did I say that you can’t teach defence? I said it’s harder to teach, it’s also the reason he has had to take a big pay cut and is looking to improve

Spot on

Ill will add their are plenty of people that do get brought in or recruited for their defensive game and general hard work...

But as you, its much easier to teach someone good defence than it is somehow make them faster, stronger, and teach them game breaking skills.

Anyone that watched junior videos of inglis as a 14 or 15 year old could tell he was going to be a star... hes defence was elite after a few years under bellamy.. certainly wasnt always like that..

But bellamy didnt give him those attacking attributes... their is videos out there of him doing shit in school boys and you can watch videos of him doing the exact same thing for qld.

X factor is truly a special thing and when a coach gets someone with those skills its about polishing the not so good parts of their game.

Tago has x factor... you could argue he had defensive issues and ball handling issues but cleary got rid of those pretty quick

More dribble.

Mate this is just not how the actual world of professional rugby league works.

Defence like i said is attitude.. it comes down to the player.

This isn't new... listen to any commemtator whose played nrl any week and they will say 3 or 4 times a game defence is an attitude thing..

If a bloke that is an avg defender is willing to get better and learn and put his body on the line a coach is halfway their..

The issue for Cartwright all those years wasn't that he was struggling to understand defensive structures...

Its he was lazy and could not be effed to put his body on the line..

He was used to be a bigger kid in the juniors and dominating and he wasnt used to the hard work and commitment required to be a good defender in the nrl...

Just throwing an arm out like he did for the first half of his career isn't him struggling with the structure... its pure lazyness..

Theres countless blokes like him.

This year he put his head down and body on the line and had probably his best year.

Of course. Alex Twal will have a new club soon enough. Likely to the Dogs

They also play in the Flegg GF, They won't be signing the worker from there. They will sign to most powerful, Fastest players and fix the rest

I actually think twal will be a great signing.

I watched most of the tigers games this year amd he was one of their best.

Has a good step at the line and a knack for beimg able to brush of the first man.

Good business by gus that if its for the right price.

Any news on the Luai fitness test? He was supposed to be tested today. The silence is deafening.

The overwehelming evidence proves otherwise
No mate, the overwhelming evidence shows that if a kid can’t be taught to work with in a defensive structure, he won’t be recruited.

it’s the 1st question out of every recruiters mouth.
“He looks good on his feet, But how’s his defence, can he read?”

Every time…

Yeah he offers what they lack.

Just back to what you said about Cartwright. I put Alamonti in that same boat.

That 66-0 game for example. He was on the right with all rookies, He should of been put in between JAC and Burton. Ciraldo will
Learn from it, Alamonti will get fit and learn our system then see what he has

Of course it is but if that player has made 1000 tackles for the tournament but has no tries, linebreaks, tackle busts etc. he isn't getting picked up.

Certainly by the time a player hits an NRL squad they have proven themselves in defence. We aren't talking junior footy here. We are comparing NRL players

I said it’s the 1st thing they look at, not the only thing.

Mate you talk about teaching a kid to defend in a structure in your first paragraph.

Second paragraph you are saying that they need to be a good defender to be recruited.

The defence in matts, ball, flegg suggests the vast majority of kids are pretty avg defenders.

Players like jennings, Cartwright etc etc etc would never have been recruited....

You don't hear about clubs paying 500k for a 18 year cause the kid can defend... (suuallii....)

They pay top money cause they have x factor and they have physical attributes that are freakish..

Learning to defend really isnt hard. As i said and literally every commentator says countless times every week... its an attitude thing.

Do you think penrith atm has all the best defenders in the nrl??? In every single position??? Do you think all our players have the best footy iq in the comp???

No, we have a team full of extremley motivated individuals that have a rock solid attitude to defence.

They work hard for each ogher on the inside and slide hard to cover each other.

They are extremely fit and have the best line speed in the comp...

These arent a learning the defence...

These are learning the fundamentals of what it takes to be a fg nrl player for the Panthers.

Hard work for each other..not giving up for each other..

Yes we have good structures but structure means nothing legit nothing without attitude.

You can have the best defensive coach in the history of the game but if you have half a dozen Cartwrights out there and brent nadens than you aremt going to stop trys.
