Nick Politis will probably pull a Mitchell Pearce testimonial out of his arse.

I doubt it. As I said up thread, last testimonial the Roosters had was for Luke Ricketson in 2002 and all that involved was a dinner at Randwick Racecourse.

The salary cap and also how it's monitored needs to be overhauled. There is no doubt that teams are breaking the rules. Maybe something like this could shine a light on the issue.

And the privilege is only extended to a very select few.
Ok Smith and Thurston are very good at football. That's not a criteria.
There are loads of players who have cleared 300 games, played lots of Origins and for Australia, been one club players.
None of them have or will be given the privilege to sell club products outside of their salary and have it go straight into their pocket.

If the NRL comes out and says all players can receive a % of personalised merchandise or 300 game players can have a testimonial match, fine. Probably a good thing. But as usual it's made up as they go for the benefit of whoever they feel like at the time, with the added bonus of the recipient being the head of the players union AND a recipient of previous cap rorting.

If you can't see what the problem is you're a f**king simpleton, basically.

Here's hoping it's a typical Rothfield nonsense story but it seems Peak Greenberg NRL tbh.
When Hindy released his book he was wearing a Parra jersey on the front cover , would make sense being one of the clubs greatest ever slatwarts.

Ummmm no that wasn't allowed and proceeds of the book counted against Parra's cap the next season even though he had retired.

And now the NRL going to allow rubbish like this, talk about rules for some and not for others.

The thing is the 3 players you speak of were assembled long before 2006 when the salary cap issue started. Back 2001 actually and I played with them.

I have no problem with the * . I've moved on.
The 'big 3' were retained using illegal payments that breached the salary cap. Cast your mind back to the 2006-2010 period. They were all getting big offers from other clubs and the Titans coming in to the comp as well, yet they mysteriously stayed in Melbourne while appearing to forego the extra money that was in reality sitting in a second filing cabinet. To say with absolute certainty that the Smith, Slater and Cronk would have stayed for less money is laughable.

Keep avoiding the point though.

I'm still laughing . . . tell me ol' mate, do you think Melbourne have been squeaky clean since the 'debacle' of '10

Loads of players? Who past and present has played over 300 nrl games, 20 origins and 20 Aus games? Seems like only a select few. Thurston on 299 and slater not far behind are entitled to be celebrated.

I don't give a s***. I don't care who these gimps are or what they've done. They're just players, not gods. They're not special. Well.. Smith is a sort of "special", but that's another matter. This is not a "celebration", it's payola.

Would you leave a job to do the same thing at another job for the same price?

I think players do accept a slightly lower price for staying with the same club. There has to be an incentive to move clubs.

But either way your bring up something that happened a decade ago to justify your reasoning. It's a completely different situation to back then.

This is about a trial game being monetized. So back on topic?

I don't really understand how this makes sense on any level? I'm guessing it won't happen though because there will be a huge outcry.

This.

It's a f**king stupid idea (unless all the profits go to a charity of the players choice). That's the only way I could support it.

...Tribute games are decided by the Nrl hierarchy and shouldn't be given out lightly...

There's a big problem, right there. Now were're talking about a caste system within the NRL. I'm not sure which outcome is the more disgusting... that the NRL and their media suckups will decide on their whim who gets this going forward, or whether this will be ONLY for Cammie and Thurston and nobody else. Which is a possibility, as the whole thing opens a can of worms.

Haha so it's ok for Jt but not smith? Your bias is ridiculous. Thurston had quite a few issues back in the day to remember. He's no angel.

Tribute games are decided by the Nrl hierarchy and shouldn't be given out lightly.

I have no problem accepting your opinions, I just believe that life long superstars, future immortals, 1 team players, nrl legends, can be entitled to a golden handshake. Everyone else will benefit from the game as well.

Gallen/Sbw makes money from fighting in the off season? What's the difference? Is that counted to the cap?

Haha. I genuinely don't think I've ever seen a point missed this badly in my entire 32 years on this Earth....

Common sense really, players who know how good they're going to be can make more money in the long run by accepting less in the short term . . . can't put a price on playing with players that make you look better, play better and subsequently attract more of the right kind of attention
