I LOVED Shutter Island. From the acting to the way Scorcese directed the pacing to build up the suspense...IMO a brilliant film.

Ditto Inception.

Leo is fast becoming my favourite actor - a really talented bloke who is making some brilliant films lately.

Inception was fantastic, but I always knew it would be given the cast and the director. Will have to see it again before I come to a complete conclusion though, it's one of those films that requires repeat viewings.

I saw Shutter Island on release day too and colour me unimpressed. I know I'm spoiling it but really when a film is 80% untrue I feel cheated. Can't fault Marty or the cast though, they did their best with the source material.

Away from that caught Ten Things I Hate About You and it's still reasonably enjoyable. Shallow plot but reasonably witty. Also caught Brick, a 2005 neo-noir film set at a high school. Fun film, although it did seem as if the cast was playing dress up.

Next I'm going to see Pan's Labyrinth for the first time, Dark Knight since it's release (and to go within 2 films of seeing Nolan's entire body of work) and the Departed.

re- shutter island - see the real thing - it was a dressed up copy of angel heart re- the feel, period, acting etc. - mickey rourke showed in ah why he is a far better actor than de cap ever will be - :)

i really loved Shutter Island.

trying not to spoil anything... but if you haven't seen it don't read further.

watching it a second time gives you a new level of appreciation for the movie. i saw it through twice on consecutive nights... and the real genius of it isn't necessarily the end, it's the double entendre that is on display right the way through. people acting "weird" suddenly seems rational for obvious reasons, etc. i thought it was rather excellent.

Movies like Shutter Island are out of Scorcese's depth IMO but I am curious to know which Scorcese films recetly released disappointed you?

i quite liked the departed - others i find less than inspiring - it may have something to do with the current preoccupation with leo - who has done little else of value since basketball diaries where he was very, very good

(maybe spoilers)

I actually enjoyed it more the second time. IMO, the twist was pretty obvious at about the halfway point of the movie (although some of the details weren't), and I guess that kind of lessened its impact. On second sitting, I was able to pick up on all the little things that I didn't pick up the first time.

I disagree. I was a big Decap hater (I loathed Titanic) until about 5 or 6 years ago, when he won me over with performances in films like the Aviator, Blood Diamond and the Departed. Ever since then pretty much every film he's been in is a winner.

we will have to agree to disagree - i didn't like either of the other movies you mentioned - the aviator was the usual academy "catch up before they retire awarding" which has so downgraded the value of oscar since about the 1980s - they lost me when gump won the award over two better movies in 1994

i read a list of the 1970s oscar winners to someone the other day and basically had to say nothing after doing so - the list speaks for itself - movies like the godfather had no choice but be awarded the gong - for those who are newish to movies, you could do worse than just get out those movies one long weekend - they are:-

1970 Patton
1971 The French Connection
1972 The Godfather
1973 The Sting
1974 The Godfather Part II
1975 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
1976 Rocky
1977 Annie Hall
1978 The Deer Hunter
1979 Kramer v Kramer

outstanding, in a word

For Cate Blanchette? All the other stuff they won at the Academy Awards was for stuff like best costume and art. I would agree with the sentiment if it were directed at The Departed, great film but it is a disgrace they gave Marty the award for a remake when he has films like Mean Streets, Taxi Driver & Raging Bull.

Which films do you think were better in 1994? A film called Quiz Show was nominated in 1994 but obviously did not win, I love that film.

sorry typo - they do happen - :) - meant the departed previously - re- 1994 - pulp fiction and shawshank redemption were both better movies - personally i preferred quiz show also to gump

The Godfather lost out to Cabaret in 1972 but Marlon Brando did win best actor.

No decade can compare to the quality of work that came out in the 1970's.
