Hardly surprising.

The 2nd Brisbane team was completely ignored by the News LTD-dominated (monopoly at the time in Brisbane) press from 96 onwards.

The more important thing for me is that you ignore the whole numbers.

In 1997 they out did illawarra, st george, penrith, south queensland, and south sydney. They were also just behind the dogs. Yep those sure are crappy figures!

I don't agree with your assessment of the tv ratings. I am assuming you are referring to recent figures (i doubt we have access to much data from as far back as 95).

These games do not involve a team in perth, are poorly advertised and have massive droughts between games. Despite this they still rate as well as some of the usual tripe nine dishes up.

How can you expect people in Perth to tune into league when they don't have a team and only get a couple of games a year shown at a decent time? Good luck even knowing when there is a game on in Perth on tv at the moment.

So when the rumours of Super League and the reunification of the two side and the likelihood the Reds would be culled - their crowds dropped off???

Same thing happened to the 2nd BRISBANE Team, The Adelaide TEam, and others!!!

I already said that I accepted that Super League was the major reason for the drop off.

But it was a drop off and it there was no 16k average, ever for a Perth/WA team as was said in the offending article..

And you can't use recent ratings to throw in their face. They don't receive regular coverage in Perth so how can they possibly build any sort of viewer base?

The ratings are relevant, they're awful. I have no doubt either that they'll improve markedly when the Reds play again but that doesn't change the fact that the ratings for Rugby League in Perth have been woeful over the past 5 or so years.

There's a lot of confidence in the Reds hitting the ground running from people here in here, including myself, but what that confidence is based on escapes me...

Yeah, no they didn't.

The drop off occurred and they never averaged 16k, facts. But bare facts don't always tell the whole story and I've said twice that I accept that Super League was the reason.

Where did I say they were crappy compared to other teams, ARL or Super League?

Thanks, you saved me a job! We had Sunday afternoon NRL for 4 weeks, then it went back to midnight, hardly time to build any viewers! Compared to what Sydney gets for AFL at a decent time slot, even the 25-40k wasn't bad in the circumstances! Give us a team and regular and decent FTA coverage and we'll add 2million to the viewing figures over the course of a season.

Will the TV rights holder want to put them on at 7.30pm Friday for 60k a week or is that 60k based on the Friday 7.30 slot?

You can't say "I understand that most of that can be attributed to Super League though", and then follow that up in a subsequent post with "A 13k average to an 8k average is quite a drop-off, don't you think?"

Either crowds from the orginal Western Reds at the height of the super league war are relevant, or they are not. you can't have it both ways.

And i still can't see how the ratings could have been expected to be anything other than awful with erratic non-regular coverage at the best of times.

good to see they had a rise of 500 people per game from 96 to 97 though. one can only wonder where they would be now if we had of stuck to them, who knows, they could have won a number of premierships, averaged crowds above 20k, produced countless juniors, added tens of millions to our last tv deal, developed a rivallry with the storm which could of eventually led to a wa v vic origin game, introduced hundreds of thousands of new fans to rugby league. but no, we did the typical rugby league thing and put them in the too hard basket and pulled out. our sport could be so much bigger if we had some vision!

ps our confidence is based on 5 years of hard work by the WARL to get us to this point. Will it be easy? no. will it be an instant success? not likely. will it be worth it in the long run? you better believe it!

Based on viewing figures for GF and SOO , which are the only time we get games at a decent times. These are usually up around the 100k.

Actually 60k isn't bad for Perth! Eagles games only rate around the 100k mark. In Perth 9 has the lowest viewing market share, anything they can get to boost their numbers would be a good thing for them (if 9 get the next rights of course). Current Sunday afternoon viewing is sub 20k.

Add 2million on to the end of season media hype figures about who is the most watched sport in the country and we suddeny are a long way ahead of AFl, perception = reality = $'s.

Also don't forget that's based on population, 60k in Perth is the equivalent of something like 300k in Sydney.

I like the possibilities of the marketing value in the name wa reds. The initials w.a.r. is sweet. When opposing teams play in Perth they could advertise the game like the Bears @ W.A.R. or WAR Games or simply painting the town Red.

I also like the the red & gold color scheme for a home jersey and maybe a silver/ red for the away colours?

yeh good idea, The WAR ZONE has a ring to it! We will also be looking at a range of nifty red camo merchandise for the Red Army Supporters group!

I am looking far a good cartoon drawer if anyone knows one? We need a logo and some pics for the website, bumper stickers etc.

We have a group of fans coming together in January to get the Red Army mobilised so keep your eyes peeled for devleopments in the New Year!
