I disagree , the newer clubs don't so much
the old sydney clubs do because they were the only clubs around & people picked a side if they lived outside of Sydney.
& the only other factor for someone to follow a club is success , The Raiders became popular outside of their region because of their well above average success , The Storm the same.
Qlders from all over that state gravitated to the Broncos because they were the only club from that state for a while .You're an anomaly following the Knights for no particular reason.

There is no logical reason for someone from the Nthn Suburbs of Brisbane to follow a new team bearing the name of a region elsewhere.
Again , the Dolphins would have engaged marketing experts telling them this very thing. Hence not doing it
Disagree

Living in Brisbane I see jerseys from teams all over the comp. Nth Qld is popular mostly because they were a direct alternative to the Broncos, much like the Dolphins will be. The Storm are popular because they are seen as a faux Qld team. I think you

Kids follow players and mascots that they like bro, they are fickle simple creatures. Its a new age and the young fans of now will be the future rusted on ones

Do you ask all the owners of the Jerseys why they're wearing them ?
I'd doubt it
The cowboys are popular because they're fans are mainly from Nth Qld , not exclusively .. mainly.

All you're creating with a name like Redcliffe , SC.. Maroochydore or Moreton Bay ,
is another Manly or Cronulla in QLD
a small club with limited appeal.

I like that they haven't committed to a name yet , theres no rush

oh... he told them to did he ? 🙄
Yep.

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo also defended the decision which he indicated the governing body was involved in making.

“It’s important for us that we have a say in this because this is about the growth of the game,” he said.

“Historically it’s been a decision made by the club but for us it made sense for them to be the Dolphins

I know there is an actual Moreton Bay and if they use that in their name I guess it could work. I think when the Dolphins claim to represent the Moreton Bay council region though I am a bit sceptical. Redcliffe has an identity, Caboolture has an identity, Pine Rivers had an identity. Moreton Bay regional council has no identity, that's from someone who lives here.
They should saddle up with Wynnum Manly.

Reckon the club will eventually drop the "The" after some years of backlash, meager metrics, and re-adopt Redcliffe or Moreton Bay or something.

The Brisbane Broncos should be made to change their name to The Donkeys.
People make mistakes. Just because marketing experts, graphic designers for uniforms, league executives have such power and standing, doesn't mean they're always right.

Sport apparel companies come up with horrible jerseys that fans revolt against, forcing change back to simpler designs or a traditional design.

League executives have to double back on a number of decisions and correct errors made.

Not saying I'm right often or infallible, but I reckon on this "what's in a name" topic I will be vindicated. At some future point, the Dolphins will end up adopting a name of some kind.

Moreton Bay Dolphins is marketable as dolphins live in Moreton Bay. The club could run promos of dolphins swimming in Moreton Bay and then show players from The Dolphins swimming, surfing and fishing on North Stradbroke Island.

ofc they will , no-one ever said they wouldn't
its just not going to be after some suburban area or small coastal village , & after they've successfully engaged their entire fan base north of the CBD, they'll change to Brisbane or North Brisbane

Yep, many people have insisted "The" is a bad choice and that a place name is needed. Not just me, many will be vindicated in time.

As for the theory that a unique place name makes for a better name.....it's not something that can be proven or quantified. Just an opinion, philosophy, the whole Maroochydore rant I did. Reckon I'm right tho.

Reckon I'm also right that a name of a particular place doesn't necessarily mean that a club can't attract a broad fanbase outside of that place/region. There are examples of that at least to back that up. St George, Collingwood, Essendon, etc. What created that broad fanbase was decades of time, popularity, success, iconic jersey that becomes famed, etc.

they should go by Greater Brisbane Dolphins with sponsorship from Redcliffe council so they have REDCLIFFE across the front of the jersey.

Their choice of "geographical" name makes little difference at this point. They had painted themselves into a corner as soon as they decided keep the Dolphins brand. Once that decision was made it made picking a geographical name impossible without it having a negative impact on their potential audience.

If they went with Redcliffe Dolphins they'd have alienated potential fans outside their traditional market. If they went with Morton Bay they would have pissed off a bunch of their traditional fanbase in Redcliffe and alienated a bunch of people in North Brisbane. If they went with Brisbane/North Brisbane then they'd have alienated Morton Bay and Redcliffe fans. Not picking a geographical identifier pisses a portion of everybody off.

So in other words they couldn't win, whichever route they went they were going to alienate a potential customer base.

If, on the other hand, they'd have abandoned the Dolphins brand for their NRL side and created something neutral then they could have constructed a new fanbase that drew from a broad cross section of Brisbane's society, but they refused to do that, and V'landys and the ARLC are so unbelievably myopic and stuck in the past that they gave them a license anyway.

Ironic this article uses Souths' bunny as an example of a "single symbol or name" having an impact.

Everyone knows Souths stands for South Sydney. FFS. 'Dolphins' is a typical non-decision decision.

The Dolphin is a strong brand & may end up being one of the strongest in Australian sport , It would have been utterly insane to call themselves anything else.

@baselinepanther yes, you are correct. @The Great Dane is super salty about them winning the bid and therefore comes up with these arguments to discredit them before they've even kicked a ball in the NRL.
