Hi PR
Just back from a month in Kalgoorlie. I am amazed at the lack of acknowledgment of NRL - not only are there no clips in the commercial or ABC TV news but the scores aren’t even given. It’s as if the game doesn’t exist. In The West Australian you might see half a page of NRL news buried well inside the sports section. The game faces a struggle in the west but the gaining of a team may well be the catalyst. It’s hard to imagine that the media could continue to ignore the game if there is a local team.

WA is incredibly parochial. Nrl won’t get much coverage here until there is a WA team for them to cover. It’s seen as an east coast limited sport.

Glad you survived a month in Kal!

How many WA players in Qld cup & other NRL feeder comps?

Not sure on the numbers playing in the 18s & 20s but there is Kainoa Gudgeon at CQ Capras, Curtis Dansey-Smaller at Easts & Josh Rogers at Burleigh in Q Cup. Kurt De Luis is playing for Blacktown Workers in NSW Cup.

The Perth Lions?

The Reds, who were coached by Peter Mulholland, lured the likes of Brad Mackay, Mark Geyer, Matthew Rodwell and Mick Potter west to Perth and prepared for their introduction by signing more than 60 players to play in the local competition.

Among them were promising youngsters Matt Geyer and Wayne Evans, who played in the Reds Under 21s team coached by John Dorahy.

The Perth-based team won 11 of their 22 matches in 1995 – including eight at the WACA, where they averaged crowds of 13,390 – to finish 11th, one place behind the Warriors, who won 13 games in their first season.

Re-establishing a club in Perth would be an attraction for more English players to join the NRL, with 17-hour non-stop flights between Perth and London having begun last year.

The England squad was based in Perth during the 2017 World Cup and the players joked with coach Wayne Bennett about establishing an NRL team to play in the NRL.

"We should get an English team in the NRL to play out of Perth," South Sydney prop Thomas Burgess told NRL.com during a recent interview.

"All the English boys would be keen, they loved it in Perth during the World Cup. We always used to joke with Wayne, saying 'Wayne, if we get a team in Perth you coach it and we'll play in the NRL'."

That would be an excellent way to alienate 90% of a Perth teams potential support base.

Getting the top 5 or 6 British players in the squad wouldn’t hurt!
That's not what he is suggesting though is it...

He's suggesting "an English team in the NRL to play out of Perth", i.e. an English ethnic club, with English players (I suppose in his mind with the cream of the crop from the Super League, or even just the English national team), that whether through design or not, would appeal to the English demographic first and foremost, that would be based in Perth, and takes part in the NRL competition.

Whether or not you think that an English club, or rather a club based in England, in the NRL is a good idea or not (personally, I think it's more of a question of practicality then whether or not it'd be beneficial to the NRL), I think we can all agree that an English club based in Perth isn't what either the NRL or Perth wants or needs.

On another note, do we really want to go down the path of ethnic clubs!? I mean that always works out so well doesn't it!
