We use the video ref for correcting other errors. For example the catch in the in-goal earlier in the game, the dead ball line, grounding, touchlines and foul play. It makes no sense to not use the video to correct 'obvious' forward passes that were missed.
I'm in no way stating this changed the outcome of the game last night. Manly had their chances and failed to kick a field goal. I'm a fairly logical person, and if we score a try off a pass like that I wouldn't be upset if it got overturned one bit.
The rule is simple, but no doubt the execution would get screwed up somehow. A forward pass can only be ruled on by a video ref if it very clear it has been obviously missed by the 4 on field officials and none of the on field officials felt they clearly saw the pass. I would expect the Video ref to say to the on field ref, "There appears to be a significant forward pass from X to Y. Was the pass cleared?" On Field ref talks to the other bludgers, they all say "Uhhhh dunno, didn't see it" or "It came out of the hands backwards and floated forward, I had a good line on it". Based on the touchies who can't see judge a foot crossing a line from point blank range, I'd be expecting far more "Uhhhh dunno's."
