Any evidence to suggest this is the case.

I think it's the same evidence that suggests that the ARLC are going to call for bids from 2 cities and not look at all bids.

That evidence is personal assumption.

I'm happy to be proven incorrect if Goddo has some evidence of what he's claiming.

One thing I know for sure is the NRL/ARLC have assured the CC Bears bid team that expansion WILL NOT be based on geography, but rather the quality of the individual bid.

Nothing in the public domain as yet. Theres more to what I'm saying than "personal assumption" though.

You can choose to accept what I've said or ignore it. They are looking at only 2 locations for expansion, with a third as a fall back position.

So wait a minute here.. when beowulf and myself say that there's more to a story than meets the eye and a lot of relevant information has yet to reach the "public domain", you openly ridicule us.

Yet here you are, stating that what you're saying isn't based on assumptions and that there is more than meets the eye to your statements. I find that incredibly rich mate. Especially when our sources are the bid team of the CCBears themselves and your sources are well.. only you know who apparently..

Every bid is going to be criticized at some capacity and like I've said all along, what's reported in the media and what's happening behind closed doors are two different things. You posted before about how much the WARL has spent on the overall landscape + bid in the Reds and that's great, good vision and strong believes in the code but at the same time you guys aren't the only ones. If you guys tick all the boxes presumably then so do we... twice over.

Not saying bears don't, I am saying reds do, as far as I can see. Gallop and co have been directly mentioning one heartland one expansion for a number of years. Unless the arlc are ultra conservative I have seen nothing to suggest this preference has changed.

Introducing another nsw and q'land team will make the game appear even more marginalized if they try to spruick that as "expansion". I am more concerned by a possible last minute Wellington bid than by Brisbane or cc.

Well thankfully nothing that I choose to accept or ignore makes any difference as to expansion so effectively I don't have to do either.

But I take you at your word and if your proven to be right I'll publicly acknowledge it. Obviously you'll do the same if your proven to be wrong?

League star supports Perth inclusion

NORTH Queensland co-captain Johnathan Thurston has a firm belief on where the NRL must expand almost 3500km away from his Townsville club on the other side of the country.
One of the game's marquee players says he purely has the best interests of fans at heart when he nominates Perth as the prime spot for NRL expansion.
"With the two-hour time difference there, you could have back-to-back live TV games on Friday nights," Thurston said.
"If I was the NRL boss for a day, I would expand in Perth. It needs to be on the radar.
"To be a national sport, I certainly think we need to have a team in Perth. Some of the club bosses are questioning if it is really viable to expand but that is what we have got a commission for, to work out what is in the best interests of the game."

Sure. It will be all out in the open in about 3 months when TV rights are wrapped up.

About time, when you think the momentum for expansion and the bids starting work happened early 2010 it has been a long time coming to a decision!

I just hope the ARLC don't postpone it due to the mismanagement of existing clubs. Hopefully the extra game a week and the two new areas value in terms of new viewers etc will make it a must do scenario to get the big TV $'s.

If it is 2015 or beyond I hope the ARLC and WARL sit down together and work out a properly funded development plan for the game here in the interim, especially at Jnr level. For a couple of million $'s investment we could see the WARL club numbers grow and see a lot more kids playing the game.

interesting the way we think the expansion is going to go, against the AFL method which seems to me to be about having a local derby in each state. GC Vs Bris, GWS Vs Swans, Freo Vs West Coast, Crows Vs Port.
I guess complicated by the strength of RL in Qld which demands > 2 teams, plus NZ, which i guess atm is the derby team for Melbourne, but which really should have another club.

Given that there is only 1 large regional city in WA, SA & VIC (Geelong) whereas in NSW, QLD & ACT there are 6 (Canberra, Wollongong, Gosford, Newcastle, Gold Coast, Townsville) it kind of makes sense.

The AFL is now played in 7 cities after expansion to 18 teams.

The NRL is currently played in 9 cities after expansion to 18 teams could be played in anywhere from 10 to 11 cities and after that with 20 clubs around 13 cities having the largest geographical reach of any major comp in Australasia.

It is unlikely that the NRL will ever have more than 1 team in Perth or Adelaide. I can see a time however far down the track when Melbourne has a second team.

So in terms of direct traditional 'derbies' you'd have in the long term:

WA/SA (Perth v Adelaide) - 2 games a season
Melbourne (2 Melbourne teams) - 2 games a season
NSW Regional Derbies (Canberra, Wollongong, Gosford, Newcastle) - 12 games a season
Western Sydney Derbies - 12 games a season
Eastern Sydney Derbies - 12 games a season
Brisbane Derbies - 2 games a season
QLD Derbies - anywhere from 12 to 30 games a season
NZ Derbies (Auckland, Wellington, South Island) - 6 games a season

Not counting other rivalry matches not based on geographic loyalties.

Could you imagine having 30 pure QLD derby games a year? It'd be like bringing the QRL back.

AFL are 20-30 years ahead of us on expansion. Unfortunately SL saw to it that our expansion out of NSWRL with a token Q'land club to a proper national competition was set back that long. AFL got a free run in moving from the VRL to a national comp and have done so with some very large amounts of development investment.

We are playing catch up and it will take a few decades to do so but eventually we will be bigger and better as we have NZ plus PNG and our game hosts clubs in regional cities.

We need to concentrate on the gaps in the map and NZ/PNG imo to work on over the next 2-3 decades.

in some ways yes :(

but in some ways there are still many major cities the afl have little to no presence of a profesisonal team - Townsville, Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra, etc

No doubt the AFL will try and force an AFL teams in North Qld and Canberra at some point. If they do they will struggle.

Doubt they will, the returns compared to investment are not great enough. Their model of partnering clubs with smaller regional areas will become more prominent though.

Manly have backed down to fan pressure to pull the plug on the Melbourne game in Perth. They are looking at the possibility of tbringing their Rd21 game against the Warriors here though.

it is understood Perry and the club's management team still planned to capitalise on the groundwork and the many hours they had invested in trying to stage the Storm game in Western Australia.
It is understood Manly had formulated a draft plan to transfer their round-21 home match against the Warriors in Perth.
The game would attract a parochial Kiwi crowd based on the number of expats working in Western Australia's mining and hospitality industries.

No news on if the October Test will played in Perth yet.

Roy just stated on the Offsiders that the TV deal will require a second Brisbane Team. The networks will demmand it and it makes sense.

Lock in Perth and Brisbane.
