Yes and no, I'm a Southport Sharks member for the all you can eat seafood, but most people here on the GC associate the Sharks with success. You routinely hear about the other AFC's complaining that all their kids leave to go play for Southport.Leagues club members don't equal football club fans.
Besides, I don't think it would have mattered what name you gave an AFL team on the GC, they were always going to struggle for a generation or two.
There's no doubting that branding is important, but broadly speaking I think it's influence is highly overstated on here, and a lot of people have a tendency to confuse brands they personally don't like for bad brands.
Redcliffe Dolphins joined Brisbane comp 1960. Miami Dolphins established 1966.
They were in a lower tier comp and known as the Shellgrit from 1947.I thought 1947

Being associated with success doesn't change the fact that leagues club's appeal to a broad section of society independent of football, and that the vast majority of the members of all leagues clubs aren't active fans of that club's team and never will be. I'd even be willing to bet that in most cases the majority of a LC's membership whom do actively support a team support one other than the LC's team.Yes and no, I'm a Southport Sharks member for the all you can eat seafood, but most people here on the GC associate the Sharks with success. You're not wrong that new teams tend to struggle, but a lot of Southport fans were turned off by the refusal, mainly because they'd spent decades campaigning to be the team, much like Port Adelaide. They pull a few thousand to reserve grade games.
Don't the Panthers have 150k Leagues club members or thereabouts? imagine if they could boast those numbers as their members.Being associated with success doesn't change the fact that leagues club's appeal to a broad section of society independent of football, and that the vast majority of the members of all leagues clubs aren't active fans of that club's team and never will be. A few thousand active supporters also isn't enough to support an AFL team, nor would it make a significant impact on the Suns numbers if we assume you could merge the two fanbases.
I'd also be highly sceptical of the claim that they average a few thousand per game, if that is what you are actually claiming, but that's neither here nor there.
If they charged them an extra $2 a year FC member fee then they could.Don't the Panthers have 150k Leagues club members or thereabouts? imagine if they could boast those numbers as their members.
And lose money doing so?If they charged them an extra $2 a year FC member fee then they could.
The Raiders have five Leagues clubs in the ACT/Queanbeyan alone.Don't the Panthers have 150k Leagues club members or thereabouts? imagine if they could boast those numbers as their members.
True now, but in the olden days we did - at least in a larger degree than now.People don’t generally join a leagues club because they are a fan of the football team lol
Unless they are refering to dodgy tradesmen who do shit work on the cheap100%, I always found it weird that NQ are the Cowboys. It's Australia we call them Stockmen, Ringers, Jackaroos.
But it's NQ, so I don't know why they didn't just go with Bulls.
Crocodiles was initially chosen as a trial name but one of the local Rugby Union rep teams kicked up a stink about it because their teams utilise the same nickname so it was dropped. Marty Bella went up for a guest speaking appearance and wore a bid team shirt with crocs on it and got pictured for the Tvl Bully and the Union fruitcakes carried on about it.From 82 onwards, you can look a trend of what NFL teams were doing well (either winning Superbowls or making them) and their names were then taken by the new NSWRL/ARL/NRL teams.
All these teams appropriated there names from the NFL in some way (whether they had relevant to the region or area)
- Steelers
-Raiders
-Giants
-Broncos
-Cowboys
Funnily enough the Dolphins existed as a name well before I believe the NFL was even commonly known about in Australia, so I suggest there name was the most organic of the lot.
For mine the NQ Cowboys should be been the NQ Crocodiles (and no the Townsville NBL side wasn't called the Crocodiles in 1995, they were the Suns at this time)
