Black Ice- I don't have a problem with ACDC taking 8 years' break in between albums if it means they churn something like this out everytime.

Esoteric - "The Maniacal Vale"

Unbelievably heavy, one of the best doom metal albums I've heard, ever. Esoteric have definitely been my find of the year band-wise, which I'm kicking myself for as I've known they existed for a decade now but never actually heard any of their stuff til now, and they're utterly briolliant.

Primordial's "To the Nameless Dead" would be close to it, but it's technically a 2007 release, although I only got it mid-year. Another epic album from one of those bands who always produce quality.

Fave CD's released this year:
Ayreon - 01011001. This is becoming one of my favorite CD's of all time
Opeth - Watershed
Testament - The Formation of Damnation
Trivium - Shogun

Pretty good:
Metallica - Death Magnetic
Dragonforce - Ultra beatdown.

Really disappointed:
Iced Earth - The Crucible of Man (Something Wicked Part 2). Maybe my expections for this were too high, but i just can't get into it like I should.

On high rotation at the moment: Bloc Party - Intimacy. Nice return to form, really enjoying it.

Ditto for: People Under The Stairs - Fun DMC. No one does bbq style ease-back vibes better. 'The Wiz' is the standout track - a loving serenade to Australia and pretty irresistible

December is the month of lists.

My top 10 albums of 08

1. Attack & Release - The Black Keys
2 Black Keys, 1 Dangermouse, a teaspoon of Ike Turner and some new instruments = the musical equivalent of the amphetamine speed. Only twice as addictive. Every track of this psychedelic bluesy soul album is a trip... to awesomeville.
Best track: I Got Mine

2. Only By The Night - Kings of Leon
Will be known as the album that brought the Kings to commercial radio and the masses. Despite it's flaw (17 is a dud), the album deserves all the exposure it gets. The opening four songs are equal to or greater than their best work, the rest are interesting and catchy, but the closing number is the climax. A huge soliloquy that builds builds builds, then recedes, and finally erupts.
Best track: Cold Desert

3. Red Yellow and Blue - Born Ruffians
Canadians rule indie-op, imo. The Ruffians continue that maple leaf tradition of jangling guitars, complex catchy melodies and super songwriting, eh. There's something fun and childlike about songs that celebrate having fun and being childlike. Innocent hedonism.
Best track: Hedonistic Me

4. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
I guess NY is pretty good for indie bands as well. The Paul Simon Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes comparison as been playd out but ffs I have to mention it again. It was a fkn great song and so is Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa. Kudos also for somone other than Kanye West name-dropping Louis Vuitton.
Best track: Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa

5. Flight Of The Conchords - Fligh Of The Conchords
Yeah so we illegal downloaders of their music, tv shows, radio shows and live shows were already well aware of these songs - big deal. With a bit of extra studio polish the Flightys sound dynamite, plus it was released this year so it qualifies. I am flipping the bird right now.
Best track: Think About It

6. The Renaissance - Q-Tip
Mr Abstract never disappoints. Real talk now: the nasally maestro is without doubt (in my mind) one of the most consistent, skilful, talented, influential mc's ever. From Tribe (I love every album) to his solo stuff (Amplified = way underrated), even his guest spots (check his verse on the Native Tongues remix of NERD's She Wants To Move, steals the show ahead of Mos, Common, De La!) Tip is a proven legend. This disc is another gem.
Best track: Move

7. I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings To - Martha Wainwright
She's great at album titles (a previous EP was called Bloody Mother F*cking A*shole), she's a great songwriter, and she's a great singer. Her emotive soulful voice delivers these catchy little tunes in a huge way.
Best track: You Cheated Me

8. Consolers of the Lonely - The Raconteurs
Rollicking pop tunes were the order of the day again for Jack White and his pals, and they do an excellent job of it with Many Shades of Black and Old Enough. But White's epic tale Carolina Drama is a stunning and brilliant jolt from left field.
Best track: Carolina Drama

9. Oracular Spectacular - MGMT
Like a sugar high that rarely fades, the kaleidoscope of sound and colour helps this album avoid the usual pitfalls of Nova-exposure. An exciting, intriguing album from the get-go to the let-go.
Best track: Time To Pretend

10. Rising Down - The Roots
Not as dark (or as good) as Game Theory but still packed with power, vitriol and typical deep rolling grooves. Black Thought's final verse on I Will Not Apologise is worth the price of admission alone.
Best track: I Will Not Apologise

Encouragement awards: Bloc Party, People Under The Stairs, The Last Shadow Puppets, Pete Rock, Atmosphere, NERD.

Im a big fan of PUTS, got all their albums, seen em live a few times, but i was real dissapointed in the Stepfather LP, so i haven't grabbed this one yet, is it worth it, compared to like Question in the form of an Answer, The Next Step etc?

lyrics alone? ... nas failed big time and it was a bigger disappointment than Hip Hop Is Dead ... lyrically nas would have been 5/10 and production should get a 2/10 and only one song -sly fox- had lyrics and production on point ...

nas' problem is he has too much filler on his albums ... if he merged the best parts of god's son, SD, HHID and untitled he'd have a classic and cut down stillmatic to about 10 he'd have three classics

</p&gtWould have to agree, Chino XL is a perfect example, the guy's got lyrics, but his albums are still boring and hard to sit down and listen to from start to finish.

inspired by Godz, the coolest guy i've never met, my top 10 for the year so far:

TV on the Radio - Dear Science
I didn't think they'd be able to outdo 2006's Return to Cookie Mountain. Just go and buy it. Now. Seriously.
Favourite Track: Family Tree

Foals - Antidotes
The words "math" and "rock" should be mutually exclusive, but these guys just make it so damn fun.
Favorite Track: Cassius

Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
Evokes memories of my misspent youth sitting in front of a Sega Master System II; every bit as intense and entertaining and whole lot more sexy.
Favorite Track: Courtship Dating

The Black Keys - Attack and Release
Who would've thought their dirty, bluesy rock would react so well to a good spit-and-polish from Dangermouse? Sex.
Favorite Track: So He Won't Break

My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
I'd kinda forgotten about My Morning Jacket after 2005's Z, this is pretty good way to get my attention again. The folk and alt-country elements are still present, but there's a bit of funk thrown in for good measure.
Favorite Track: Highly Suspicious

The Kills - Midnight Boom
More accessible than their earlier work, every bit as gritty and sexy, maybe just a little more stylish. You'll feel dirty; but you'll love it.
Favorite Track: Last Day of Magic

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Every year I discover my favorite late night gem, last year it was Angus and Julia Stone's A Book Like This, this year it's For Emma, Forever Ago. Justin Vernon locked himself away in his father's mountain log cabin for four months where most of this album was written and recorded. The isolation oozes through the music's ambiance. Haunting.
Favorite Track: Creature Fear

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
While not a patch on 2004's Bright Like Neon Love, it's hard not to get drawn in by their creamy electro-pop. Light and bubbly, warm and breezy - it's still gonna get plenty of airtime this summer in my stereo.
Favorite Track: Feel the Love

The Fratellis - Here We Stand
If you were expecting something similar to the chant-along pub rock of Costello Music you'll be disappointed. The lyrics are still somewhat cheeky and lightheartedly misogynistic, but their sound has definitely matured.
Favourite Track: Acid Jazz Singer

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

Stripped-back afro-indie-pop. Fresh and fun.
Favourite Track: The Kids Don't Stand a Chance
