The ARLC had no option but to choose Redcliffe. No one cared about the neutral Bombers bid, which forced it to saddle up with Ipswich. Redcliffe had the most money and is the safest bet. The three BRL clubs were head and shoulders superior to the neutral Bombers bid.

i think there is a critical mass of League fans in the brisbane area that will support a new team no matter what the name is- lets hope anyway.
Absolutely, and whatever that number is, 20k... 25k it will only grow over time. Success and a well run club only speed the process along obviously.

well they had a choice

they just chose correctly ....
It was the correct choice. I reckon it will be successful.

Over 15 or 20 years it should be able to rack up a supporter base of 25k hardcore fans.

Yes, you know as well as I do that any club that entered the NRL as the second Brisbane club will instantly be the second or third highest attended club in the league behind the Broncs and maybe Parra.

The TV ratings it generates are what I'm interested in. If they're as big as the Broncos then it will bode well for us in 2028 and speed up the introduction of Brisbane 3.

they'd need to be pretty competitive early to get the figures needed

Broncos
1988 won their first 6 in a row , just missed the finals
1989 playoff for 5th , which they lost
1990 made the finals

It's tricky for the NRL to "engineer" a competitive expansion team from day 1, as they have less levers to pull than (say) AFL... and that's a real risk.

Thats fine, I'm not sure I agree with cap concessions for new teams. If they pulled off a Storm and won in their 2nd year everyone would question it.

AFL can have all their concessions, allowances and forced transfers. I'm glad the NRL doesn't do that.

I agree with this, the AFL giving advantages to new teams so they do well basically white ants the integrity of the competition

yep, thats what i'm referring to. It undermines the integrity of the comp which should never ever be done. Imagine if the Storm were receiving a COLA payment for the past 20 years with their success? NRL fans would be protesting outside of NRL hq. The AFL is lucky they have such a compliant media and brainwashed masses of fans.

If I were a GWS fan and the AFL 'bought' me a premiership, it's got to feel a big hollow surely. Plus if I'm a fan of a century old traditional club in Melbourne, I'm not real happy that I'm helping fund a rival club winning a premiership over my club.

I get the 'help the new club' attitude but to put it bluntly it is rigging the comp.
