^ exactly. No one is saying CQ don't deserve a team some time in the future. They simply won't be ready for a good 10-20 years to host an NRL side, even with massive population growth when you concider some of the alternatives. Thats why I put up population figures.
Population growth across Qld has been strong in all centres, so arguing an 80k town with 10% growth is more deserving than say Sunny Coast or Logan/Ipswich with 250-300k with 10% growth is a stupid argument.
Thats like AFL claiming 100% growth in Sydney from 4 kids to 8 compared to 10 000 RL kids becoming 20 000. Same growth rate, but not the whole story. Hence using census data.
Manly when looking to play games on the sunshine coast looked long and hard at the area and decided it wasn't ready, and that was for just a few games. If the SC isn't good enough there is no way CQ is a go'er. The CQ bid team not long ago were saying they might have to split games between Rockhampton and the Sunny Coast to make the team viable because population is an issue, and that they would be happy to accept a relocated Sydney side.
Weigh that against the CC Bears and Perth Reds who have stadiums, sposorships, memberships, juniors, tv value, and huge population catchments ready to go now and it simply doesn't stack up. Good work by the CQ guys, commendable stuff, but they will have to wait, but it will be worth it in the end.
They need to look to the next expansion (along with Wellington and SE Qld bids). PNG won't be ready until 2015, so they will miss the 2013 TV deal window too.
