False. Preliminary final in 2013.

With respect to the salary cap (and the Knights are a club that I suspect do), Uncle Wayne has/had unlimited Tinkler money, a free hand in recruitment and a reputation that could attract almost any player. And yet, I wonder how Bennett rates his time at the Knights?

Personally, I think he'd be disappointed. I didn't say that he has been an abject failure. Just that he has struggled.

Do you remember Knights supporters elation at his signing? They were going to wave at us from their lofty perch at top of the ladder.

But as I said before, thankfully, we are not the Knights.

The trajectory was happening though, they were on track. Great result in 2013, improving squad for 2014.
Then the Tinkler troubles bubbled to the surface, Packer was arrested, McKinnon career ended, and the Tinkler bubbles became a torrent.

Disappointed in Nathan Tinklers financial failings , Russell Packers behaviour and shattered over Alex McKinnon's injury....I can see why he has struggled.

I always felt Bennett had an almighty soft spot for the Dragons. Still recall his claim that his 3 years at the RedV where amongst his happiest and most memorable of his long career. He seems to be in a dark place presently at the Knights and he doesn't strike me as a quitter, so I would be surprised if he walked away. Then again his career is winding down towards the back end & he may be drawn back to the dragons for his own happiness and accustomed surroundings. I truely hope he does return and can bring some of his support staff, like Jeremy Hickman back as well. Our promising young players need the motivational edge and guidance of an old wise coach.

They just scraped into the 8 & at one point didnt look they would make it much like the position we are in right now. His record is now the worst of any knights coach.
Fair enough mate but who would you like to be our coach? im not being smart just asking.

Security, Security, Security, he is not 44, he is 64, He would be over it at Newcastle, he doesn't need tinkler dramas and co. My gut, he will be back.

On 4BC radio this morning, Gold Coast are not in the hunt to sign Bennett. So from that I would say:
Henry as Gold Coast head coach.
Bennett to either, Broncos or Dragons.

It's rumoured that Bennett would have to accept a 400k pay cut to stay at Newcastle and I'm guessing he won't go for that.

Posted this on another thred by mistake.

I'm not going to judge Bennett on a single year at the Knights that has been by anyone's estimation an 'annus horribilus'. It's been well documented in here why.
His previous, what, 30 odd years though? That's something to judge him on.
In particular, 'The era'. We were all a part of it, and it shouldn't be dismissed easily.
Based on that, I'd be stoked to give him another shot here. Apart from the rumours though, is there any suggestion that it's actually what he wants, or that there is any interest on his part at all? I haven't seen anything to support that view.

P.S. On Bennett and his raiding. He stole Cuthbertson!!

There's always the chance he'll pinch Leeson as well.
At least you can hope.:D

Don't disregard Como's mail my friend. I have it on good authority that he has it on good authority.
FACT. Well fiction actually, but it often passes as the same thing around here anyway.

Paul McGregor happy to bide his time over uncertain future

By MITCH JENNINGS

June 27, 2014, 8:28 p.m.

Paul McGregor

RUGBY LEAGUE - DRAGONS
While it may be ajar for the return of Wayne Bennett, caretaker Paul McGregor is adamant he won't be knocking on chief executive Peter Doust's door in pursuit of a speedy resolution to the Dragons' coaching position.
Bennett's future with Newcastle is in doubt after the NRL assumed ownership of the club following the ousting of former owner Nathan Tinkler two weeks ago.
Bennett told Fairfax Media on Thursday the Knights were "four to five years" away from becoming a premiership force but remained noncommittal as to whether he is the man to take them there.
The uncertainty has seen him linked to the club he led to a premiership in 2010 but McGregor said he's in no hurry to settle his own future with the Dragons.
"I've got plenty of things to do with my time without sitting there worrying about next year," McGregor said.
"I'm in no hurry. I always worry about what I can control and what I can control right now it this footy team. As far as worrying about who's going to be the coach ... I couldn't give a rat's to be honest."
McGregor said he was yet to be approached by the club to discuss the long-term head-coaching role.
"At the moment the club hasn't approached me about next year," he said.
"The club's got to search for the best coach. That's their job and if you're searching for the best coaches you need to see who's available, see who's had success, see how this year pans out. That takes time.
"If it doesn't come before round 26, it doesn't come before round 26. I don't really care on that one, I'm not too concerned about it.
"I just worry about what needs to happen right now. If the job gets offered or it gets given to someone else ... congratulations. I'll re-assess that when it comes."
A month on from reluctantly stepping into the coaching hot-seat following the sacking of Steve Price, the Dragons are 2-2 and McGregor admitted he is warming to the role.
"I'm enjoying the role and I see the club improving in the role that I'm playing and that's important," he said.

I'm coming to the view that the Dragons are Bennett's second choice for next year. I think the Broncos - as coaching Director - would be his preferred move for next year on however, there seems to be some sort of resistance for this at the Broncos.

I'm sure the Board have already made up their mind regarding first choice for head coach and that is Bennett. Now it's up to Bennett to make his decision.

My greatest fear is that the Board do not have a good plan B as was the case with the hunt for Bellamy. For me the plan Be should be Sheens but who knows what the Board members are thinking,

From what I've been told, they do have a Plan B, one that I'm quite happy with...
