Darren Lockyer earns more than Thurston. And yet they have always had a side full of representative-quality players.

A huge chunk of that $700,000 is in third-party deals and is outside the salary cap anyway, so we can still afford some other quality players.

And the Cowboys will come a helluva lot closer to a premiership than the Eels will. Four Cowboys played Origin this year (Thurston, Tonga, Scott for QLD; O'Donnell for NSW) compared to one Eel.

Every club in the competition will be after Thurston's signature when his current contract expires because he's a quality halfback and a genuine gamebreaker, both extremely rare attributes.

The Dogs think they'll get him, but they won't. The club, coach and players are totally different to 2004. The Warriors think they'll get him because he's half Kiwi and he gave his premiership ring to Steve Price. But he won't go anywhere unless he's going to be captain, least of all New Zealand, where players go to kill their careers.

700K is a LOT to pay for a player, but the reality is most clubs would (and would have to) pay more than that to lure him away from Townsville where he's captain of the team and a god to the people.

So hands off. Besides, that Mortimer kid goes alright anyway.

Just because you had four Origin players (be it two of those were only in the side as a result of injury, Scott and Tonga) doesn't mean you will be any closer to a premiership than Parra will be. It's about having a championship team, not a team of champions and until the Cowboys remove some of those slow forwards they have, they will not be a real threat and you will not see the full value of Thurston, Bowen et a because other teams will continue to expose you behind the ruck with quick play the balls and inside passes late in the halves. A team is about balance, not having the highest amount of rep players you can.

And if Thurston is going a place where he wants to be Captain, our Captain is coming off-contract next year and is unlikely to sign back on. I'm not saying that because I want Thurston at our club, but it's food for thought.

And to be honest I'd much rather Hayne with a halfback than just Thurston as an acquisition.

I would like to point out couple of things
JT is a best half we have in Australia or probably world. He steered the QLD team during this origin match. In fact he should have received Wall Lewis medal not Inglis. Locky was sheit in origin. In fact he much better halves than Hayne will be. You cannot compare hayne with JT. Do we have $700K and should we pay him 700k ,the answer to that is no. JT can never win a GF with cowboys.

http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/lhqnews/parra-set-sights-on-thurston/2009/07/23/1247942008691.html

AFTER luring former Test star Timana Tahu back from the Waratahs, Parramatta officials have set their sights on signing Australian halfback Johnathan Thurston - but could face opposition from Japanese rugby union and other NRL clubs.
And the Eels could also have a fight on their hands to retain the services of boom playmaker Daniel Mortimer, with the Bulldogs keen to snare the 20-year-old whose surname is synonymous with the club's domination in the 1980s.
Thurston, 26, who is off contract with the Cowboys at the end of next season, intends to decide his future during the summer.
His manager, Sam Ayoub, confirmed yesterday that a number of clubs, including the Eels, had expressed interest in the star playmaker.
Ayoub said the approaches were unsolicited, and he and Thurston had told the clubs, including North Queensland, that they would not consider any offers until after his commitments this season were over.
With up to $2 million worth of players coming off contract next year, the Eels are ideally placed to make a play for one of the NRL's biggest names.
New chief executive Paul Osborne has already advised Ayoub the club intends to table an offer at the appropriate time.
"Obviously, Paul Osborne is keen to get on the front foot, and that is understandable, but we don't want to do anything that could distract Johnathan or the Cowboys in the lead-up to the finals," Ayoub told the Herald.
"We want to do it like I did with Robbie Farah, and do it during the off-season, and both Johnathan and myself have told the Cowboys that. Once the season is over, there are a number of clubs who have indicated they will be interested, and we will talk to them then."
Thurston has also attracted interest from the Bulldogs and the Warriors, while there was speculation last night that a Japanese rugby club was prepared to offer him up to $1 million a season.
In a twist, the Bulldogs are also keen to snare Parramatta's Mortimer, whose father, Peter, and uncles Steve and Chris created a dynasty at the club in the 1980s.
After making his NRL debut this season, Mortimer signed a one-year extension with the Eels but admitted he would be tempted by an opportunity to play for the Bulldogs.
"It would be great to see a Mortimer back running around with the Dogs," he told AAP. "Just growing up, I always idolised players from the Bulldogs, and I used to just dream of pulling on that blue and white jersey.

"It'd be great to be back there, but I'll take it as it comes.
"Growing up, I never thought I'd be playing against the Doggies - I thought if I did end up making a career, it would be with the Doggies. It's a weird place to be in but I've been at Parramatta for two years now, and I've grown to love the club."
Osborne said the Eels were keen to hold on to their new halfback. Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said Mortimer was definitely a player of interest for his club.
Meanwhile, the Eels are waiting for the Australian Rugby Union to formally release Tahu before confirming his signing.
Tahu is yet to meet with the director of the ARU's high-performance unit, David Nucifora, to seek a release from the remaining two years remaining of his contract.
It is understood there will be no opposition to the 28-year-year-old dual international taking up a three-year deal with the Eels.
Meanwhile, South Sydney and NSW utility Craig Wing denied he was joining second division Japanese Rugby franchise NTT Communications on a two-year, $1.5 million deal because he was in financial strife.
"I'd really like to clarify that, and that's totally false," Wing told Sky Sports Radio. "Yes, I have made a couple of investments over the last couple of years that are taking a while to come to fruition due to the current economic situation.
"I'm in a great position. I've been playing rugby league for 11 years, been earning really good money, and financially I'm in a position that's a lot better than pretty much anyone I know that's my age. This is just more about a new challenge, new goals, getting away and a new lifestyle."

Frustrating being a supporter of an NRL club in this day and age. I'd love to be excited about the prospect of Thurston possibly coming to the club, but would be upsetting to lose Daniel Mortimer. Makes it hard to enjoy the present really.

It sucks doesnt it - I couldnt contain myself once i found out we had signed Tahu, but then you think of the interest that Jarry hayne is going to generate around the world and how hard it will be to resign him!

yeah I've been on cloud 9 since the Tahu news came through yesterday. Thinking back to how disappointing it was to lose him a few seasons ago and its brilliant to think that he will hopefully be back in the blue and gold.

I've got faith that Hayne will be resigned. His form this season has made him an absolute marquee player that no club in their right mind would release easily. And I feel like we're hearing the right things from the Osborne and Anderson to suggest that they're on the same page.

THE Eels are poised to launch an audacious bid to lasso Johnathan Thurston away from the Cowboys.

The Eels have targeted the man regarded as the game's best player when he comes off contract at the end of next year.
New Parramatta CEO Paul Osborne met several player managers this week and Thurston was the hot topic of conversation.
Osbourne has told those that matter he won't be beaten on price, with the Eels expected to have a war chest at their disposal in 2011 with several high-paid players off contract.
We understand the Eels would have to fork out more than $700,000 to entice Thurston to return to Sydney.
Osborne and Daniel Anderson feel the Eels could build a team around the freakishly talented Australian No.7.
They will lose promising playmaker Albert Kelly to the Sharks next year and will no doubt say goodbye to a couple of underperforming stars to make room for Thurston.
The Bulldogs also have their eye on Thurston as a replacement for Brett Kimmorley but have been deterred by his asking price.

And on the contrary, the whole team will be linked to a rumour of them being unwanted by the club and looking to be released for a bigger signing

ok who would u rather have:

Thurston - will take up a big chunk of the cap...so in turn will have to shed a few players possibly a mateo or even Inu at that stage (just saying)

or

Morts - just starting his career and has good potential and isnt taking up much cap at all.......

i know id rather morts thats for sure BUT if we were to sign thurston i really hope we keep players like inu mateo hayne, but id say Hindy might leave to free up some money????? coz i cant see any other players leaving that would be able to free up enuff to cater for Thurston other than

Hayne
Inu
Mateo
Hindy
Tahu
Poore

so i rekon u would say goodbye to at least 2 of those players

There is another big twist in all of this....... A game of poker ensues, all cards kept close to the chest but all in the game dream for the Eels..... Will they drop their asking price????? ... drop drop drop drop drop.......... I guess so. PO is a good poker player, lets see who comes on board down the line.... If he does and I feel he will, he could turn out to be one of Parra's greatest purchases since Ray Price, Mick Cronin & Peter Sterling!!!!!! Who is he??????

Sorry people but heard from our CEO on 2SM that Thurston is NOT coming to eels due to salary cap. He also said that Cayless will stay.

He reckons Thurston will goto Bulldogs after Noddy finishes up.
