The fact Thurston came so close to winning the thing this year shows that using the Dally M system by itself to judge players is inherently flawed (and that's coming from a Knights fan who should really be defending a system which Johns dominated in).

For one thing reading the Dally M counts would make you think forwards don't even exist let alone have a big influence on games. JWH and SBW ripped shit up for the Roosters this year and were a massive reason for the Roosters success, and yet were nowhere to be seen in the final count while Maloney finished near the top. I like this myth you continue to perpetuate that Johns is a 'protected species.' He couldn't have had a more public shaming for the drug controversy. He didn't receive favourable treatment from the media or anyone else during that saga. What more do you want? What is this protected species treatment you speak of? Here's a little comparison of Andy Pandy - the man in his own stratosphere and beyond comparison - and little Allan Langer, the humble Ipswich boy who doesn't get champagne flowing in Sydney town.
