3. Inglis
4. Civonaceva
5. Hayne

I'd love to squeeze Prince and Creagh into that list as well, but it's only a top five after all.

I favoured Hayne over Slater, but that's possibly a case of Eels favouritism. I managed to resist the urge to first pick Hindmarsh ... I'd have him in ANY team, but I don't think you'd have to priorities him as highly as the guys above.

Some of you have some very strange ideas of how a draft works. You can only pick who is available and if you pick one player at a time then you cannot be guaranteed that any player will be available in the second round. The key players will be the ballplayers. But depending on how it goes some clubs may want up front dominance and some may look to glaze the donut first (flashy outside backs).

And the whole thing wouldn't work unless all juniors were up for grabs too.

I don't believe there's a more influential player than Lockyer in the NRL. Sign him and you'd attract a lot of attention making it easier to sign other players.

If I could select a coach as well, Wayne Bennett would be my pick.

I thought we were picking what players would be first targetted by teams in a draft.... people are just picking 5 players they would like to build their club around....

Thurston is no. 1, whether you rate him or not. There is no real debating it either.

I honestly believe if you asked all the CEO's of each club who they'd take first Thurston and Cameron Smith would be the two most common answers to build a club around. Both are young and have done it all and will continue for a long time yet.

Set the spine up first 5 picks

If i had first pick, id take Thurtson 1st, then partner him with someone like Lockyer (who given his age wouldnt be all that attractive an option) in the 2nd round. If he wasnt there i'd take the best half/five eighth avalable that suited Thurston's game.

Then i'd go for a good, quality but young fullback. By the 3rd id expect Slater, Stewart, Gidley, Hunt etc might all be taken, if they are, i'd go for a Josh Dugan or Lachlan Coote.

Then i'd take a centre, hopefully one of quality rep centres was still around but if not again, i'd target the less established but future star like Idris.

Of the spine i'd leave hooker till last, because i think alot of good hookers would slide late because people would rush to get the gun backs. A player like Issac De Gois or Aaron Payne could be a handy 5ht rounder, but if not someone like Masada Iosefa or Travis Waddell would do the job, then pick a solid contributor as a back up in the late rounds.

Once you've got your 1, 3, 6, 7 and 9 worked out, the rest you fill in with what's best on the market, the front row, a good backrower and winger would be my immediate need in the 6-10. Then fill in the blanks with whats left.

Ill tell ya what, its not a bad idea, for a bit of fun, if we got 16 blokes, a rep from each club to do this over the course of a month or so. The draft order could be randomly generated.
