True but then in reality that is the same for majority of clubs. Advantage we have is we do have a major city with major corporate companies based here who are desperate to get their company in front of customers or potential staff in NSW and Q'land. No better vehicle than the NRL to achieve that goal for companies.

There will be no decision on expansion until the TV deal is signed and the IC knows how much money it has in the bank and if the TV deal is more valuable with two new teams. In theory the increase in internet rights alone could comfortably pay for a Perth team outright! We may need a bit of a top up though if what I have heard comes to fruition we will be able to stand on our own two feet from day one.

So curious, given that there is only a few months before bids have to be submitted (correct me if I am wrong), how is the sponsorship side of the Reds bid going? Any major players getting behind the bid?

There's about 30 companies linked to the bid and SG Ball side. The biggest contributor at the moment is Cash Convertors who have put close to $400k into the SG Ball and bid so far. Harvey Norman are also supporting and the WARL are working with the State Govt at the moment to get some financial backing for the bid. They produced a report that showed having an NRL team in perth would be worth $20mill a year to the WA economy and profile of the State.

Thanks heaps Perth Reds, I think some top up is important. I really want to league to go back to Perth, but it needs to be done right.

Perth can bring alot to the game, but most important it offers a new area and new pathway to bring talent through to the NRL. If we continue to expand we'll need to start drawing players from new area's and NSW and Qld aren't lacking in pathways.

I don't see any point in expanding anywhere else unless Perth are the 1st team in, (if done right).

Haha, there is no where else suitable to play in perth, I hope they didn't pay the guy much to write that report! $120k is very very expensive, I am pretty sure that is more than it really costs, they only get 7-8k fans so they would hardly be covering that cost!

If we avg 15k, even at that price, we still have a profit of around $3mill+ from a seasons gate takings + Corporate spending + food and drink sales.

Apple I really love these two. No grey pls, grey always sux on nearly anything, it's grey ffs.

But Apple can you maybe put a gold trim on the end of the sleeve of the "All Red" jersey please? I think it just needs it to finish it off properly. Thanks in advance.

Yes they are awesome designs though. I could never understand why no other team has picked these colours. They have always been a no brainer to me. Especially when you think of all the similar blue jerseys that are around.

Thats wrong. The TV deal negotiations will start shortly after the ARLC takes over running the game in (hopefully sometime around) April, and will take about 6 months or so to complete.

The calls for bids for expansion will come in June, and the potential expansion bids will play a role in the TV rights negotiations. This will be a big boost for the Ipswich, Perth and Brisbane bids because of their value to TV.

The TV rights negotiations will be wrapped up towards the end of the year, shortly before the decission on expansion is made, probably in December 2011 or January 2012.

This time-frame is why its actually more likely that expansion will occur in 2014 rather than 2013.

The NRL moved it forward so it would be in direct competition with the AFL one.

I know for a fact that it has started.

You said its in "direct competition with the AFL"....

What do you mean by this exactly?

Here is my tip which I suggest is just as informed as yours...

The NRL TV deal wont be finalised this year...

Currently both the AFL and NRL television deals are being negotiated. The AFL is at a far more advance staged in the negotiations. The AFL deal will be decided first.

No way they are going to announce expansion before they have a good idea what the next TV deal is worth. Could you imagine the uproar from the existingclubs if they announce expansion and then the TV deal is hardly worth much more than the current one? The expansion and where to will be a major consideration in the TV negotiations.
Timeline:
April/May IC in place
May-Sep Tv deal negotiations
Sep announcement of expansion and call for bids
Nov new teams announced to start 2014

If the TV deal is for 9 games a week rather than 8, it will obviously bring in more money...

I also suspect that where the new teams are coming from will have an impact on the amount of TV money available...

There will be a call for expansion bids before the TV rights are finalised...

If they dont get enough money out of the TV deal then they will probably shelve expansion plans but this appears unlikely...

Yeah your timeline is wrong Red. calls for expansion bids will be made in June/July, and they will be a concideration during the TV rights negotiations, which may be finalised before the end of the year, maybe March next year at latest.

A final decision on expansion will come before the end of this year, before the TV deal is finalised. I think they will expand in 2014, not 2013 though. 1 year lead in isn't very good for contract negotiations for winning bids, and the NRL may want to give the current clubs 2013 on the new bigger TV deal money to stabilise the comp a bit.
