Leo showed he could act in Gilbert Grape and Basketball Diaries. It's a shame we only started to pay attention to him during Titanic though. Admittedly it's still a good performance but the whole Leo-mania thing killed it.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World tomorrow, should be awesome.

Scott Pilgrim......utter sh*t, don't waste your time. Even the nostalgia value of the old 8 bit computer game sound effects wasn't enough to save this for me. The humour (if that's what you call it) was terrible, I don't think I laughed or chuckled to myself one bit. I get they style they were trying to do, but it fell flat for me. Maybe I am just getting old.......................

I'm the opposite, I loved it and even went back to see it a second time.

I've read the comics, but I still think a lot of other people will be able to enjoy it without knowing anything about it.

I knew nothing about it, so I didn't know what to expect. I was going to walk out about halfway through it but decided to keep watching it in case it got better............ it didn't!!!!!

Each to their own I guess, I just don't think it was that funny or witty, or whatever they were trying to do with it. I think Michael Cera is a funny lad (loved him in AD) but that character he played in SP was annoying.

saw manhunter for the first time the other night on fox classics - excellent movie i thought - william petersen (not such a big fan of the CSI stuff) was really very good, very brooding sort of character in the lead - michael mann going great guns around the same time as his classic miami vice work - the playing of hannibal lecktor (name changed to lecter for later movies) by brian cox was pretty impressive too i must say - especially as you have to be fully conscious of the genius of hopkins in silence - having seen them in this order rather than manhunter before silence of the lambs - would recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it

this is the future for movies about serial killers - a sub-genre which has exploded in the last 20 years and frankly is getting a bit boring - looking more deeply into what happens to the investigator in trying to empathise with the sociopath - petersen does this superbly in manhunter - it reminds me of nietzsche:
If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

Pan's Labyrinth. Great movie, although I would have liked more time spent on the fantasy storyline. Superb performance by the guy who played the Captain. Ultimate villain.

Funny People - the advertising I saw for this when it first came out made me expect something very different, still not bad.

I watched The Expendable last night it and it was better than I thought it would be. Good solid film. Good action, lots of over the top violence and the small comic relief was funny at times.

Expendables as well. Pretty much what I expected. Shoddy plot and a lot of killing. The president joke was a good one.

Been on a movie binge lately...

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - A faithful adaptation of a famous graphic novel that demonstrates in a highly stylized fashion the life of a 22 year old slacker who dates a 20 something year old girl with a lot of baggage. A fun flick, although your milage may vary depending on your views of lead actor Michael Cera who plays the role exactly as he played George Michael all those years ago on Arrested Development.

Brick - Stars Joseph Gordon Levitt as a high school vigilante hell bent on solving the murder of his ex-girl friend in a quirky noir environment. Lukas Haas' performance as The Pin steals the show.

Insomnia - A crime thriller that blurs the lines between right and wrong. A really solid flick that should be seen for the fog scene alone. Watching this flick also completed my entire trek through Nolan's filmography...and boy is it good.

The Ghost Writer - Roman Polanski's latest flick looks at an author's attempt at capturing the real life story of a fictional prime minister who's been involved in a series of war crimes. As he gets to know his subject, the reality of this former leaders crimes become clearer and he begins to fear for his own safety. A solid flick with some pretty good performances on display...and some not so good performances. Really liked the ending shot.

Kick-Ass - Is a fun adaptation of another graphic novel that proves that the life of a super hero isn't as glamorous as Spider Man or Bat Man would have you believe. Good action, decent story and a number of laughs makes Kick Ass one of the better movies of this year.

The Runaways - Was an all-girl rock band that nearly broke it big in the 1970's before the lifestyle became too much for them. Another solid flick but given the material should've been so much more than it was.
