Why little mention of the CQ NRL bid?

Should the NRL introduce two new teams

I agree. Like the Sunshine Coast for example.

I probably wouldn't support them, but would be cool anyhow.
I know how you feel. I'd feel like I was betraying the Bronx if I followed a SC team but then again if RL fans on the SC don't follow the new team then who will? I'll probably just end up following them both equally and just ignore the games they played against each other. :)

The QLD Government should not be funding anymore stadium projects for a long time. There many more serious problems to deal with, like health.

A 2nd Brisbane team playing out of Suncorp should be the only option for another QLD team.

Momentum is building behind Central Queensland's NRL bid after state premier Anna Bligh committed to building a $140 million, 25,000-seat stadium.
The CQ bid's CEO, Denis Keeffe on Tuesday said he believed he now had a "compelling case" to present to NRL boss David Gallop after meeting with Bligh.
The Queensland Premier met with the bid's bosses on Sunday to commit to funding a stadium - expected to be in Rockhampton - similar in size to the Gold Coast Titans' Skilled Park.
Keeffe said the stadium guarantee eliminated their biggest hurdle.
He was now focused on completing the other main criteria demanded by Gallop - collecting 30,000 signatures by the year's end.
However, he was confident after the bid team already gathered about 17,000 including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as "petitioner No.1".
Mr Rudd has also promised to attend their first home game should CQ successfully enter the NRL.
"The onus is on us and the general community now to produce 30,000 bid members to back up this fantastic commitment by the very supportive state government and Regional Council," Keeffe said.
The CQ NRL bid is considered favourites along with NSW's Central Coast as the next teams to be added to the NRL as early as 2013.
While the CQ region boasts almost 20,000 supporter members, more than 6000 juniors and is the centre of mining resources, a lack of a stadium had been seen as a major stumbling block for the bid.
"The big box - the stadium - is ticked," CQ NRL chairman Geoff Murphy said.
"This stadium commitment from the Premier is massive for the CQ NRL bid."

Rocky makes more sense than the Sunshine Coast - at least it's in an area where there are no other teams within an hour drive.

However, both have the issue of being in a very spread out area, and as such will never be good options for a top-flight sporting team.

Can't agree on that.

SC has an airport that flys directly to Sydney and Melbourne several times a day whereas Rockhampton has one filght to Sydney in and out per day.

CQ would be last on my list of potential candidates, behind the CC, WA and the SC.

Works both ways - being closer may get you more away fans.

The biggest hurdle isn't the stadium (and that is a BIG hurdle). It's that it's population is no where near big enough.

CQLD is an absurd location for a team at the moment. Also it's not the favourate alongside CC... Perth is.

El Masri backs CQ NRL bid

Darryn Nufer | 10th June 2010

THE game's highest point scorer has got his boot behind the CQ NRL bid, saying the region's biggest asset is its rugby league talent pool.

Bulldogs legend Hazem El Masri has added his signature to the petition for a Central Queensland team in the national competition.

“I think it’s important to get another couple of (NRL) teams and I don’t think there’s going to be a problem with it as long as they can be very competitive,” El Masri told The Morning Bulletin at the Harvey Norman Women in League dinner in Rockhampton on Tuesday night.

“Obviously you’re fighting for the title and I know speaking to some of the locals here that there are a lot of locals who have come through and made it at the top level. That’s a positive.

“They (NRL) have to do their maths and work out what’s best for the competition.

“I think the population of Rockhampton is about 75,000 so imagine all the young kids from around here – it just gives them an extra chance, an extra incentive.

“The Gold Coast has been going extremely well, the Cowboys have always been competitive having Johno (Johnathan Thurston) so you never know, there could be another Johnathan Thurston or Greg Inglis around here.”

Also in Rockhampton for the dinner was dual international Wendell Sailor and former Cronulla flyer David Peachey.

Sailor told an audience of about 160 at Rockhampton Leagues Club that he favoured a team in Central Queensland over the likes of Papua New Guinea.

Both Sailor and Peachey added their signatures to the petition.

There are now more than 20,000 signatures and NRL boss David Gallop has indicated that at least 30,000 are needed.

before Perth Adelaide, CQ, CC, Mars, PNG, NY, London, the Saturnian moons etc

there must be another team in Brisbane/Logan/Ipswich. FFS there are closing on 2.5M people with 1 team. It's supposed to be RL central. not with one team it isn't. there are about to be as many AFL teams in SE and already as many A League teams.

consolidate your core markets before you expand. it's bloody crazy. no one as the balls to tell the broncos that some competition might actually grow the market.

There should not be a new team in the area until GC and Broncos matches are sold out every week.

Port Adelaide and Fremantle did not enter the AFL until Adelaide and West Coast were selling out their stadiums every game including approx 40k-50k members

But does that also mean that you would say that Central Coast do not enter until Newcastle and Manly sell out theirs every week?

Could you also not argue that having another team would only add to exposure and bigger crowds with more derby's?

You could However Brookvale is sh!t - besides inclement weather - it should always be very close to capacity Newcastle - should be sold out every week yes. That is one team where the ground should be FULL OF MEMBERS - RL Town, not a massive stadium etc etc. By adding more teams you are more likely to dilute support if it is in the exact same area. Thats why although I am not a massive fan of CQ - I think it has benefits over 2nd Brisbane.

why do you think shopping centres exist? think about it.

the answer. up to a point is that a number of competing businesses attract more customers than a single business on it's own. If that wasn't the case, there'd be a shop in every second street and you'd cover 2km to visit 3 shops.

i know for a fact that a number of perth people attend both Dockers and Eagles games. you don't think that would happen in Brissie. and the 2 games a yr between the Broncos and the Dog Food wouldn't draw a crowd. + derbies with GC and NQ.

If " a number of competing businesses attract more customers than a single business on it's own" is true for RL Clubs - then Why are all the Sydney Teams not playing in front of massive sell out crowds every week?

Yes of course the derbies would get decent crowds, but I dont think matches against NQ or GC are certain to be anything special...YET. The GC v NQ matches havent really been classic clashes

Don't agree.

A new team in SE QLD averaging 20-30k and helping grow TV ratings ratings north of the Tweed would be a massive benefit to the game. Any new team would be given a great run in the media up there, unilike the poor old Crushers who were treated like lepers.

Boost the number of local derbies with the ability to attract 40-52k at Suncorp.

What makes you think it would be different now?

A second Brisbane Team will hardly help increase our next TV Deal. There is an issue I think of putting too many teams in the one spot because 'it's a heartland' - we don't want Brisbane pulling crowds like the majority of Sydney-based teams.
