June/July was muted last year when the IC was due to be in place for Nov1st. Interestingly Gallop or anyone at the NRL has made no noises about when a decision on expansion will be made in the last few months. He has said mid year but as the IC and TV negotiations get pushed further back that will also be heading in the same direction I feel. At the moment it is all speculation as the NRL are not committing to anything, or at least not making anything public.

Why would the NRL want to restrict the total amount of income that will be coming in off the new TV deal for 18 teams by only playing 16 teams in the first year of the contract?

It will lower the overall contract and we won't get that much more in the first year of that deal anyway.

2 reasons
1. Would give the expansion clubs a longer lead in time to recruit staff and players
2. Would give the exisitng clubs and IC a cash boost for the first year ie if they avg the deal out over the 5 years but split the first year by 16 not 18 then it gives existing clubs a one off cash bonus.

Still think 2013 is most likely depending on when the decisions happen.

I think what he means is that the first year will be intentionally lower due to the fact that the comp is still consisting of 16 teams, not 18. This would mean the contract would be worth less.

Why rush into something? If it means the winning bids are in a much stronger position (given more time to setup, and secure the players/sponsorship etc they need), then the short term loss, will be more than made up by the fact that we have much stronger new teams introduced to the competition, which in turn should lead to an even bigger increase to the round of TV rights afterwards.

Why put something off when there is two very strong bids ready to join by 2013 that will be 2 of the strongest clubs in the game.

Maybe you get a much better TV deal over the full five or six years by delaying and providing two teams that television networks are willing to pay significantly more for but which won't be the ready until year two of the deal.

Why jump the gun when there may be even stronger bids. It's not like CC and Perth are going to dissapear if they don't get the nod in 2013. It's only you saying they will 2 of the strongest in the game. I do think that CC looking at the history of similar regional teams, will have similar problems. I do not think they will be one of the strongest in the League, at best around the middle, at worst, well lets not go there.

Why does the NRL have to wait for bids to get their act together, it's been known for quite some time the NRL would look at expansion mid this year. If they haven't got their act together by now f*ck them. We won't wait around, particularly when we currently have two strong teams.

It should the 2 strongest when the NRL decides to expand, not wait around and hope their are stronger clubs. There is currently two bid that meet criteria, thats all the NRL needs to know to expand. Other areas miss out? should have got their act to together then.

Also unlike many Bears fans, i think if the CC don't get in they will walk away. There is only so many times you can reject something before that something just stops trying. The thing feels unimportant and not needed. That just leaves one more option for the area, move on in a different direction that does want you.

Union? Soccer? AFL? doesn't matter, whatever shows an interest.

I'm sure your opinion goes along way in the decision making

As a Bears fan, I am fearful about what would happen if rejected this time. It would be difficult to expect the financiers to stump up funds again in advance for another bid, and what about Flo and Daisy? They are critical to any CC Bears bid, but they can't be expected to hang around forever - Daisy will make a top NRL coach, and he's about to enter his prime coaching years.

And as for fans, the following emotions are how most Bears feel towards the NRL - betrayed, disillusioned, frustrated, simmering anger. On the Coast it wouldn't be quite as strong, but they've been stuffed around almost as much and the locals, being from a regional area, have little faith in the NRL due to its 'city-centric' perception. Most view this bid as the last chance for the games administrators to redeem itself. That's not arrogance or a threat, just the way Bears feel.

Reward them and they'll come back to the NRL fold in droves, reject them and enough will walk away in disgust to mean any future bid I believe will be significantly weaker.

Memberships sold expire in 2012 at the latest. How can you ask people to rejoin as financial members of the CC Bears in 2013 if they have no concrete timetable for entry? The Bears need a concrete answer on their future by mid 2012 at the latest.

That is interesting, didn't the AFL sign a deal with Virgin that prevented them dealing any other clubs? They wanted the same from QANTAS and they told the AFL to get stuffed.

Since the Reds aren't techincally a club yet maybe it is there way of getting around that deal. In any case that is more great news.

An hopefully the first of many wins for the boys
