I think we all agree that the next side should be a new market - Just where is the question

Say Perth is in, what % of players do you realistically think would consider a move?

Cowboys, Canberra, Knights, Warriors and GC all struggle to recruit but have the fallback of having Juniors and a player development structure to in theory get them out any holes.

Dolphins have basically had a crack at anyone on the market - even local Queenslanders.
Yet have come up short.

The have mainly discards who have history with Bennett in most cases are Queenslanders and are returning home.

The big positive for them is their great lower grades setup, It will allow the likes of Katoa and other kids the chance to develop properly.

Something Perth lacks, If they can't attract players or have a decent 2nd tier setup. Then they will struggle in those areas when stacked up against the other locations
Perth will need probably 3 years advance notice of their entry and that will give them enough time

this year the dolphins have 2 million of cap space and pretty much the whole comp has spent their cap except the dogs

I’m an ex Balmain fan

I want this to happen
For me It ticks all the boxes and is a no-brainer.

You get to link up with a historical and traditional team that shares the same brand and queensland gets another NRL team and brisbane gets a genuine brisbane club based in the city full-time playing out of suncorp stadium.

We would rather do it our way then rely on a link to a hated Sydney rival.

Regardless, for mine the Dolphins need 7 to 10 years of clean air before you even think about another Brisbane team, and for mine I don't see another one coming along for 20 years

Here’s what Nick polites thinks about another brisbane nrl team

Broncos will never allow it

but it’s a great idea

Wa and sa

they might have decent pop but we wont get more than 1 or 2 percent of them as Active fans

Firstly it depends on what the definition of active fanbase is. For example, in terms of Australian winter sports I follow League but then I also follow cricket, baseball, tennis, soccer etc. They are probably a lot of people just on balance of probability who follow a lot of different sports and not tied to just one.

Secondly, you also have to look at the what that market in terms of commercial presence. You could pick an area which is safer but the commercial advantage is much less

It’s one suburb out of many that Penrith get players from

That is true but you would never have a team called Mt Druitt would you. For example, I could argue that more players are produced from Northern NSW than from Melbourne (that would be the case) but I would never argue that a team from Coffs Harbouf would have the same commercial value as one from Melbourne.

Essentially you are arguing the value of a team only from one perspective.

No idea how aussie RL politics work but what business is it of theirs?

Surely the NRL is run democratically and not dictated to by any 1 club?
Nope

broncos started super league war to kill of the second brisbane side when they came in

when peace was made it was a condition the crushers were killed off

the broncos then put in a clause that no new side could be started in Brisbane for 17 years

when vlandys wanted to add a team he went and got Murdoch approval first

they still own a majority of the broncos shares

My point was for all the junior develop in vic it would be on par with one suburb in penriths network

1% active fans is 22,000 people in perth, a sell out every game then lol
most clubs could only dream of 1% active fans from their catchments. If we get 2% we’ll have to play at optus! I don’t think he thought that comment through!

2015

yep and Murdoch still has a lot of control over the game via foxtel tv rights

you know at one stage news ltd owned 50 percent of the nrl and took out 100 mill in dividends

and they were negotiating with themselves in a way for the pay tv contract lol

I’m not disagreeing with you. But I think you have to have a balance. You need to have a balance between sides that attract money and corporates and those that might be smaller and produce players. We have a lot of the latter but probably not enough of the former other than say the Broncos, Storm and a few others.

Smaller still means being able to pay your way. Look you might think of me as anti PNG but I’m not. If PNG was developed or semi developed then it would be the biggest no brainer of all.

I want PNG to be introduced when they have a good chance to succeed.

I’m obviously talking ten years plus down the track when the nrl has money for such vanity projects
