Which clubs make/break careers?

The problem I have is that there are so many stages in a career Ups and downs A backup at one club can get an opportunity at another club It doesnt mean the new team is the maker

For the most part the top teams start with better players Broncos Storm Bulldogs Dragons were the strongest last year and they were all filled with top level juniors

There was a list of Bulldogs players Most were top level juniors Patten (Australian Schools) Lolesi (Junior Kiwis, QSS) Tonga (NSW 19s) O'Meley (?) Armit (NSW 18s 19s) and Holdsworth (WA)

How did the Bulldogs make Holdsworth Penrith have had the biggest hand by bringing him over and the Dragons brought him up to first grade standard The Bulldogs didnt have much choice but buy and play Holdsworth He played the way Penrith thought he could when they brought him over That purchase came directly after the Bulldogs couldnt keep control of Thurston who is a much bigger talent

Much easier to define teams who break careers When you look at Souths under 16 and 18 year olds over the years they should have been at least a mid table team and the Sharks even higher consistently but the top juniors left those clubs once they saw they were going backwards

I think an interesting one is Parramatta who have also wasted talented over the years They have a good structure but other teams like Penrith Newcastle and Canberra have won

Dragons (with Illawarra) and Cowboys may be heading down the same path but they are both still forming their structures

Storm for me would be the place to resurrect, revive or commence your career. They seem to have a knack of taking cast offs and turning them into exceptional players.

I agree with those, but we certainly have a lot more failure than success though.

Remember Brett Hetherington, Owen Cunnigham, Willie Morganson, Jason Martin, Scott Mahon, Luke Phillips, Scott Donald etc. etc.
Been quite a while since we signed those blokes. Try Paul Rauhihi, Luke O'Donnell and Julian O'Neill.

A lot of people have said that souths break careers but I would like to know who exactly those players are. Souths, except for this year, have not really signed a player that was wanted by most other clubs. Harrison played Origin with us and than had a terrible year with the Roosters. Merrit started with souths and showed potential, went to the sharks and played premier league only to come back to souths and become the competitions leading try scorer.

Who are these players that souths have broken?

Julian? What the hell did the cowboys do to help his career?
He played his best football in years during the two years he was with us. He only fell away again when he left.

He wasnt exactly in career best form when we bought him. He wouldnt have been in the Roosters starting squad had he stayed with them.

I’d argue that it may not always be the fault of clubs like south’s to kill off a good career. It may however be that if a player has come form a club with all bright and sparkly talent across the field; that the player has relied heavily on these players in support. When that kind of support is no longer there it’s not really a huge wonder that the players no longer continue to thrive.

I’ll highlight this with an example: Braith Anasta. He moved from the dogs where he was great at times to the roosters where he sucks. But more importantly he moved from riding in the wake a massive dominating forward pack to the roosters, where the support just wasn’t the same.

You may argue that the fault is with the club for not having the support that the player needed, but I am more inclined to think it is the fault of the player and the player’s manager for not realizing that players with lots of bright sparkles around them get reflective glow. The more sparkles the greater the glow.

Instead they chase the quick buck.

It’s not the clubs fault for offering more money either. They need the exciting and popular players to draw reputation and crowds and therefore revenue, so they can afford to buy more sparkles. They need the reputation. Other players are more likely to sign with a club if there are already good and exciting players at the club. I therefore find it hard to believe that is the fault of the clubs in this situation that a player's career fizzles.

Yep true.
I remember one game he had a clear break and after 10 or so metres he pulled up.
I knew he was in pain but I hate to think how much pain.
Now that he has the operation he is running full sprints etc and looking trimmer than he was last year.

Id say probably one of the dumbest things Ive seen ever in League was Mark Carroll deciding to leave a strong Penrith squad for Souths.

He was a reserve grader at Penrith, went to Souths and played for Australia. Yeah, what an idiot?

For anyone that has suffered a groin injury they will tell you it affects your whole game, you cant go hard in attack or defence. The best tell tail sign last year for braith was his kicking game, his boot was not existant, he kicked very shallow and he is renowned for having a very big boot. Needs to produce the good this year!

And you wonder why nobody takes eels fans seriously....

Never wondered anything of the sort and would like to see who you deem to be a better winger, bearing in mind that the candidates you are most likely to name aren't specialist wingers.

Preston Campbell, whilst he wasn't a high-profile signing back then, had a dream year in 2001 - only to have his career almost obliterated by sharks management the following year. An example of a club making then, potentially, breaking a career I guess.

Fortunately he was signed up by the Panthers and he now holds in posession something that any sharks player will never have the chance of owning - a premiership ring.

Probably wants another one as well, probably why he left.

Could also be argued then we made him, could it not?

While he was unfairly jerked around in his last year with us, we most certainly didn't break his career. Try again.

It was Anderson who jerked Preston around (and a number of other players who didnt meet his "criteria"), a factor Sharks management corrected shortly afterwards. I would say Dally M Half of the year was probably a pretty good thing to put on Presto's resume, something he did at Cronulla.
