Why didn't the AFL experience a super league war?

Does that not indicate the significance of including AFL in private school sports curricula? And by implication, the effects of excluding RL.
You know afl actually is in private schools in Sydney

there’s been a huge fall in the number of union trams in private schools

the nrl could try to get into those schools but the reality is people in those schools are exposed to rugby league anyway

league in Sydney really is like soccer in England but the crowds aren’t as large

The afl strategy has always been to get into qld and Nsw private schools to access the elite athletes that play union. They’ve been successful to some extent thus the decline in the wallabies. That’s why their draft players from nsw and qld are double barrelled surnamed skinny white boys that wouldn’t last 5 minutes on a rugby league pitch. I was dragged along to an afl game two years ago and I could not believe the dominant number of white players. It’s really obvious compared to any other sporting code. It explains why racism is rampant across the code even at senior coaching levels.

Instead of getting those skinny kids jumping at line outs they are playing afl instead so no loss for us

meanwhile islanders didn’t follow Israel folou into afl and those players are the stars of league

Why did Murdoch target rugby league? The AFL seemed to coast through without anyone touching them

The simple answer is that Packer had the ARL/NSWRL pay TV rights for free in his TV contract. He was smart enough to include that. Murdoch realised he needed sport for the Pay TV venture to succeed. Unable to get the rights, he decided that his best way forward was to start his own comp. Super League war begins.

Watched that on video too.

Given that I was backing the Tigers, my moment of the match was the Sironen try. That year`s Balmain Pom was Andy Currier. Not exactly Ellery Hanley from the year before, but it was his in-field kick that ultimately lead to big Sirro charging to the line.

Micron video?

I prefer Tag to Touch. That`s League Tag rather than Oztag. The structure and patterns of play are a lot closer to Tackle RL. Touch has taken on a life of its own. Over here the RFU have traditionally had their fingerprints all over Touch.

As far as I know there is no Ladies or Girls League Tag in QLD. It`s a glaring omission given the success in NSW. Strong participation numbers in the Cronulla-Sutherland junior league and some group comps. Even WA and Vic seem to be doing more for Ladies League Tag than QLD.
Touch Rugby League is the preferred game in Queensland. I think it was created by a man from Logan.

Whether it's Touch Rugby League or League Tag, the only thing that matters is people are playing a version of our game.

Both sports have similar number of Aboriginal players. Do you mean the lack of Islanders in the AFL? I doubt there are any islanders actually playing the sport. There are heaps of Africans though, but very few in the NRL. All that shows is that difference between Melbourne and Sydney. Far fewer Islanders in Melbourne and they don’t play AFL no matter where they live. In Sydney, most Africans play soccer but in Melbourne they mainly play AFL - there are no RL clubs within 15km of Melbourne CDB and that is where many of the Africans live. Conversely, AFL is only strong in inner Sydney - where do most immigrants live when they come to Sydney?

Touch RL was invented in Sydney 1968 by South Sydney players

Souths Juniors LC ran the early competitions before the Touch RL Association was formed

Just as Packer did in the 70s when he wanted cricket on nine. Was a similar game plan.

I’m talking about professional AFL. It is a white dominated game. It’s obvious to anyone.

Yes, this is what I`m driving at.

Thirty years ago you would not have expected AFL to be the main beneficiary of a sharp decline in Australian RU. The cashed-up event-goers who typically attend Wallabies games in Sydney seem to have transferred their weekly allegiance from the Waratahs to the Swans. The two games are so different on the field that there has to be some cultural rationale behind the shift.

If the private schools who embraced Aussie Rules, apparently to the detriment of RU, had instead successfully added RL to their sports programmes maybe the Roosters would be pulling 25-30k average crowds rather than the Swans.

During the lean period for English Soccer people were still "exposed to" Soccer but they didn`t go to matches or follow a team. Playing a sport at school or having family members and friends who play a sport at school is far more likely to generate an active supporter base for that sport than simply existing in a city where it`s colloquially top dog.

Soccer used to be déclassé in England. You should be familiar with the hoary old chestnut, "Football is a game for gentlemen played by thugs; Rugby is a game for thugs played by gentlemen". In private schools and State grammars the first XV was traditionally the flagship.

The NRL should study how English Soccer transformed their image and revived their fortunes. Deep down, it`s all about social class.

I don`t think it`s only players they`re after. They want the cachet that comes with private school connections. This doesn`t just resonate with the networks of alumni. There`s a long history of the less affluent coveting the pastimes and habits of the more affluent.

Plus it affords greater power to control the media narrative.

Thankfully, it looks as though the push into Western Sydney is turning into the AFL`s Operation Barbarossa.

Corentin Le Cam, who played about a dozen games for Catalans, looks comically weird enough to be a full-forward in the Fumble-Bumble circus.

Approaching seven feet tall he`s recently signed for a low-ranking outfit of Roogerre-Boogerres, presumably as a line-out jumper.
