What a World Cup!

It still appears that fans of other football codes are having a job to cope with the success of the world cup. Imagine what they will be like come the 2017 world cup.

Yep :)

The silence has been deafening over here. The best I've read from a rugby union supporter is, "After the publicity of the Rugby League WC, they now have a break, typically good RL organising", lol, what? Innit. :)

How can they call something a sport when they can play 12 months of the year? Obviously darts, snooker + golf aren't sports.

sorry guys its not much of a world cup when u get the same final again just with a different result where it turned out to be a flogging

yeh the other teams are close (everyone outside of the top 3) but australia is so far above the rest its not funny and imo it was a crap team with a even worse coach yet we still manage to win wtfff

I think you should change your username to 'Phil Rothfield's Number 1 fan'. Honestly what an incredulous comment!

I just don't get some RL fans blinkered views and think developing the game is somehow unhealthy for the game and we should just give up on it????

The people posting the negative comments obviously have no interest in the international game so why they bother to post in the international section of the forum baffles me.

How is the current Kangaroos crap?

Slater, Inglis, Thurston and Smith are elite class and would vie for a start in any Kangaroos side.

Current team is as good as any in the last decade. Possibly the best in 20 years.

I would suggest that people posting negative comments on this thread are fans of other football codes and have seen the success of this world cup and know the next world cup will even be more successful and the word i use for them is fear. Rugby League is getting its act together on the international stage and i smell the fear from fans of the inferior codes.

I had a look back and, maybe I am wrong, but there are no more than three mildly critical posts from two members.

Who are these "fans of inferior codes" who are quaking in their shoes? It would be good if you could name them.

RL has had a successful and entertaining world cup.

Fundamental changes to school systems around the world need to occur if RL is really going to make an impact internationally.
It's a great code of football but is hampered by a non presence in critical areas such as most schools. For instance, even with it being the most popular code of choice in NSW and QLD it is still treated like a 3rd rate citizen in many private schools.

This lack of presence in education systems around the world is the real fundamental change needed to give RL the genuine growth it deserves. I agree that it is sport that can be readily taken up as it is very easy and attractive to watch but for significant inroads the scholastic sector is where RL really needs to increase its presence.

A code like RU has been propagated by having a stranglehold in many school systems around the world particularly the private schools. This presence gets this code favors from people in high places and influential positions. RL does not benefit from such relationships.

I'd like to think one day it might!

As a fan of the game first and foremost above any other crap I can honestly say it is a damn shame England did not win the WC because it would have had a massive effect on the game's standing worldwide. The funding for the game in England would have changed remarkably as a result cos let's face it, England loves a winner. Their football and Rugby teams are forever failing in big tournaments.

Yeah, but only when they're good enough. A truely dominant England team, one that is regularly capable of competing and beating the big three. Aus, NZ and Italy.

On the internet thing, the impact on some sponsors is evident

http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=get%20the%20label&geo=GB&cmpt=q

http://www.google.com/trends/explore#cat=0-13&q=godaddy&geo=GB&cmpt=q

The purported online searching for "rugby league world cup" compared to 2008 was approximately the double worldwide and surprisingly perhaps maybe four or fives times bigger in the UK, and principally in Wales:

http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=rugby%20league%20world%20cup&geo=GB-ENG%2C%20GB-WLS&cmpt=geo

Apparently the biggest searchers for the term "rugby league world cup" were new guineans this time round, and kiwis the last time around.

There is still much work to do however. The rugby world cup is about 10x more searched for than the league variant:

http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=rlwc, rugby league world cup, rwc, rugby world cup&cmpt=q

Ireland snag a sponsor

http://www.rli.ie/article/11662/gfrac-signs-up-as-rli

Speaking on the announcement RLI Director Richard Egan said; “The sponsorship we have received from G Frac comes directly from hosting a world cup game in Ireland where former players connected back with RLI and will prove to be a real boost for the student squad ahead of the upcoming fixtures. We would like to thank Chris for his support of RLI and we hope that this will be the beginning of an extended relationship between the two organisations.”

We need 16 teams in 2017 WC.
Purely to make the fixtures simplified. Yes it means potentially a big 3 nation will play in 3 lop sided games before the quarters, but that is normal in international sport.

So which 2 nations join the 14 from 2013?
Vanuatu, Canada, Jamaica, Lebanon, Serbia, Ukraine, Russia?
