Crazy not using the name Perth IMO.

None of the Afl teams use it , but two other football teams already use west or western in their name.

Also pirates sucks , Reds is much better.

Not really, people in WA strongly identify with being from the West Coast. Just calling them Perth may limit there appeal across the state and for West Australians inter-state.

I guess these were their options

- retain the Perth Reds name because it is an established brand and "Perth" is only used by the Glory

- establish completely new brand which appeals to all of WA, which means "Western" "West Coast" "Western Australia". I guess the brand was picked from there.

What a crap name. What do pirates have to do with Perth? I'm sick of team names that have nothing to with the area they are representing. Why copy "West Coast" from AFL too. So dumb.

Benny Elias and the other bid can use the Perth Reds now,

Well, I'm okay with the name, not sure about the logo however. I showed my wife, and she wasn't impressed either (she referred to them as "the pirates of men's pants"). The name pirates makes me think of the hunter pirates, and I think they should have stayed with something more WA.

80% of the entire state live in Perth. That argument makes no sense to me.

using the Perth name differentiates them from their major competitors.

said it in the other thread, but I think this is really good. i like the Pirates as a team name in general, and the marketing opportunities are vast. even like the switch to West Coast from Perth... flows better with the Pirates name. Perth Pirates sounds stupid.
