The Godfather lost out to Cabaret in 1972 but Marlon Brando did win best actor.

No decade can compare to the quality of work that came out in the 1970's.

sorry - you are wrong this time re- 1972 - brando won best actor (but declined to accept it, as scott did for patton in 1970 also) - minnelli won best actress - the godfather was best picture - i agree the 1970s is the high point in us movie history

re- 1970s - i think one of the amazing things is to consider the quality of movies that didn't win it - like mean streets, five easy pieces, love story, a clockwork orange, cabaret, deliverance, the exorcist, chinatown, jaws, all the president's men, network, taxi driver, star wars, midnight express, apocalypse now etc.

i really loved Shutter Island.

trying not to spoil anything... but if you haven't seen it don't read further.

watching it a second time gives you a new level of appreciation for the movie. i saw it through twice on consecutive nights... and the real genius of it isn't necessarily the end, it's the double entendre that is on display right the way through. people acting "weird" suddenly seems rational for obvious reasons, etc. i thought it was rather excellent.

I totally agree.

i quite liked the departed - others i find less than inspiring - it may have something to do with the current preoccupation with leo - who has done little else of value since basketball diaries where he was very, very good

Infernal Affairs is a far superior flick to The Departed IMO.

Funny - you hated Shutter Island because it was an American remake. And yet you liked an American remake of a rather good Hong Kong flick. Interesting.

And don't fret about the Oscars. Means nothing. I mean Avatar and Oscar talk went hand-in-hand, and Avatar blew. Hard.

Also, what is the obssession with The Deer Hunter? Worst war movie EVAR. Well, not really. But I didn't like it.

Great film but it does take a long time to kick in, a lot of people hate it for that but I like the character build up before it gets right in to it. Christoper Walkan was fantastic so was Robert De Niro.

There's a similar film called Bullet in the Head by John Woo which I probably like better than The Deer Hunter.

I heard all this talk about how brilliant it was...I saw it a few weeks back on free-to-air and was rather unimpressed to be honest. I found to be too "American".

Full Metal Jacket, on the other hand...Terrific film.

I''ll have to check out this Bullet In The Head film.

i disliked shutter island because it was a poor version of a very similar movie - angel heart leaves it for dead - alan parker is a magnificent director - it is not a specific re-make though as far as i am aware

haven't seen infernal affairs to compare to the departed

the re-making of movies i generally detest - leave alone a good thing is generally my view unless the director brings a new element to the thing

here endeth the lesson

i disagree completely - as i stated, up to a certain point the academy generally were pretty good and the oscars were a good guide (as the 1970s list shows) - by the time they got to avatar they had lost the plot entirely, anyone with half a brain can see that

as for deer hunter - it is an exceptionally powerful movie in my view (though not overly historical) - you have to view it in the period when the usa had barely looked at vietnam - i especially like the way the green beret at the bar is used in the wedding scene - superb stuff - maybe too deep for some

I disagree. I was a big Decap hater (I loathed Titanic) until about 5 or 6 years ago, when he won me over with performances in films like the Aviator, Blood Diamond and the Departed. Ever since then pretty much every film he's been in is a winner.

This^^

Blood Diamond and Departed changed my mindset regarding Leo. He is a talented actor IMO.

I don't disagree. I dislike when people decide to remake films for the sake of it.

The Departed was a direct remake of Infernal Affairs - nothing was really added, plot-wise, by the writers. It's not bad, but it's nowhere near as good as the original.

Incidentally, the American version of The Ring is blasphemous - Ringuu is a brilliant horror flick and The Ring is just...Eww. Americans can't do remakes!

I didn't hate Deer Hunter. But it received many plaudits, and I cannot agree with them all. I may be in the minority here, but films such as Full Metal Jacket and The Thin Red Line to me are superb war films. Deer Hunter just seemed full of itself.

But anything with De Niro in it is worth watching.

What's your view on the Best Actor Oscar? In my mind they usually get it right.

re-watched AVATAR last night on a small portable dvd screen. Can't say it was as good as the last time, being a rather predictable movie in itself.. a 2nd viewing wouldn't in any way have surpassed that.. and consequently, the spine tingling moments weren't as evident.

nonetheless a solid movie and a highly entertaining one that will keep lingering on in the back of me head

the best performance of this decade - bruno ganz in downfall - went unrewarded - says it all - ray was a good movie but please...

He was great. That is one terrific film.

But I thought Denzel was great in "Training Day". Perhaps it's a more "conventional" sort of role compared to playing Hitler, but still.
