I'm practically the same mate. I have over 300 bottles hanging around, and literally two dozen would be white. I'm mostly a red drinker too, I can drink a big shiraz even in the heat. But occasionally I just feel like a white. Personally as a red man, I like whites with either texture (viognier, pinot gris, chardonnay) or structure (riesling, semillon). Steer clear of New Zealand sav blanc and you should be right!

Cheers mate,

Look forward to trying those you mentioned. As for the sav blanc it won?t happen as my beautiful bride refers to it as cat?s piss. She has tried 4 or 5 and just doesn?t like it, not a fan at all. That?s the thing I love about wine, you can get 10 people to try 10 different wines and their opinions will generally differ.

I started the night with a 2010 Wynns cab....roast beef, I just had to!

But, the surprise of the night is the second bottle. Wifey was in Dan Murphy's buying moscato (I'm ashamed just typing that) for the family dinner this evening, and picked me up a St Hallett Western Front shiraz knowing I'm a huge fan of the winery. I was sceptical, personally. In my experience both of us majors usually get our Aussie exclusives very wrong. But this is a bit of a ball tearer in all honesty. Its about $13 bucks, and the oak and fruit for that price are mind bending...all chocolate and blackberry and licorice. I wish my buyers had got on it, it's going to be a huge seller...

Talking to myself in here...surely old mate SGL has been on the juice now he has a job :p

2010 Heartland Directors Cut shiraz tonight. Generally, Langhorne Creek shiraz does very little for me. But this one...wow. Big, juicy, almost chewy fruit, five spice, licorice, olive, chocolate from the oak. Awesome stuff

Into the French red tonight, started with a chilled type rose, now onto a pinot type red. Not sure of the exact variety, I cannot read French.

If it's a light red thats not a pinot/Burgundy, I'm guessing it's a Beaujolais? Gamay grape, very nice when done well

It might be, not 100% sure. Was recommended to me by a former wine maker. Only $13 odd per bottle at Dan Murphys, very nice for the price. I know another bottle I often get is a Beaujolais, not sure on this one though.

Serafino 2010 McLaren Vale shiraz....After what Fosters/Treasury did to Maglieri and their wines (has anyone had the current vintage Maglieri shiraz? Don't), I think it's clear Steve and family have had the last laugh. This is just awesome, loads of that McLaren Vale black fruit and crushed ant, plums, an almost Gigondas-like earthy minerality. A real winner

I dunno, that's the term I learned for it when my boss was teaching me to sort of verbalise what I was getting from the wine, it just stuck...that kinda formic acid smell they seem to get.

I'm back baby!

Picked up a red from work, Marques D Elciego Rioja Seleccion 2009. If you can't tell, its a Spanish red. And what a red! This thing could do damage, very VERY easy to drink!

Weather is pretty warm, so a good excuse for Riesling. Having a bottle of 09 S.K. Old Vine Barossa Riesling. Sells itself as being hand pruned, hand picked, hand made. Reasonably traditional riesling, lots of green apple flavours being typical for Barossa, with a good heap of lemon peel to back it up. Dry style, good quaffer.

1 hour(ish) later. Wine has warmed up nicely. Dried apricot coming through now. Extremely long finish, very clean. Slight metallic nose, lemon peel more like a bitter lemon marmalade now. Dry as the Simpson Desert.

2008 Kooyong Estate Pinot...a bit closed at the moment, interesting to see how it goes over a couple of hours

So, after an hour, the power that I usually associate with Kooyong pinots is coming through...loads of cherry, not plum, which is to be expected from a quality wine maker. Leather, herbs, but very soft and mouth filling with some of its vibrancy left. Probably drinking perfectly now, for my palate anyway

2010 St Hallett Blackwell shiraz...probably doing it no justice by drinking it this young but it's still awesome. Loads of black fruit instead of red, a metric tonne of oak but brilliantly handled, peppery tannins and miles of length. It's not heavy though, which I like, there's a lightness and elegance to it. Awesome wine

Two Hands are awesome wine makers...the Gnarly Dudes is a cracker. I'm a huge fan of the Lily's Garden too, although it's a good bit pricier

At Bday dinner tonight, picked a bottle of Shark Bay Pinot off the list...$35 pinot restaurant price, I wasn't expecting a lot but I was very pleasantly surprised. Loads of cherry, good depth, good value, we went through 3 bottles
