I wonder if the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NFL being the same colours in the logo had anything to do with the decision? Although they are just Black/White/Yellow traditionally.

EDIT: Just Realised the Hunter Pirates were black/gold/red too. Must be a pirate thing.

The MLB not NFL and they are one of the most unsuccessful, degenerate and laughable sporting franchise in the US. Think of Souths multiplied by the Hunter Mariners, squared by 1999 Wests.

So of the expansion clubs from the last 30 years that still exist, we have:
1. Canberra RAIDERS
2. Brisbane BRONCOS
3. New Zealand WARRIORS
4. North Queensland COWBOYS
5. Melbourne STORM
6. Gold Coast TITANS

That is 4 humanoids, 1 animal and 1 meteorological event. If we add the Pirates to the humanoids, it's getting a bit too much. Bring back the animal names, I say!!

Bunch of fuggin awful names and this only adds to it.

They went from a uniquely Aussie name to an AFL ripoff + bland americanised rubbish Gold Coast reject name.

That said, I'm sure kids will love it and they are far more important to a new club than any respect to tradition or history I suppose.

Don't mind the name or logo.

They totally need to have a giant pirate ship in the grandstands that fires cannons every time a try is scored, ala Tampa Bay Buccanneers.

How many have been stolen from American sports teams?
Pretty sure pirates is another.

The pirate ship at Raymond James Stadium

One of the most recognizable features of the stadium is a 103-foot (31 m), 43–ton steel-and-concrete replica pirate ship, which fires soft-rubber footballs and confetti each time that the Bucs score points or enter the other team's red zone. The cannon fires once for each point scored. In addition, when the Buccaneers enter their opponent's red zone, stadium hosts hoist teamflags around the perimeter of the upper deck. During various times throughout the game, the song "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" is played on the stadium public address system (taken fromPirates of the Caribbean), which signals patrons onboard the ship to throw beads, t–shirts, and other free prizes to the people below. The segment is also known as a "Mini Gasparilla" to most fans. An animated parrot sits on the stern of the pirate ship. Controlled by radio and remote control, the parrot picks fans out of the crowd and talks to those passing by.

That is at the Raymond James Stadium in the US. The pirates totally need to do something similar

Woops, my bad. Was just talking to someone about the Steelers haha. Bad mistake to make.

I quiet like it, they couldn't use the reds IMO

Already failed and two other teams use it

Pirates is catchy and most importantly I think the kids will love it

Don't about 'west coast' though...you'd imagine some Fremantle fans might have trouble supporting them on that basis alone

What a crap name. What do pirates have to do with Perth? I'm sick of team names that have nothing to with the area they are representing. Why copy "West Coast" from AFL too. So dumb.

Benny Elias and the other bid can use the Perth Reds now,

Has their ever been Pirates in Western Australia?

I don't mind the name and the logo. But their is not much history in the name.

William Dampier was a Pirate who landed in Western Australia, that's the only pirate I could think of off the top of my head. But i'm sure there's more, don't know much about the history of the west coast so I think the name is a s appropriate as any other.

The Batavia Mutiny didn't involve Pirates but the conduct was the same, rape, torture, murder, Shit wreck with treasures.

Perth also has so many tough guys sporting sleeve tattoos that you could mistake yourself for being in a Spandau Ballet / Bow Wow Wow clip.

Like all the Knights in Newcastle, Tigers in Balmain, Panthers in Penrith or Titans on the GC aye?

There is an urban legend all the way from Bathurst to Penrith and off to Camden that there is a family of Panthers on the loose that escaped from a travelling circus back in the day.

Heard it called the Lithgow Panther, Bathurst Panther and Penrith Panther. I always assumed this was where the name came from.

Well I'd assume so seeing that 1. the Carolina Panthers dont have the same recognition as the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Remember the Titans and Pitsburgh Steelers and 2. The Carolina Panthers didnt come about until 1993, 26 years after Penrith joined the Sydney Comp.

Looking back its funny how the Steelers and Raiders both won multiple superbowls in the five years leading up the the 1982 expansion. The Cowboys won multiple superbowls in the lead up to the 1995 expansion, and even the Broncos were a fairly dominant team in the AFC in the lead up to 1988.

And a Kangaroo Valley Panther as well.

I thought Penrith just took Panthers for the alliteration.
