Cullen Mangan 2010. 38% malbec, 32% petit verdot, 30% merlot. Stunning and elegant

Ok, so, over Christmas I was digging around the old office downstairs at work. The place used to be a car yard so there are all sorts of hiding places and as previously mentioned we've found some treasures down there before. This time I found a random box of a dozen Penfolds premiums...a couple of Grange, some aged 389 and some other stuff. It was all on file and sellable bar one bottle, a Bin 820 cabernet shiraz. Given there was no way for me to sell it, it has found its way to my table and me and my best mate will crack it tonight to celebrate his return from six months overseas. I'm almost certain it will be f**ked, its thirty years old after all and even Penfolds (who often grossly overrate the life of their wines IMO) only gave it about 25 years...but it seems nice and red and the cork is seemingly in fantastic shape, there is zero ullage, so I have hope.

I half think they are being left there by a murderous homeless man who wants to match them to my sauteed liver...there are some creepy spots downstairs.

You'll hate me even more for this...the wine was fine, nay, magnificent. I was pretty certain it would be bollocksed, having no odea how or where it was stored all those years and given it was beyond recommended age and had thrown more sediment than I have seen in any wine I've ever had. But I was wrong. It was bricking very badly, colour wise, bit thats to be expected at that age. It still had a proper ruby red core, however. Nose was black fruit but the real surprise was the palate. It still had plenty of weight and body, tonnes of blackcurrant from the cabernet, but what surprised me was the oak presence. Even after thirty years, the core of the wine was all chocolate oak, and that grew as it breathed in the decanter. A brilliant, brilliant wine.

We finished off with a Brown Brothers Patricia Noble Riesling, which is also an awesome drop (IMO better than Noble One)

Baz, advice please. I've had my brother, parents, and Poms invade my place for the last month. It all comes to an end after work Saturday night. I need a bloody good red up to $50 to relax and unwind with (currently have a bottle of Esprit Shiraz Grenache Mataro as well). Ideas?

after that you'll need more than 1 bottle of red, can I suggest a good cognac or even a port to follow

The Esprit is a beauty IMO, delicious wine. Depends what you're looking for tbh. (And not sure what you have access to!)

Big shiraz?? Langmeil Orphan Bank or John Duval Entity.
Cooler shiraz? Shaw and Smith.
Cabernet?? Wynns Davis Vineyard (I recall you're a Coonwarra man)
Blend?? John Duval Plexus (GSM) or Moss Wood Amys 09 (Bourdeaux Blend)
Pinot? Stefano Lubiana

It's a cracker mate, exceptional value too. I rate it much closer to the top end cab than the $35-$50 price suggests
