CQ NRL Bid CEO Denis Keeffe confident upgrade of Browne Park will go ahead to take it from "embarrassing" to a facility that looks like it belongs in this century. Chris Ison
WHEN the CQ Capras host visiting Queensland Cup teams at Browne Park, CQ Capras chief executive Denis Keeffe says he feels embarrassed.
"It's not friendly for sponsors, it's not friendly for fans - women and children in particular. The change rooms are a disgrace and I feel ashamed when visitors come and see the facilities ... it's time to pull it into the 21st century," Mr Keeffe said.

CQ NRL Bid CEO Denis Keeffe confident upgrade of Browne Park will go ahead to take it from "embarrassing" to a facility that looks like it belongs in this century. CHRIS ISON
Of the $1.8million, $1.6million would come from the State Government and $200,000 would come from the Browne Park Trust.
"We are currently going through the process with the current government. We've been told the upgrade has been included in the forward estimates ... it just needs to be approved," he said.
Although a new 22,000-seat stadium was planned for Rockhampton, Browne Park would remain the Capras' headquarters, as well as the centre point for district, schoolboys and girls rugby league.
Keeffe stressed the importance of revamping Browne Park for the future of the Capras.
He said it was difficult to promote a program when the facilities were not up to scratch or on par with other Q Cup team headquarters, such as Virgin Stadium in Mackay or Cairns' Barlow Park, Townsville's Dairy Farmers and Townsville Sports Reserve.
BRAND SPANKING NEW BROWNE PARK:

  • The proposed $1.8million refurbishment of Browne Park will include:
  • New three-storey building (where the old smokers' stand is)
  • Bottom floor - canteen area
  • Second floor - six corporate boxes
  • Top floor - media and coaches' boxes
  • Current grandstand upgrade will see a corporate area built on top and 600 high-quality seats installed
  • A new ceiling will be built on the grandstand
  • New rubber flooring
  • Changing rooms to be totally refurbished

Just a few facts.the Shires population at 30th june 2012 was estimated to be 221,147.
This is before the Greenhills new suburb at Wanda, the 600+ units to be built around Shark Park, the high density unit development at the Kirrawee brick pit site, and the strong chance of new a big suburban development near Menai.
Now this population is not spread over a hundred kms.The club has a $300m development surrounding a stadium it owns.$22.5m UCV land value ATM against a debt of $3m.
The stadium will also be upgraded down the line.
In addition the club has 200 sponsors ranging from big to small. It has a 46 year tradition, and its matches against st George average around 20,000 over time.It is more than just the local rivalry. The loss of the area would not be filled by St George, the loss of fans would be the result.
According to Bruno Cullen, the club is in a better financial position than a few other NRL clubs. And the 3rd or 4th biggest junior league in Sydney.
And they talk about relocation to an untried CQLD,whiteant one area to pump up another.Super league episode 2.

The sharks juniors would be bigger then say
Easts and manly our two grand finalists
Bigger then st George's but smaller then illawarras and the joint ventures combined.

So who else do they have more juniors than?

IMO the shire and surrounding area is a good growth area as well, probably the next best outside of the northwest and southwest.

Kicking the sharks out is lunacy. Maybe relocate them but if you are going to relocate anyone you also have to look at
Penrith
Manly and Easts

And IMO the only place currently worth relocating to is Perth.

Cq will not get in before cc in my opinion.

I'm guessing that they would be willing to play anywhere in the short term if it meant they had a team in the long term. Play at Brisbane for a year or two if need be...

Apparently a few options. Only obvious one is Mackay's Virgin Australia Stadium (possible bring in temporary seating also).
Clearly would be easier to start from scratch though

The new ARLC administration is about maximising business and revenue/profitability. No bid will come close to the financial backing CQ has. Unless any bid has a surprise up their sleeve.

Queensland needs at least another 2 NRL clubs. Where you put the new clubs is up for debate. In all probability Queensland could support another 4 NRL such is the popularity of Rugby League in Queensland.
The NRL needs to put at least 6 new clubs into the comp over the next 10 years to cater for ever growing demand for Rugby League.
2 new NRL clubs in Queensland. A NRL club on the Central coast. A NRL club in Perth. A club in PNG and another club in NZ

The Titans’ Luke Bailey takes on the Cowboys defence in the Mackay trials earlier this year. Lee Constable
MACKAY league fans have been dealt a blow with the city's stadium missing out on NRL trial games involving the NQ Cowboys early next year.
The Cowboys will instead play trials at Redcliffe and Toowoomba against the Broncos and Titans.
Their players will then compete in the World Nines at Auckland.
The trials are Broncos and Titans home games, so those clubs chose the venues.
Mackay NRL trials have been a regular feature of the start of the rugby league year since 2002, and the marquee event for Mackay and District Rugby League usually coincides with a "blitz" of schools and the community.
But Cowboys football manager Peter Parr said the club would continue to bring matches to Mackay and other NQ centres in the future.
"Our much preferred option is to play in North Queensland," he said.
"This year we played at Mt Isa, Cairns and Mackay, but for next year we're a victim of circumstance beyond our control.
"The Gold Coast has played at Mackay for the past two years, and this year they wanted to play at Toowoomba."
Mr Parr said Cowboys development officers would again conduct their blitz of schools and the community in Mackay early next year.
The loss of the match leaves Virgin Australia Stadium without a big event to start the year, but Mackay Regional Council director of community services Gerard Carlyon said there would be no effect on the budget to run the facility, which was transferred to the council this year.
"The professional bull riding and the international Vanuatu-Solomon Islands game will return to the stadium next year," he said.
"We're talking quite regularly with the Bulldogs about bringing their NRL match to Mackay again next year and in future years."

Not sure if that would include Widebay/Burnett clubs but on that alone quite a good number. A lot of CQ boys at the broncos for NRL/NYC, awaiting to see how much help the Capras receive

Not a bad comparison really.

Neither area should get a team any time soon in my opinion, but imagine if there was a Riverina bid how Queenslanders would carry on about it.

Will they have 8 figures worth of sponsorship and possibly the most in Australian pro sporting history as well?? worldclass stadium? 60+ players contracted to ESL, NRL & NYC clubs in 2014?

Mate, they'll have 9 figure sponsorships by the time we're ready. I'm on the phone as we speak.

We have a handy stadium just renovated courtesy of the AFL and wagga council. I'm sure it will do just fine. Unfortunately it isn't world class, but considering there would be 4 maybe 5 "world class" stadiums in this entire country I'm not counting it against us.

Of course we do! Everyone is related to someone from the riverina (thereby making them honorary citizens).

Mark it down everyone. Riverina Fresh. Nrl 2016.

Push for NRL team in Central Queensland continues - Keeffe

25th Nov 2013 6:00 AM

WITH four other locations bidding for an NRL stadium, Denis Keeffe and the rest of the CQ NRL Bid team are continuing to push to get an NRL team to represent CQ.

He said an NRL team would be a positive step forward for the region, promoting tourism and providing an economic stimulus.

"I think it's the most important decision, socially and economically, that this region has had for probably a lifetime," he said.

"My only concern is that we need to have a world class corporate stadium."

The former federal government granted the CQ NRL Bid money for the licensing and approvals stage of the stadium, and Denis said that process should be completed by this time next year.

Once the licensing and approvals stage is complete, the project will be put out to tender.

"Four other places want to build footy stadiums, we want to let CQ know we're in a battle here," he said.

Denis said the stadium would include a 1,000 seat convention centre that would become a vital community asset, not just one football fans can enjoy.

"Browne Park will still maintain, there's no threat there," he said.

Denis said they have proven their viability and the NRL had checked off on it.

He also emphasised the importance of the program at a grassroots level, with the junior development programs putting an emphasis on player welfare.

"It's about providing an opportunity for young men," he said.

"If we don't have a program here, they have to go away.

"We want to make them good players and good people." Kobe and Zac Hetherington, 14, are part of the U/14 junior development squad.

They said football is somethign they'd like to pursue in the future, and it was good to know they wouldn't have to leave home to do so.

"I hope to keep the camps happening," Kobe said.

"It would be good to keep building on it."

Stadium dream for CQ NRL Bid step closer to becoming reality

CENTRAL Queensland is one step closer to having a multi-purpose stadium in a positive move forward for the region.
The CQ Stadium committee was announced on Wednesday and the stadium logo launched at CQ Leagues Club in Rockhampton after $500,000 was recently secured from the Federal Government for the licensing and approvals stage of the stadium.
A steering committee, featuring CQ NRL Bid team members Geoff Murphy, Denis Keeffe and Ray Condor, along with local council and state government representatives and Rockhampton business community members was compiled to get the stadium project ready to tender by June next year.
CQ NRL Bid and Capras' chairman Geoff Murphy said it was a watershed time for both the bid and the CQ region.
"It will be a stadium for all sports and events including concerts and it also has a 1000-seat convention centre - something we have been looking forward to for a number of years," Mr Murphy said.
Mayor Margaret Strelow added it was great to get to the stage where the design and logo were completed.
"We have some direction and I think having a stadium will cause the region to explode - not in a scary way...we have planning for this for 10 years now and credit goes to Geoff and his team," Cr Strelow said.
While a location for the stadium had not been selected yet, the committee will consider 10 potential sites in the immediate vicinity of Rockhampton.
Mr Murphy said the stadium build depended on the success of the region getting its own NRL team. If successful in gaining a team, the State Government had stated it would build the stadium, set to cost approximately $130-140 million.
"There have been no further developments regarding the bid...there will be a final decision made at the end of 2014 about expansion."
The chairman clarified the new stadium would not affect the upgrade of Browne Park.
CQ STADIUM COMMITTEE:
The committee is comprised of nine members representing the Central Queensland region.

  • Geoff Murphy - JM Kelly Group of Companies and CQ NRL Bid and Capras chairman
  • Mayor Margaret Strelow - Rockhampton Regional Council
  • Evan Pardon - CEO Rockhampton Regional Council
  • Bruce Young MP - Member for Keppel
  • Denis Keeffe - CQ NRL Bid CEO
  • Ray Conder - CQ NRL Bid director
  • Shaun Gallagher - Principal Populous
  • Pat O'Driscoll - Rockhampton Business Community
  • Grant Cassidy - Rockhampton Business Community
