Why little mention of the CQ NRL bid?

Should the NRL introduce two new teams

What makes you think it would be different now?

If Adelaide and Perth can have two AFL teams then Brisbane can surely have 2 NRL teams.

The Crushers showed promising signs in their first year (av 22k) and the died in the arse - we all know why.

In 97 they are part of a Sydney-focussed split comp and the Broncos were part of a News LTD backed comp. The Courier Mail (Brisbane's rag) is News LTD-owned. Guess which team was shafted by the media? And guess which team ensured there was to be a clause in the peace deal to have no other team from SE QLD? The good old Broncos.

I challenge any new club to survive under those circumstances.

Perth and a 2nd Brisbane team are a must. Then if we must expand again, a 2nd NZ.

1000% agree

Everyone keeps going on about the battle for Western Sydney against the AFL. What about the battle against AFL in South-East QLD?

Having a 2nd Brisbane team playing out of Suncorp, and therefore virtually guaranteeing a NRL every weekend at Suncorp, would be a blow for the AFL and their mission to be the only football code on FTA television.

The AFL must be laughing their asses off about a NRL team in Central QLD.

I don't quite get the Sunshine Coast hate.

It's larger than Townsville and the same size as Wollongong.

It's close enough to get some corporate dollars out of Brisbane and certainly close enough that if they took their 3 home games against Brisbane, Gold Coast and NQL down to Suncorp that they'd be able to sell out their three Queensland derbys.

It's a rapidly growing area and could easily sustain a team. All they need is a half decent 25,000 seater.

Because the Sunshine coast, have no idea what to do with themselves atm and consequently an nrl team is not first priority. Besides they've only had a QLD cup team for a couple of years and that's only because of Manly.

And even if they get a 25,00 seater stadium, how would they get there? by car which will be very difficult for both hinterland and beachside residents or public transport, which is at best atrocious.

Central QLD, Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay need to get together. Their combined population is close to 1mil..

Why would the Sunshine Coast want to have a bid with a Rockhampton based team, when there's Brisbane 100km or so down the Bruce Highway?

Yep. they should add in another 5 or 6 Brisbane teams so it can resemble the unprofitable sh*t fight that is the NRL in Sydney.

He never mentioned "add in another 5 or 6 Brisbane teams so it can resemble the unprofitable sh*t fight that is the NRL in Sydney" or the likes. He just said Brisbane needs the monopoly to end, which I agree with, because Brisbane needs more choice and more opportunity from somewhere in Brisbane other than the broncos

The QLD Government should not be funding anymore stadium projects for a long time. There many more serious problems to deal with, like health.

A 2nd Brisbane team playing out of Suncorp should be the only option for another QLD team.

Agree, TAFE and UNi is getting really expensive and they find money for this sh*t?

Hi All,

First thread im starting. Came across this article. Don't think anyone has posted it yet.

"
Momentum is building behind Central Queensland's NRL bid after state premier Anna Bligh committed to building a $140 million, 25,000-seat stadium.
The CQ bid's CEO, Denis Keeffe on Tuesday said he believed he now had a "compelling case" to present to NRL boss David Gallop after meeting with Bligh.
The Queensland Premier met with the bid's bosses on Sunday to commit to funding a stadium - expected to be in Rockhampton - similar in size to the Gold Coast Titans' Skilled Park.
Keeffe said the stadium guarantee eliminated their biggest hurdle.
He was now focused on completing the other main criteria demanded by Gallop - collecting 30,000 signatures by the year's end.
However, he was confident after the bid team already gathered about 17,000 including Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as "petitioner No.1".
Mr Rudd has also promised to attend their first home game should CQ successfully enter the NRL.
"The onus is on us and the general community now to produce 30,000 bid members to back up this fantastic commitment by the very supportive state government and Regional Council," Keeffe said.
The CQ NRL bid is considered favourites along with NSW's Central Coast as the next teams to be added to the NRL as early as 2013.
While the CQ region boasts almost 20,000 supporter members, more than 6000 juniors and is the centre of mining resources, a lack of a stadium had been seen as a major stumbling block for the bid.
"The big box - the stadium - is ticked," CQ NRL chairman Geoff Murphy said.
"This stadium commitment from the Premier is massive for the CQ NRL bid."

Thoughs ??

Great, TAFE and all other sh*t have less money, so we can pay for this infrastructure

Uni has nothing to do with the state budget.

The government needs and wants to get people out of SE QLD and into regional areas. Having an NRL team in central QLd would help, it means jobs for starters. This is far more important then pissing ever more money on health.

If you want to alleviate the health budget then tell the good people of QLD to eat better, drink less, stop doing stupid things and tell the old f**ks to quit spending all their inheritance on holidays and pay for their own damn health if they are intent on living forever.

Good article in this weeks RLW about the CQ Bid.

Has approval for a new $149 Mil Stadium that seats about 25k.
They already have alot of corporate support, i like the $1000 corporate support offer, which gives small businesses the oportunity to get in on it also. The junior base is strong.

Population of Rockhampton is 76k, but 400k within 3 hour radius.

Not sure if im sold on it though.. I thought maybe another Brisbane team might have been better.. Local derby vs the Broncs would be pretty awesome..

Population of Rockhampton is 68k http://population-of.com/en/australia/04/Rockhampton/

There is no way there is 400k within 3 hours. It's over 3 hours to Mackay, Bundaberg and Emerald.

It's a stupid bid. Port Macquarie/Wauchope has roughly the same. We have easily 600k within 3 hours. And because of the postcode, everyone will say it's ridiculous.

Yet it's more feasible than Rocky. And I agree - the next QLD team must be Brisbane based.

They better get the libs/nationals to also agree to build the stadium because Labor won't be in power come 2013.

This is a pipe dream. Maybe in 2030 they might be a chance.

Anyone who has been to Rockhampton knows there is NOTHING there.

Agree with you 100% there Loudy.

I'd accept a bid from Nauru before CQ.

Interested in some bona fide rednecks opinions about Bribane-

OK Queenslanders - who's the biggest QRL club in Brisbane? Redcliffe? I remember they stopped the Gold Coast using their name because they wanted to use it in any future NRL bid.

So, my question is - do you back f**ks think it would be better to install an existing QRL team with a long hostory into the NRL or a new team from scratch?

If the latter, I have an idea for a name - the South Queensland Crushers. They can wear horizontal Navy Blue & Baby sh*t yellow tops, be sponsored by XXXX Gold & recruit numpties. Should work.
