NSW v Gt Britain 1954 game abandoned.
The referee due to excessive fighting
The referee, Aub Oxford I think his mame is
Aub Oxford holds a unique place in rugby league history — he’s the only referee to abandon a top-flight match in 106 years of the sport in this country. Back in 1954, in the days when men were men and you could get away with a bit of biff, the touring Great Britain side clashed with New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The match was played in between the second and third Test matches of the Australia-Great Britain series, which was tied at one-all. The Blues had selected a full-strength side, including a number of Test stars, but the Brits had other ideas and selected two front-rowers on the wings and a second-rower at fullback. Knuckle was the order of the day, with nearly every tackle containing a punch and after 60 minutes of unrestrained thuggery, Oxford decided he’d had enough. He walked off the field, leaving the brawling players behind him as the match was ruled a “no contest”. Oxford never refereed again. im blaming the poms:)

Interesting you mention a referee calling the game of because of players fighting but I found this one interesting from a French game where the referee called the game off because he was fighting:

Speaking of French and referees:

Anyone guess what record is still holding in the above picture?

That middle picture of Julien Rascagneres in the game between Manly and Illawarra was the Saturday game of Round 2 in 1983 a TV game.

There have also been other French referees in Australia's major competition.

In 1975 Francois Escande, took control of the TV match of the day, between Balmain and Easts in at Leichhardt Oval. He had a good game by reports.

He was in Australia for the 1975 World Championship tournament.

In 1977 Marcel Caillol who was here for the World Cup took control of South Sydney and North Sydney at Redfern Oval.

In 1982 the Hull KR v Bradford Round 1 Premiership Trophy game was abandoned after the Bradford captain became the 6th player sent off, as a result he took his players from the field and did not return.

Here are the notes from the Rugby League Project site:

https://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/...ston-rovers-vs-bradford-northern/summary.html

This match ended prematurely on 56' after Bradford Northern captain Jeff Grayshon ordered his players off the field. This was following his dismissal for throwing the ball at referee Robin Whitfield. His sendoff followed those of John Millington and Steve Hartley (Hull Kingston Rovers), Gary van Bellen, Dean Carroll and Ian Ellis (Bradford Northern), all in the first half. The referee subsequently awarded the win to Hull Kingston Rovers.
