Who will be the Warriors new coach?

They must have only offered him one year right? If he turned that down knowing it was just warming the seat for their first choice to takeover in 2022, that’s not a big loss. If he turned down a long term contract, that’s more of a slap on the face to Warriors HQ.

I wonder if the team will continue playing for Todd.Several of the players publicly endorsed him and it might feel like a slap in the face to them.I wonder what the issues that he didnt want to go into might be-too much owner interference?Shabby treatment of the previous coach?

Why the heck did he make this public?

Now anyone else who interviewed or were still in the running know they weren't first choice...

Fair call, put family first. Fair call, turn it down if its not right. But now Green or Griffin or whomever else we turn to with our tails between our legs makes us look even worse

It may well have been done to embarrass Warriors management.
He is probably tired of all the bs.

I’d love to know what’s happened in between the pre recorded chat where he speaks about wanting the job to the point where he rings back and says I want to go on live to say I turned it down

Is it a case of not wanting to mislead the public, or has there been some sort of blowup with management, or maybe the Cowboys have told his manager he is a frontrunner there

When you think you’ve seen it all in league it always manages to deliver somethings new

His assessment of the Warriors squad is spot on. They don't have the skills or size.

Maybe Green, but dead set average his entire career, one good year at Manly.

from the top of this thread:
"
Todd Payten

Pros

A man on the rise according to the drum beats. Payten's initial media interviews as interim head coach reveal an authentic and down-to-earth character. If he was to perform a miracle under these circumstances it would be hard to turn him down if Payten felt ready. But nobody knows if he has the head coaching acumen yet, and they won't for some time.

Cons

Timing. Kearney's assistant, until the weekend drama, may not even have enough games in which to impress the Warriors bosses, before they make the new appointment. After all, a reason for sacking Kearney when they did was to give a new coach time to get everything in order before taking over next year.

It is clear the Warriors have no intention of making him their first grade coach. He would have to produce one of the great bursts of stunning and unexpected success to change the thinking.

Chances: Slim to zero.

To me this is a big FU to the Warriors owners/management IMO. Probably with the way his Moses buddies were treated, which were all dropped publicly, so Payten has done the same.

There will be multiple reasons to why he didn't take it, Father in laws cancer, not liking/trusting the management, the terms of the deal offered, the Cowboys job up for grabs. That's several valid reasons.

This could potentially be a play to get sacked, so he can join the Cowboys for next season. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the job is his if he can get out of his current deal.

Right, I'd take Griffen hearing what Todd was saying. Someone who can teach Rugby League to a bunch of athletes.

I dont think Payten will get Cowboys .... Too much recognised competition.

Wonder if that opens the door for Justin Morgan.....was previously in the running years ago but not mentioned much these days?

Justin Morgan is the assistant coach. So he's probably in the mix, but don't think he cuts it as an NRL head coach.

We need a coach that will turn some of our boys into men. Thats always been the issue and i think it is one that Todd quickly identified.
Plus League is a very simple game. A good big man will always get the better of a good smaller man. Big bodies tire us out and we dont have anything to fight back with. How would we go if we had a Junior Paulo or a Klemmer in the team?
Strike centre? We dont have any of those. We dont have a Bradman Best coming through our ranks. Konrad was the closest we have had in a while but the entire Konrad package hamstringed us in the end.
Leaders. Another issue that Todd has had eyes on since he came here in 2018. Roger - Too quiet, too nice. Some of those captains challenges that his own players hoodwinked him into. - perfect example.
Harris - too quiet.
Green - had leadership but too inconsistent on the field.

So thats our big to do list at the present time.
Coach - nope
Big Bodies - BMM is coming but do we need another? Probably for some depth. LAM and Afoa arent Tier 1 props.
Strike centre - nope
Leadership - nope.

Compare to our best chance of a premiership.,
Coach - Anderson
Big Bodies- Villasanti, Tookey, Seuseu, Ali
Strike centre - Toopi
Leadership - Campion, Jones., Cleary

I would throw in a quality hooker that leads as well. eg Brandon Smith. Where do we get someone like that. Maybe we should look at the UK. Hodgson isnt the only decent hooker from over there.

Todd said there were other factors to his decision that he wouldn't discuss.
One would have to be the struggle the Warriors are having signing good players.
Good players don't want to come - we have no recognised way to bring on local juniors - big struggle ahead.

i guess the key difference between the warriors and the other nz based franchises playing in an Aussie comp. ie Breakers, Phoenix, Tuataras (to a lesser extent) is there is a bigger pool of players to choose from.

The Phoenix seem to pick up handy players from the UK, South America as well as Aussie journeyman to complement NZ players.

Breakers have plenty of comps around the world to choose from that have players that couldnt quite cut it in the nba but are still very handy players more than capable of holding their own in the Aussie comp (plus the import limit equalises the teams somewhat).

The Warriors have the Australian based comps, NRL, NSW and QLD reserve comps and the UK superleague -which is considered an inferior comp and retirement village for NRL players that couldnt cut it down here any more. Thats it.

I am not sure why we havent gone back to the UK for up and coming pommy players before they price themselves out of the market. The ones that come over seem to do well, on the whole. Did the Tompkins experiment put us off? Or when we jettisoned Dean Bell, did we lose a lot of contacts over there?

Old mate George on the radio

“It may take weeks or even months before we have a new coach”

Sounds like Todd has thrown a big cat amongst the pigeons

"The expression 'poisoned chalice' is frequently used in sports and politics to refer to a job or task given to someone. Initially, the person thinks he has been honoured; he soon realises, however, the job is, in fact, a burden — one that is likely to ruin his reputation."
