Without trying to look like the typical clown in here that jumps to the defence of players of their fave team ( I would say this even if I wasn't a NQ fan) but I think you are being a little harsh on Thurston there mate. The cowboys have had some f**king disgraceful nuffies play for us over the last few years dragging the team down, he can't do it all by himself every week.

But he did win a premiership in 04 though.........
Talent wise Thurston is miles above Langer but so were Sterling, Stuart and Johns.

But Langer has a career that is superior to all of them. You can say he had a champion team but he was the leader and developed into a player who knew what he had to do to be and remain successful, a little like Lockyer.

Langer is an out and out champion, Thurston is probably not quite but he has a long way to go. I would like to see Thurston win a premiership with the Cowboys, although he won in 04 he was not the player he is now and was one of those players along for the ride. If he won before the end of his career with the Cowboys steering them around as he has done for 5-6 years then I think this comparison would be a little closer.

Excellent post. I have to agree with the points set out by Beave as well. You're only as good as the players around you and Langer never had to put up with nuffies like Carl Webb, Michael Bani and Grant Rovelli. The Broncos for a long time there had the pick of the best Queensland players.

I chose Langer because of his career achievements moreso than any comparison of skill between him and Thurston. Personally I don't think there was much difference in skill between Thurston and Langer, both are very dangerous players close to the opposition line and had direct influence over the outcome of a game. I'll let you guys choose based on skill because between those two, you've got me beat :?.

It's never easy choosing between one champion and another.

Purtell as much as he sucks.

Steve Mortimer or Greg Alexander ?

Greg Alexander would have been close to an immortal if Ben hadnt died.

Well put it this way. Thurston is bigger, stronger, faster, better passing and kicking game, more overall control on a game in general than Langer ever was. Langer was feisty and a competitor and he was a dangerous individualistic player.

On the surface Thurston is far more skilled but Langer and his competitiveness allowed him to make up for that gap and his numbers speak for themselves.

You should know Mick Neil he was the player Mal Meninga famously ankle tapped in the 1989 grand final to save the game (one of the many many saves)

Cogger is a Magpies winger from the 80s i don't know much about, has some records to his name though. I'll go Cogger.

I am a fence sitter regarding your question, both great sides.

No Trevor was a half/ five eighth. Very underated player.

Thurston v Langer is impossible imo. Who would you rather playing for your life? Flip a coin, mate.

Maybe JT gets it for his goalkicking...

1994 Raiders over any Bronco side ever assembled. Though Manly for the first 17 rounds of 1995 were the best team i ever saw - they were smashing everyone, once in a generation form from a team.

Langer over JT - Thurston risks a big red cross on his resume if he can't lead a side to a title as half.

Osbourne for mine Beave.

Mullins 'miracle' or Benji's GF flick to Richards

It's a real shame the Broncs of the early 90s never got to play a GF against one of those amazing Canberra sides.

I'll take the Benji flick.

Matt Parsons or Roy Asotasi?

Playing for my life, 5 minutes to go and the game on the line.

Langer 101/100.

For all Thurstons skills he still comes up short when its business time in the NRL.

And lets not forget at SOO level Langer had some of the more dominant efforts in its history. In a far less talented side then Thurston has played in.

And Personally I dont get all this player x has more skills so he's better bullshit. As far as Im concerned its what you do to influence the result of the big games that defines greatness.

I think Cooper is overrated but he's more reliable than Tate.
