Lol @ perth red having to change his name.

Do I like "pirates"? I actually do. It's not well known in australian sport *cough*brisbane bombers*cough*. For me, "Pirates" works.

What I don't like is the "West Coast" bit. To the ignorant it will look like the Eagles are starting a NRL club. The West Coast Eagles are by far the biggest thing in WA sport and one of the biggest clubs overall in Australia. It is beyond stupid to use the same name as them when trying to create a new niche in Perth.

I reckon they're aiming to get a significant number of Eagles fans to adopt the Pirates as their second team.

"Perth" is not taken by a major sport. "Perth Pirates" would have been perfect.

Most people in WA either could not give a f**k or know who the Hunter Pirates are.

As I said before I reckon its a great choice, will be a really strong brand 20 years from now I reckon.

I guess these were their options

- retain the Perth Reds name because it is an established brand and "Perth" is only used by the Glory

- establish completely new brand which appeals to all of WA, which means "Western" "West Coast" "Western Australia". I guess the brand was picked from there.

Only south Australia has a larger % of people that live in the capital city. 80% of WA residents come from Perth.

Meaning if they play out of Perth , live out of Perth and train in Perth is highly likely more than 80% of their fans will come from Perth.

That and they distinguish themselves better from their major rivals.

80% of the entire state live in Perth. That argument makes no sense to me.

using the Perth name differentiates them from their major competitors.

Most of the pop. do live there but alot less are actually from there. Having spent a fair bit of time in WA recently I can tell you they really identify with the word "west".

I know, I personally recon they should have gone with Perth Reds. But thats the logic behind a "WA wide" name. Appeals to everyone, alienates no one.

But being generic makes it dull. And picking the name of a teen alcopop...

But its not bad. Its no Brisbane Bombers :)lol:)

Some of my thoughts from the expansion board

Like the name lover the logo & colours.

Should really appeal to the Somalian community as well.

Not really, people in WA strongly identify with being from the West Coast. Just calling them Perth may limit there appeal across the state and for West Australians inter-state.

West Coast Pirates?

Would have preferred the Reds to be in there somewhere. I'm sure the new name will grow on me eventually

We?ll have our own state-of-the art training facilities and clubhouse and having won the SG Ball competition, we?ll have our sights set on winning our first NRL Grand Final and be poised to play in the State of Origin.

What the?

I had a giggle as well.

Either we've misinterpreted it, or they were passing around a massive spliff while they were typing that shit up.
