Again, Civoniceva?

Why are people aiming to sign players with less than 2 seasons left to play?

The team isn't for life.

It's the five best players for next season.

I picked Civoneceva as he is the kind of bloke who will bring a lot more than pure footballing ability to a team. He's also arguably the best prop in the game at the moment, and probably will be next year as well ...

Two good years, having the younger guys champing at the bit to play with Petero. Probably worth one of your top 5 picks don't you think?

Yes, the old "looking to the future" chestnut. Playing 5 years into the future might be wise for 2013, but what about winning the current season?

We're talking players to build a team around, surely you'd look at the younger end of the spectrum?

In defence of those people picking Darren Lockyer, it depends on if this draft system was to remain in place forward or if its just a once off and the system reverts to the current.

If it reverts to current, why not pick Lockyer and have a good starting point for your team and then worry about finding a replacement from another club in 2 years.

If the draft stays in for ever and the only way to get players is by bringing in juniors then it may be best to find someone with a few more years left in them as a replacement may be a long way off.

Also, am I missing the point. Many people seem to be listing the 5 players they want to start a team with. Isn't this the first 5 players picked (meaning 1 each for 5 teams (or 16 teams if doing a full round). If it is one per team then this would be the best single player to build a team around.

If the draft system remains (therefore age is relevant) and it is 1 player per team, it would be hard to go past C. Smith at no. 1 IMO.

Like all those great players that the Panthers have signed over the last two years...

Due to the lack of quality halves and five eights going around, Johnathon Thurston and Scott Prince would be the the first players picked. Followed by a good five eight. The clubs would be looking at hookers and fullbacks. Lock fowards would probably be the last players picked.
On the contrary Lock should be considered early, I think there is a lack of quality locks in the NRL guys like BK, Clyde, Sonny Bill in the past. There are however plenty of fullbacks. I would pick a half or 5/8 first, then a hooker, then a lock and then probably either a good front row or backrow combination

Top 5

Johnathan Thurston
Cameron Smith
Dallas Johnson
Ben Hannant/Ben Creagh
Michael Weyman/Luke O'Donnell

Depending on your preference.

You would have to build you 1/6/7/9 combination first, and then look at getting the best front rower you can. The 1/6/7/9 is the key to the attack, while the front rower lays the platform.

1. Billy Slater
6. Johnathon Thurston
7. Scott Prince
9. Robbie Farah
10. Petero Civoniceva

With that ore of the team in place, i would then use them to help lure my backline of Hayne, Jennings, Inglis and Folau.

9. De Gois
10. Galloway

Bench = 2 front rowers and 2 backrowers who dont set the world on fire but dont make stupid errors and give away penalties.

Should fit in the salary cap
