Hahaha Gazf! Nice.

Like the Pirates over the Reds. Hard to have Reds in NRL whilst QLD have Reds in Rugby.

Exactly.

Another plus with using the Pirates name is that it doesn't limit the colours of the club

The Qld Reds (Super Rugby), Adelaide United Reds (A-League), even the Salford City Reds in Superleague all have predominantly red home jerseys.

The West Coast Pirates could have a home jersey that's predominantly NOT red - is that a mustard yellow I see in the logo?

Makes sense if the Pirates have a home jersey that's mostly mustard yellow, with black & red trim.. reasonably close to WA state colours.

Has their ever been Pirates in Western Australia?

I don't mind the name and the logo. But their is not much history in the name.

So of the expansion clubs from the last 30 years that still exist, we have:
1. Canberra RAIDERS
2. Brisbane BRONCOS
3. New Zealand WARRIORS
4. North Queensland COWBOYS
5. Melbourne STORM
6. Gold Coast TITANS

That is 4 humanoids, 1 animal and 1 meteorological event. If we add the Pirates to the humanoids, it's getting a bit too much. Bring back the animal names, I say!!

William Dampier was a Pirate who landed in Western Australia, that's the only pirate I could think of off the top of my head. But i'm sure there's more, don't know much about the history of the west coast so I think the name is a s appropriate as any other.

The Pirates thing is a bit foreign. Imagine someone asking you "who's playing tonight?" "oh the Broncos and the Pirates". Just seems odd. Hopefully West Coast catches on as a nickname.

Love the logo. But West Coast Buccaneers would of been much better if they wanted this direction.

Forgetting the Knights. Another one to the humanoid/violent people.

I dont see whats wrong with Perth though, its not like Newcastle isolated the people in the Hunter Valley, and I'm sure there are plenty of Broncos fans in QLD outside of Brisbane. Same as there would be Raiders fans in Queanbeyan.

I thought if they had to change the name they would have done something unique and related to the mining industry WA has built itself on. Although i guess its all about marketing these days.
