OK. Let's look at this from an announcement point of view.
Where and when would get the most attention announcing the new head coach?

The word around is that the so called experienced person "has a year to go".

I can't see it being Bennett.

Someone with "a year to go" is Shane Flanagan. He has 2021 where he can't be a 'Head Coach'.
Plenty of ways around that if you ask me.

Food for thought.

Flanagan as assistant to Payten?

Bellemy also has year to go. Think Des might as well. Would be a bit rough on someone to hold the fort for 12 mths then have to pack their bags

Not if it is someone like Payten. Basically getting a head coach gig that he otherwise wouldn't. And if he performed well, his stakes as a head coach elsewhere in the future would rise immensely.

Well played Payten.
As presumed all smoke and mirrors from Warriors management.
They don’t have a top level coach.

Interesting quote when he mentions family issues being a major part and “other issues I don’t want to make public”

He handles himself very well, more impressed with his communication every time I see him

Also find it interesting he says that he will still be at the Warriors next year as he is contracted for another year, but he made it clear he wants the Cowboys job

That interview has actually blown me away, he praised the players while also laying out their weaknesses, he correctly stated what sort of players and coach the club needs going forward, saying they need a coach that is a teacher as they skills are there but the guys don’t understand footy outside of 3-4 guys in the squad

George must be sitting at home squirming right now and there is a sniff about this that something isn’t quite right behind the scenes and Payten has gone on live TV and shot a rocket through the joint

His wife's father just started chemo.

Straight shooter alright, when asked about other opportunities, asked if it Cowboys and said yes.
Not in a process with them, but they are aware of him.

Just watched his interview. Some key points :

- he looked like he had the shits, very direct answers, sometimes very short.
- he touched on family as the reason why he didn't wanna take the job full time.
- basically said we only have 3 or 4 footballers in the team and the rest are just athletes who need to be taught game awareness.
- Was probed on turning down the coaching offer with us and then basically prompted into confirming that he has his eye on the cowboys job.
- hasn't applied for the cows job, but the club knows he's interested which one can only assume is code for manager is in discussions with them.

My take:
He did actually want the warriors job but the terms were not to his liking. Which to me sounds like the club know who they want and wanted him in a 1 year role until that coach is able to come. In my opinion if he was offered the long term role I reckon he takes it. I hope he already had this conversation with the players prior to the 360 interview coz for them to just hear that fresh will be awkward as f**k at training tomorrow.

Also just for fun, my speculation on who he is referring to as the footballers in the squad are:
RTS
Green
Tohu

Not the best interview in my opinion, comes across as very direct and honest, but also felt like he left alot out as well. If you're gonna go that way, you gotta open the book fully and be completely honest, can't just show us the first paragraph.

Why the heck did he make this public?

Now anyone else who interviewed or were still in the running know they weren't first choice...

Fair call, put family first. Fair call, turn it down if its not right. But now Green or Griffin or whomever else we turn to with our tails between our legs makes us look even worse

Usually I'd agree, but I don't think Green/Griffin etc will be too bruised in the ego by it (or whoever is now appointed). We offered the job to an internal guy they knew a lot about. Todd Payten seems like a high quality individual to me, I'm a bit gutted he is turning us down.

He'd be very brave to say what he did, if the Warriors only wanted him for a year. No doubt Mark Robinson and his ego, if what you are guessing is true, would clear that up pretty quickly and not make the club look like they've been rejected.

I like Payten more and more... boss move, but doing what he believes is right with integrity it seems
