Where has Smith gone wrong?

Smith is starting to do Hagan impersonations. Danny Wicks gets selected every week, this week he would've been in ahead of Tolar had changes not been forced. Tolar had a solid game Wicks let in Soward for Try, then repeated the performance for Young to score. Then spent the rest of his time lounging around behind the backs. I don't want him anywhere near first grade again, still I've felt like that all year, he's a deadset joke. Then we have Bailey selected every week at 5/8th and Mullen at 7 when it's obvious to anyone with eyes that Mullen is no playmaker and Bailey rates along with Wicks as a 5/8th. You would think Smith would've learnt from last week, but no we start with them two again this week. Then just like last week when the games gone, on trots Dureau and we start scoring points. Why isn't Junior Sau starting each week? he's way in front of Doogs or Naiqama, but as soon as Kids goes back to fullback you just know that Wes will be back at centre ready to drop balls everywhere. Either that or we'll go with Luia. I'm over Smith and his wierd selections, and his playing mind games with the players. We need a settled halves combo and to get that we need to play them together week in week out. Oh yes Ben Cross, he is starting to look like the biggest non event we have ever purchased. Sure he's had injuries, but again it was interesting to hear him yesterday, worrying weather or not he'd make origin next year!!! Be nice if he actually considered how nice it'd be if he showed up for us and actually displayed some of the talk he's been sprouting. As for origin I am convinced it was Belemy that got him there definately wasn't ability displayed this year, so far he's a dud. Sure The ref didn't help us at all last night, but when we did have the ball we were awefull, forget the finals we will not make it. Smith will need to improve this side 100% next year if he wants to keep his job.

The problem with our squad at the moment is we go
Tackle 1 - Hitup
Tackle 2 - Hitup
Tackle 3 - Hitup
Tackle 4 - Spread the ball straight to centre
Tackle 5 - kick.

EVERY SET. No change in play, no direction, nothing.
I haven't seen a team so desperate for a half-back since Rudder has playing as the half, even then atleast he tried to playmake. Mullen and Bailey are both sh*t playmakers IMO and together they make a pair of sh*t halves.

Put a half in there, mullo to 5/8 and i wouldn't mind to see Bailey in PL tbh.

thats still more variety and better results then what Hagan is getting at Parra

Tony, agree 100%.

Smith is a fasimile of Supercoach Hagan, playing favourites, accepting mediocrity and engineering his own demise through a lack of results.

Unless theres a massive turnaround this year, I suspect that Smith is finished in 09, short of winning the grand final.

Not only is it not very effective, it's f**king boring to watch.

Think back to the Knights, Tigers, Eels and the Warriors teams of 5-8 years ago.......Rugby League is boring to watch nowdays.

The Eels Panthers game on TV yesterday was honestly as interesting as watching paint dry.

Even Origin was hardly what you would call exciting football.

Ironic , isnt it, Cross is out, and Royal is out, and sarge would have been straight in. But he is gone also, there is still White who I rate, and Tafua, but the problem now is they have to gel with the squad and get combinations going with Tolar and other forwards, which is hard when the PL guys dont always train with the NRL side. I feel sorry for Royal as now he can't prove his value to the club during negotiations even though I feel he has done plenty to justify retention, can't imagine how he is feeling right now, there can't be that much money left after signing De Gois anyway so he probably knows what they have left and it wouldn't be much, I heard he has been told to put his feelers out to other clubs, but they also have spent there money, so he is pushed into a corner. It looks as though Brian Smith is confident that so long as there implementing his game plan they will win with the players he puts on the park. But there attack has deteriorated a bit and there defence starts on par with the opposition but losers its sting quite alot getting into the game, which is contrary to early in the season. What has changed?? They worked hard on it in the pre season and it is showing how dropping it off considerably has affected it, and that is understandable as recovery is important for the next round which isn't an issue in the pre season but some of the things they were doing need to be brought back in to the program more then they are doing right now, apparently they spend very little time on it. I was confident the depth of players this year was skillful enough to do the job to make the finals, so it's not entirely the teams fault,I reckon there are players not on the field that should be. I think aku could have made good contributions to the game, he might be raw but, he has flare and his explosive pace could have made use of the open space out wide that was there at times and honestly I would put him on the wing before Sau, I think there is gonna be issues for him and Vuna under the highball from here on as they have been exposed already and aren't the tallest timber in the forest. White is a heavy front rower who also I thought would have contributed against a beefy pack the Dragons had. And tafua has much better go forward then a couple of forwars on the park. It's still possible for them to be there in the end but my hopes are fading fast.

To take the best fullback we've had for years & play him at hooker. Then take a good 5/8 & play him as a halfback that cannot direct a team or finish a set is not the way a good coach would run a team. I hope your reading this Brian.
All your doing is destroying the ability these blokes had in winning games.
Their replacements are not up to the standard needed to fill those rolls. Wes, imo needs time in a lower grade to work on his skills. He seems to have difficulty in hanging on to the ball sometimes and then when he does hang on he doesn't know what to do with it. Junior Sau should be his replacement for a few games to let Wes know he has to improve to get his spot back. Vuna makes far too many mistakes & needs the same wake up call. Give Uate a shot at it. Mad Dog & Lulia are not 1st grade material either imo.
Just a few things I needed to get off the chest now that i've recovered after last weekend.
