In order to expand to Perth, the NRL has to deal with the WAFC, who control the sports media over there in Western Australia

In the sports bulletins on the daily news in WA it is presumed that AFL IS Sport. And the presumption that everyone knows who the Eagles and the Dockers are

There is a rectangular stadium in Perth now where the Western Force and Perth Glory play out of, the Force have a strong backing because there's a fair Saffer contingent in WA. Soccer because there was a strong state league

The WARL has to prove it has a niche in Perth for League in its sporting market, and also prove it is sustainable. Because Perth has a similar sporting culture to Melbourne

Mind you, both major sporting codes are doing it wrong with costly franchises on the Gold Coast and the AFL with the GWS Giants

I'd say Adelaide has a similar sporting culture to Melbourne rather than Perth in which all 4 football codes have had a presence for many decades.

A few ignorant statments in this one!

1. The WA media will support sports that have a team based in Perth. Prior tot he Force there was zero RU coverage except Wallabies games, now they have a "rugby" (sic) pull out and have full page S15 coverage in the West and Sunday Times. When the Reds were in the Winfield cup they employed dedicated RL writers!

2. The WARL has proved as much as it can how sustainable a NRL team will be in Perth. We get 15-20k crowds to games, we have a 7 figure sponsor lined up, we have been able to attract enough coprortae support to cover the costs of running a SG ball team and elite academy etc. I am not surw what more they can do?

3. There is a massive contingent of East coast Australian, Kiwis and northern poms living in Perth now. They dwarf the saffers and ensure a strong membership base for any future NRL club here

4. We have seen 13 o our Sg ball team get signed up by NRL clubs to Toyota cup. Many other WA jnrs have gone on to NSW and Q'land cup. With very neagre resources, very little profile and not a lot of help from the ARL we are producing players. This will go through the roof with a Perth NRL team for kids to aspire to playing for

5. The redevelopment of nib was partly due to Gallop promising the WA govt a NRL team. Having three tenants made spending $125mill of tax payers money a viable thing to do and the ground was redeveloped with NRL requirements in mind. There is a dressing room with the Pirates name on it waiting for a team!

6. The WC Pirates will be the third biggest club in WA behind Eagles and Dockers. WA will always be an AFL state but there is a big place for NRL here.

Whilst, Western Suburbs Magpie supporters hold out hope that one day the club will return as its own entity to NRL, I doubt it; although there are a few possiblities that it could happen.

1: The Wests Tigers folds due to Balmain's finances and Maggies are granted the licence based at Campbelltown. Given the concern the NRL has of losing part of Western Sydney, it is possible.

2: The Wests Tigers folds due to Balmain's finances and Maggies (as the West Magpies) are granted the licence based at Campbelltown and Perth. 6 home games in Campbelltown and 6 home games in Perth. This could be a more cost effective case then establishing a new club in Perth; if after a number of years the market indicates that Perth is a goer then the Maggies return to Campbelltown full time and a new club is established (Pirates).

Remember, the West is already in the name. Only an idea; that might get Perth games from, say, 2014.

No thanks.
WA will not dictate to the NRL. You will get as much of a presence as the NRL decides is best for the NRL. If a partial relocation or a full relocation is what the NRL decides WA gets that is what WA gets and WA will appreciate it.

BunniesGimp and MagpiesNever, you will be glad to hear that the Wests Magpies part of the JV have confirmed the future of the Wests Tigers...

But even if Wests were to gain a greater representation on the board due to their stronger financial position, Fairfax Media has been told Magpies officials have agreed the nickname of the NRL franchise will remain as the Tigers.

While both clubs were founded in 1908, Wests Tigers chairman Mike Bailey said there were some fans who have only ever supported the joint venture.
''We have always been careful on both sides to ensure that we retain that contact with our grassroots clubs but at the same time we know that time is marching on and that there is a lot of allegiance these days to Wests Tigers and not the foundation clubs,'' he said. ''It is a matter of trying to look after all of the various interests that we have and I think we have done a pretty reasonable job on that front for what is now 14 seasons.
''We will continue to have respect for that but at the same time if we need to make changes it is up to us as a board to consider that.''
Bailey said the Tigers hoped to meet further with Smith and Grant in coming weeks to discuss a variety of matters, including the structure of the joint venture.

The nickname. Does nothing to dispute the possibility of a Magpies controlled Tigers moving to Perth.

The possbillity of any move to Perth has only been mentioned by internet trolls such as yourself...

It wont happen as it wouldnt benefit any party - The Wests Tigers, The Wests Magpies, the NRL or WA Rugby League...

:D

More chance of Holmes a Court returning to his home city with Sth's in tow. There is already a Western Rabbitohs membership, 8 games in perth and 4 in Sydney sounds about right.

I agree that there is more chance of Souths moving to Perth...

I might start a rumour about it on twitter...

It was only an idea, outside of the square, if Balmain went totally belly up and Wests needed to put forward a case to retain the NRL licence.

Personally, I don't give a shit about WA league - they dogged in the SL/ARL war and got their just desert as a result of jumping the fence.

The team name could be changed though

The "West Coast" tag has already been taken

What's wrong with bringing back the name The Western Reds anyway?

Great to see WA Jnr and former WA Reds SG Ball captain Eddie Proudler feature in the young guns section. Hopefully he will make first grade just in time to join the Pirates!
